What type of character do you always like?

[personal profile] seventh_seal 2014-05-24 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
So, what's your fandom "type"? You know, the archetype of character you always fall for? If you have a type.

As an example for myself, I remember watching the Star Trek 2009 movie and in the scene where young Spock rejects the Vulcan Science Academy, I just thought, yep, here we go again.

I have no type at all. My collection of favorite character and character who hold a special place in my heart come in a huge variety of different types and attained their status all for wildly different reasons.

However, I've noticed I tend to find anyone with a strong New York or other east-coast accent to be disproportionately endearing.

I go for sneaks and survivors, and especially sneaky survivors. Every time. People who can trick/talk their way out rather than fight their way out. I imprinted hard on Faceman from the A-Team at a young age, and haven't really looked back since.

I fall for relationship dynamics, tbh. My "type" is a reserved, outwardly cold older character being friends with an emotional younger character. Bonus points if they work together. Bonus points if they both have gigantic issues and cling onto each other like there's no tomorrow.

Woobies. I always end up loving them too much and wanting to hug them and tell them that everything will be fine.

Slackers with a sense of humor
Wide-eyed idealists
Take charge women
Reserved quiet types
Manic dream pixie girls without a guy
Lovable morons

I tend to have a soft spot for the deadpan snarker archetype.

male characters: quiet intelligent type who secretly has a lot of courage
female characters: ruthless gruff type with a sense of humor

The snarky little shit
The hero character that fails miserably at his/her goals of being heroic

Short, cute, nerdy, with glasses. Fury and Scieszka from FMA are the first examples that spring to mind, but there are many more.

Nice, tough, funny, and horribly traumatized in some way? Instant favorite character!

Morally ambiguous disabled characters with strong senses of loyalty.

Snarky, cynical female characters with a permanently bored expression and anger issues, the more indie/punk the better.

Bonus points for androgyny.

Daddy issues
Having to hide a life-altering secret from friends
Morally ambiguous but very (overly) loyal to friends

Dorks and woobies.
Also characters that care too much and may tend to hide their own problems. On the flip side I also often like ditzballs and overly cheerfull characters, but only if they are presented as complex enough.

I always like the outcasts who don't fit in. That's pretty much my life.

Travellers and those with wanderlust. Something about characters who are always on the road and never remain in one place long deeply interests me, along with the inevitable implications of 'people left behind'.

I love the trickster types. The ones you have no idea whose side they are on except for themselves. But they are always smarter than everyone else and have the best dialog. Characters like Loki, Ben Linus, Gabriel (Supernatural), Garak and Floki (Vikings).

I always like male characters who are physically strong and the type you'd think would have big egos but then are really nice and fun and totally not the stereotype in personality.

Basically, attractive men who like fun. I dont' fall for the depressed/angsty characters. If I fall for a villain it's the villain who revels in what he does and doesn't angst about it. If it is the hero, it's not the angsty one.

Typically the villain will be my favourite, it's not the case with every piece of media I consume but it's more common than not. For heroic characters I'm not sure, I usually like snarky ones but I also have some truly heroic characters that are just good people through and through that I adore.

female: hbic, independent and will not take your shit, bel rowley basically

:')))))

I pretty much always love characters who are good, moral, upstanding people, who want to be that way and who actively try to be responsible and decent as much as possible, while still being realists. Who care about shit, basically. Also characters who have major self-esteem issues, and a general gruff manner doesn't hurt although it's not entirely necessary.

Also, I enjoy characters who are grizzled old men pretty much 100% of the time, and precocious moppet-like kids a slightly lower but still extremely high percentage

I have a few of them, including "tiny little girl who will CUT you", "total dick with a heart of gold", "older scruffy mentor dude who may have a beard and/or drink too much", and "fail-dad".

(Dude in my icon hit two of those in the same scene halfway through the first episode and I was like "...................")
