Words that bug you

(Anonymous) 2014-05-23 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
The last few days have shown me that I have an irrational hatred of "shall." With few exceptions, unless it's preceded by "you" and followed by "not pass," it just sounds pretentious (and wrong, though it's probably not).

Things that rhyme with -ump. I just really hate how -ump sounds. Blech.

Waits for everyone to reply with words that rhyme with -ump

"homosexual" -- I hear it so often in anti-gay rhetoric and I immediately identify it as a dehumanizing tactic, so I tend to have an automatic cringe whenever anyone uses it, regardless of intent.

Drives me fucking bugshit. Especially if "straight" is used for the opposite concept as opposed to "heterosexual." (Which is another word that's gradually slipping into "please stop saying that" territory.)

DECIMATE

[personal profile] silverr 2014-05-23 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
... because every time I hear it I think of the original meaning -- to kill 10% of the captives -- and it just sounds wrong.

It's most often used to mean, "and then 90% to 100% of [subject] was destroyed." Annihilate and obliterate are perfectly serviceable words, USE THEM.

I've pretty much stopped using "girl" and "boy" as a word when I'm trying to describe adult men and women, because to me it is so closely associated with youth, it's almost demeaning when you use it to refer to someone who's a rational adult

"Disenfranchise."

The franchise is the right to vote. To "disfranchise" someone is to strip him/her of his/her right to vote. "Disenfranchise" is an incorrect construction. And, even worse, it's used to describe things that have nothing to do with voting.

I get that the meanings and implications have changed, but it still drives me bonkers.

I love self-portraits and I think the hate people get for taking / posting a ton of pictures of themselves is way overblown. But I have a supernova-sized irrational hate for the word "selfie. I'm not even sure why.

"Cropped" sounds super stupid. Especially "close-cropped" and "riding crop".

And because of tumblr I'm starting to have a reaction to every time I see "play" tacked onto something to magically make it a kink. The other day I saw "presentation play" and I could not get it out of my head for a weekend.

Also, the verb "to wee" (????? the hell is this, kindergarten?).

And ALL the idioms that use defecation/urination imagery because I end up literally imagining it all and it makes my life weird.

People need to fucking stop saying the word "literally" when they do not actually mean "literally." It has a specific meaning and 95% of the time people don't even know what that meaning is. I can't wait until it goes out of style again, which luckily seems to be happening already but can't happen fast enough.

Iranian. I wish I knew why that particular word bothers me so much, but it does (especially since the country's language has at least three different terms used to denote it, which gets confusing at times).

Implement vs use. That one got stuck in my head from a professor's advice for writing papers.

Also, egregious (because I spend too much time on TV Tropes and it is majorly overused).
