So trigger warnings finally made the New York Times

[personal profile] feotakahari 2014-05-18 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
It's probably the most passive-aggressive article I've seen in the NYT, and that's saying something given how much value they place on pretending to be balanced even when they oppose something. http://www.nytimes.com/2014/05/18/us/warning-the-literary-canon-could-make-students-squirm.html To be fair, a lot of the cases mentioned sound pretty ridiculous, but I sympathize with the rape survivor who wanted her teacher to give a warning before showing the class a graphic rape scene.

My God this generation are such fucking babies. How do they go out in public without falling to the ground to cry about how oppressed they are by the world.

People like this are not a "this generation" thing. They always existed, and when they went out in public they would do what you consider "falling to the ground to cry about how oppressed they are," and they kept living that way their whole lives being ignored, if they weren't locked up.

Hopefully if we ignore them enough they will go away.

This is the part where tumblr learns that internet=/= rest of the world. You're in fucking college. If something in a book upsets you, put the book down, and look it up on the internet so you can pass the class, like everyone else.

Also: LOLING FOREVER at the idea that a statue of a guy in his underwear is triggering. That is funny as shit.

Okay, what the fuck.

I get that trigger warnings can be helpful, but seriously? You're in fucking college. If you are triggered by something, then it should be your responsibility to go through the syllabus, and look into the things you're reading/watching to see if it has one of your triggers.

I can understand if something's really graphic wanting a warning. I watched a movie in a film class (Man Bites Dog) and there were some fairly brutal scenes. But the professor gave us a brief warning. But some of the examples were kind of ridiculous.

I actually took a class once (Violence in American Film) where the class description had a warning that you should not take it unless you were prepared to see graphic violence. I took it, and, well, I wasn't prepared. (I wound up just looking up Wikipedia summaries.)

I get people whining about trigger warnings but showing a graphic rape scene in a class merits a warning.

Re: So trigger warnings finally made the New York Times

(Anonymous) 2014-05-18 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I doubt that the professor just sprung it on people. He/she probably did give a warning but didn't give a specific warning. More like, "Okay, this is going to be graphic. You have been warned" rather than, "This scene is of a graphic rape. You have been warned."

I think some of the people in the article are missing the point. In my experience, trigger warnings are like the terms and conditions or privacy policies. Some people read through them carefully, and a lot of people ignore them and click straight through until they get to the app or set up a user profile. The point is not to put bubble wrap around everyone's feelings but to allow someone who's looking for a warning to find it. Even on Tumblr, you have to specifically block certain words in order to use TW tags effectively.

The idea that free speech should be impeded so that an entire college campus is a "safe space" is counterproductive. Someone who has ptsd or something similar needs to be able to operate in the real world to some extent. Use safe spaces if you need them, but stretching the safety bubble too much is only going to make it more painful when something does cause a bad reaction.

IA, mostly...but the people who said a statue of a guy in his underwear triggered sexual assault victims. Like, seriously. How do you people watch TV?

Re: So trigger warnings finally made the New York Times

(Anonymous) 2014-05-18 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Not to mention a college campus is not, and probably never has been, a "safe space" for anybody.

All I see is this is a slippery slope to censorship. It will go from trigger warnings to out and out eliminating anything that is triggery. Unfortunately, there seems to be a rule these days that if it exists, someone will be offended/triggered by it.

Trigger warnings, they say, suggest a certain fragility of mind that higher learning is meant to challenge, not embrace.

jeez.

But it's "they say," you see! We're not actually saying people who ask for trigger warnings are big stupid babies, we're just quoting people who think that way! That means we're balanced!

Yeah, sometimes I actually prefer Gawker's zero-fucks attitude to NYT's pretense of neutrality.

A similar story moved on the AP wires last week or so. I kept meaning to post about it but never did, and was starting to wonder if it would show up or gain traction.

I'm really on the fence. In same cases, I get it. In others, I share the "bunch of whining babies" sentiment.

This draft mandate though...

“Be aware of racism, classism, sexism, heterosexism, cissexism, ableism, and other issues of privilege and oppression..."

That's a lot of things. And while unpleasant, they are not inherently traumatic. For some of us, these experiences are sadly quite prosaic. Insisting that they be warned for dilutes the meaning of "trigger warnings".

yeah... "contains people being verbally insensitive" describes most books with interesting content. I have to wonder how saying a book contains "ableism" would be helpful to anyone with specific trauma.

Without a very clear policy and guide as to what students can expect, this would be a train wreck. And students who aren't satisfied have to talk to the accessibility office, not their profs. But it's doable, universities are full of weirder shit. They're just being dramatic because the liberal arts education is under pressure to change from all sides these days.

I love you so much right now. You just expressed in one sentence, in a way that is very difficult to misinterpret, something that I could devote three long paragraphs to trying to explain and still not successfully get across.
