I can understand if something's really graphic wanting a warning. I watched a movie in a film class (Man Bites Dog) and there were some fairly brutal scenes. But the professor gave us a brief warning. But some of the examples were kind of ridiculous.

I actually took a class once (Violence in American Film) where the class description had a warning that you should not take it unless you were prepared to see graphic violence. I took it, and, well, I wasn't prepared. (I wound up just looking up Wikipedia summaries.)

You took a class on violence in film when you can't handle violence in film? You didn't drop?

Wow. You must be a pleasure to teach. Please don't stick around when you're unhappy. It's better for you.

What was the point of this comment?

Maybe she needed it for her major or something?

You don't need to spam your obnoxious sarcasm everywhere.

See, this is an example of you being an ass in a completely non-constructive way.

Agreed. Makes people not want to defend her against hate-anons.

Yeah, I'm not going to let someone be sanctimonious about staying in a class after being warned to the point where they are more or less cheating. It's not b constructive blue cause it's not an asspat apparently.

*raises eyebrows* you call using Wikipedia cheating? And do you actually think that the majority of students don't use Wikipedia?

Who is being sanctimonious here?

Also, in all honesty, it doesn't come across well when you treat people like that - being scathing and mocking (that goes WAY beyond just disagreeing) when you don't like what someone said about something that has nothing to do with you, and acting like you're taking it really personally.

Pretty sure she's just bitter about what happened that fat girls are hot non-fandom confession and wanted to get back or whatever for feotakahari's comment yesterday.

wait, what?

I checked back on that thread, and all I saw were a few "ia" comments and a picture of a literal chick (baby chicken). Was there wank??

I think using Wikipedia instead of watching the film in a film class is cheating, yes. They weren't looking up quick facts, they were literally not doing the work. And that is lame. I won't pretend it isnt.

And no,acting as if it is lame isn't taking it pwrsonally.

considering that I know you're a teacher and you commented "Wow. You must be a pleasure to teach." it does seem you took it a little personally, if not for yourself, then on behalf of Teachers Everywhere, even though I'm quite sure teachers aren't a monolith.

If you're just talking about using Wikipedia instead of watching a movie, I'd say it depends, but I don't have a formal opinion on that specific set of scenarios. So I won't disagree, just...I dunno. I've used Wikipedia for class before but under different circumstances.

As for the rest, you can take it how you like - just a little feedback. I know a lot of people don't like you, and I actually do like you, but sometimes you are really rude.

DP covered my own objections to this comment quite well, but I will add:

"I'm not going to let..."

It's not really up to you or anyone else to let or stop anyone from feeling a certain way about their experiences. OP had misjudged their tolerances and took appropriate steps, you venturing your... lets say judgments on them for this isn't helpful and really only serves to make someone feel bad. As I said above unnecessarily harsh.

Again, if you want to be unnecessarily harsh, go for it, but if you'll take some honestly well-meaning advice from me, that approach is not going to make the places and people around you any happier.

/soapbox

idk, I was unhappy in most classes like everyone else and was ok. Education is not fun.

How does that determine whether she's a pleasure to teach or not? She realized that she wasn't ready to deal with the material but she found a way to complete the class anyway. It's not like she cried and threw temper tantrums in the middle of class about how the material was triggering or anything like that.

You're such a despicable, miserable person.

... what does that even mean? Doll?

Re: So trigger warnings finally made the New York Times

[personal profile] the_missing_y 2014-05-19 08:57 am (UTC)(link)
Chard is using the "Show us on the doll where the person touched you" cliché(Courtroom thing for children who have underwent abuse).

The "Where you got a C" is to imply that the person has bitterness about receiving an average grade from a teacher.

I believe I am reading it correctly.

You are. I said that in a moment of anger about other rather big RL things going on. Normally I back away from the keyboard when that happens but I didn't this time.

I retain my accusation that the anon I was responding to is in fact probably a shitty student, but deeply apologize for the tasteless joke. I should have said that differently.

Oh, that is not the classiest comment you've ever made. I'm trying to see things as kindly as I can for you, I really am, but this comment right here... I think I'm out.

This was a little on the harsh side. Kinda unnecessary. Your business ofcourse, but did you really need to post like this?

Re: So trigger warnings finally made the New York Times

(Anonymous) 2014-05-19 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Geez, Chard. I figured they meant that they thought they were prepared and then realized they weren't?

But I don't see how looking up written descriptions of a film in question would be cheating. I mean, if someone is visually impaired, they'd likely need to look up textual descriptions to be read, but that wouldn't stop them at all from understanding the potential impacts of violence in films, or the history behind it, etc.
