What was your favorite or LEAST favorite series ending? (Or story/play/movie ending, if it wasn't a series.)
rubbertea: hugh skinner making a ridiculous face while wearing a ridiculous hat (hugh does that hat even exist)

i think dexter wins the most hilariously terrible ending award.

as for my favorite, i'm gonna be real original and say breaking bad.

I wasn't in love with the Buffy ending. I actually didn't mind the potentials all becoming slayers. But somehow the entire town of Sunnydale being destroyed felt... well, the first time it felt counterproductive, the second time I realized it partially recycled the season three finale (not entirely obviously, but blowing up the school and everything), and my brain started wondering why they didn't just end the show there and use Sarah Michelle Gellar in the Angel spinoff. (And I didn't even mind the post-season three seasons as much as most of fandom.)

Pirates of the Caribbean, although I honestly didn't like any of the movies after the first that much anyway. Why didn't they just stick with one movie?

I really, really hated the ending of BSG. Enough so that I am still bitter about it all these years later.

For my favorite? I think A:TLA had pretty much the perfect ending. It fit the series and it was amazing and ugh, it was SO GOOD.

Least favorite is probably the Harry Potter epilogue, probably? I haven't watched the end of HIMYM yet, but I've been spoiled and I suspect it'll be competing for that top spot when I do see it.

Least favorite: The last book in the Earth's Children series, where nothing happens anyway until Ayla Femme Sue inadvertently invents sexism.

How I Met Your Mother...

Least:
How I Met You're Mother. I will not go off on another rant, but suffice it to say it was bad. Really bad.

House. But then again, the entire last few seasons were bad.

Favorite:
Buffy. I liked the ending. A lot of season 7 wasn't great but I did love the final.

Return of the King- movie version. The book dragged on too long, but I think the movie found a happy medium.

Return of the Jedi: Special edition: I love the celebration on various planets. And I loved the redemption of Anakin. ROTJ is my favorite Star Wars movie.

Star Trek: Voyager: Say what you will about Voyager, but I think they had both the best beginning and the best end episodes of any of the Trek series. It struck just the right tone and gave the audience the exact right ending.

Babylon 5: A perfect, bittersweet ending to the show. No spoilers for the people who are currently watching. But I loved the ending.

The 'March to the Sea' series by Ringo & Weber was one of my favorite scifi/military/idk book series, and I was impressed at the ending. The whole thing was this epic journey across an alien planet, with great details of worldbuilding and giant-ass battles everywhere, and all the while the 'spoiled-brat' princeling developing into a giant badass warrior king type, so when they actually succeeded in getting off the planet I was like "Can they keep it up from here?" but they totally did. The ending made me go "Wow I'm kinda mad about that but it also totally works...."

maybe it was bound to happen because it was based on a UK show, but the ending to the US Life on Mars was so horrible. now i look back and I can laugh about it, but at the time i couldn't believe that they made the ending how they did. in the other direction, i loved the ending for ashes to ashes a lot

My favorite ending is from Little, Big. I can't even imagine a better ending or what that would even look like. It's a perfect summation of the book, it's beautiful, and it's clever. Also I liked the Sandman ending and Buckaroo Banzai

For least favorite... it's hard to think of anything that qualifies, because if it's something that I have my doubts about, I'm more likely to drop it than anything. I didn't care for the Return of the King movie ending, I guess - it took too long without carrying the weight that the book version had - but I'm not wild about the LotR movies in general. And I don't think the HP epilogue was very good but it's hard for me to get heated up about it.

Blackadder had a great finale, although it wasn't a particularly happy ending.

Most of the time I don't mind crappy endings (except Dexter and Roseanne), since they are still endings. I hate it when shows are canceled and they leave everything hanging in the air.

Re: Inspired by #4...

Least favorite? I would say Indiana Jones, except I think they're actually trying to make another one. Indiana Jones was my childhood, I love those movies, stop trying to screw them up. Let it rest.

Mass Effect. I'm not even going into all my feelings about that, because we could be here all day. All in all I'm not as upset about it as I was, but...I just found the entire thing to be disappointing and anti-climatic. I expected too much. (Hype is evil.)

As for good endings, I know a lot of fans weren't enthused by it, but I adored Uncharted 3's ending. I thought it wrapped things up nicely, and even though that series is one of my favorites, I would've been okay leaving things there. I almost don't want Naughty Dog to continue on with the series because I really, really liked where it left off and don't think they need to keep 'tempting fate'. At some point I feel like a screw up is inevitable.

...I honestly can't think of many tv shows I like that have ended with great endings. (And so many of the ones I like are still on-going.) Er...I was one of the few to actually like House's ending? Not necessarily all of the last (few) season(s) or anything, but the very end, I thought it was fitting. Depressing, but it wasn't going to end any other way.

Least favorites:

The Scott Pilgrim movie. I MUCH preferred the alternate ending that was on the DVD, where Scott goes off with Knives.

The Voyager ending, mostly because Seven/Chatokay just ... I admit that perhaps I didn't watch enough of the series to know if it actually made sense, but for me it just seemed to come out of nowhere. (And granted, they were of of my favorite characters, but still.)

I seem to like the endings everyone else hates. I LOVED BSG's ending, and LOST's (and Dark Tower's, for the one other fan of that series who lurks here). And a lot of the shows I think "well that ended terribly" I'd checked out a few seasons before the actual end. X Files, Buffy, VOY...

Favorite: probably DS9, but I have a lot of love for the endings of His Dark Materials and Sandman. These are all for silly emotional reasons.

Least favorite: although I ADORED the book, the ending to Umberto Eco's "The Island of the Day Before" felt like someone tore out the last chapter and returned the book to the library in truncated form. It bothers me when things are left unfinished at pivotal moments.

Least favorite, with a fandom: Harry Potter, honestly. I thought the epilogue added nothing that couldn't have been handled in the narrative (ex: the one line of Harry's about choices, or about the bravest man he knew, or Neville's future career). And it was TERRIBLY written. I honestly think JKR took the ending out of her safe or wherever and published it as-is, with no rewrites. I'm willing to overlook how WTF I think the endgame pairings are, because the books have established a dating-and-marriage pattern that's at least internally consistent. But I'd hoped that we'd get more from that ending than pure fluff.

There's very few endings I like, it's probably the thing I'm most critical about with any piece of media. Mostly the best judgment they can get from me is "not as disappointing as it could have been". But Cowboy Bebop's ending was flawless.

I have three: Dexter, Community, and How I Met Your Mother. I hate Dexter's the most and How I Met Your Mother's the second. With Community, I'm mainly disappointed because it was BORING.

I'm sad Community was canceled, but it honestly should've been canceled after season 3. THAT would've made a perfect series finale.

If Parks and Rec ended this season, this season's finale would've also made a perfect series finale.

Do works with multiple endings count? I think Deus Ex: Human Revolution gives you a very good selection of endings to choose from based on your own values. I also love the ending you get in Alpha Protocol if you spare and befriend almost everyone, pretend to join the villain, and then tell him you don't need him.

Least favorite is definitely the manga version of Karin. I read a translation that cut off right before the ending, so I looked it up on Wikipedia and just went "WTF?" Without getting into spoilers, the whole manga seems to have one message, and the ending is built around the idea that said message is impossible and unrealistic.

It may be a bit obscure to most folk here but... The Ascension "Good" epilogue for Sarevok in Baldur's Gate: Throne of Bhaal. I think it may have been the stock epilogue for him that was in the expansion, while Ascension (a mod that adjusted a number of gameplay details of ToB) added a grimmer ending as the bad epilogue for him.

But then I was a bit of a fangirl for Evil Big Brother turned good.
