Every now and then I wish that MCU!Bucky hadn't been such a lovely character. Because then I'd only have to worry about ONE set of Bucky feels.

Instead we got Sebastian Stan being a Bucky that's amazing and pretty and sweet and great, and I found myself going to see tWS in theaters more times than I can count on one hand, and…he's breaking my heart on the screen and on paper.

And about then I realize I was stupid to ever not want to like a beloved character, anyway, and just hold on for the ride, no matter how brutally it breaks my heart.

D'awww, but you can love Bucky twice as much now! And you know that Bucky is such a wonderful character that he deserves every bit of that love! Love Bucky, anon. Embrace your Bucky feelings. (Steve Rogers certainly has, and you know Steve is a good judge of character!)

Marvel is devious as hell and casting Sebastian as Bucky was a stroke of brilliance. His eyes say everything he can't, and it is terrible.

Way to make this sound like a cult, anon. Are we a cult? I feel like we're starting to border on a cult. I don't want to worship Sebastian Stan, I swear. ... Well, maybe just a little. But not in any serious way! ...But Bucky deserves a little worship, he's been through so much...someone should appreciate him. Damn you Sebastian Stan!

It was meant to. Directly lifted from Dune. :D We might be a cult. With sects, no less. I mean, there's the whole group on Tumblr who just calls him a Sad Trash Hobo as a term of endearment. I, on the other hand, just tend to stare helplessly at him and wonder how he can be so adorable in real life and so heartbreaking on the screen and just overall…wonder.

Poor Bucky, he can't get away from the nicknames. And this must've been Marvel's plan. They want to pull people in SO deep that they'll never want to stop watching Marvel films. Or reading Marvel comics. Or buying Marvel merchandise. They want people to live the MCU, to think of nothing else. It is working well for them. Sebastian was a key piece of their plan, and it has been a big success.

Too late. :P Though now I'm sad that those fandoms - especially political animals - aren't bigger. So much potential, not enough people in the fandom. :(

IA, neither fandoms are big enough. I wanted fic but there's so little to be found! Even less of if is actually really good, which is disappointing though not entirely unexpected. Neither show got much love or publicity. (And Political Animals was superb. Kings was entertaining too, and the universe it's set in was so cool and gives fandom a lot to work with. Too bad.)

It seems to be going that way even if didn't want it to. :p

Marvel, despite what they've said, will never convince me that the Winter Soldier WASN'T in their plans. Because, hell, while Stan is more than good as a playboy, his strength is very much in the land of tortured silence.

Did Marvel actually say they weren't sure they were doing Winter Soldier? There's no way I believe that either. Even if they didn't have concrete plans, they must've known bringing him back was a strong possibility. What would they even do without Bucky?

Like...idk, maybe because I haven't read ALL the comics, but Bucky is so closely tied to Steve, and I just can't imagine what else they could have done that would've had this big of an emotional impact. Steve and Bucky's epic ~~romance~~ friendship was just what they needed to ensnare their audience. Bucky is the perfect (not-really-an-antagonist-)antagonist.

It was strong implied by several people that tWS wasn't any plan at all. What they would have done, I don't know. But in the comics Bucky is much more reliant on Steve (even when he's dead) than Steve is on Bucky. Steve has had decades without Bucky, and has a much bigger circle of friends, in the comics. Bucky comes with the same "brainwashed assassin for over half a century" backstory, and the only thing he really hopes for is to make Steve proud.

Yea, I know that comic Steve must've missed Bucky a lot, but he had lived without him for a long time and had a chance to move on. MCU Steve didn't get any closure and was still struggling with his place in the world and with connecting with people. Bucky was one of the few people he ever truly knew, so...he hadn't even finished grieving him when he found out he was actually alive.

Don't I know it. I get that. When people say he is I wonder what movie they watched. Bucky is a victim, not a villain. He was simply a tool used by the real villain of the story, which was Hydra and Alexander Pierce.

Most of Bucky's time as Captain America was spent with him questioning whether he actually deserved it, and knowing he could't reject it even if he doesn't because Steve believed in him. Natasha, Sam and Clint (after Clint is a jerk for a few months) work on putting him back together, with varying results. It WAS depressing. I have a feeling it will be even more depressing in the MCU, regardless of what happens with Chris's Steve.

Oh Bucky, always thinking of Steve... In a way it's disheartening that he doesn't seem to want much for himself besides...well, doing whatever will make Steve proud or happy, but...at the same time at least he was doing good and helping people? And working on getting better; that's always important.

How is this even possible? I'm already horrified at the thought that Steve could die and Bucky could be left alone to shoulder the weight of his past and learn to manage a future without him. I don't want any of this. This is too much for my heart to handle.

Well, for a while comic Bucky was quite certain Steve should have killed him, and was even kind of angry that he didn't. Lots of self-hatred there. He was a good guy, but he didn't think he DESERVED to be one of the good guys. He's a bit better now, but there's always an edge of desperation to what he does, like he's trying to prove himself over and over.

It's going to be more depressing even if Steve doesn't die, just due to the canon differences in Bucky, and in his and Steve's relationship. I don't know what it becomes other than a horror show if Steve does die. ;_;

Ooo, I remember the bit where he wished for death and ran off, avoiding Steve. I felt so bad for Bucky. He went through so much, then he gets himself back and spends his time hating himself over things he couldn't control. I mean, I kind of get it, but it wasn't fair. So much in their lives isn't fair, but they deserve to be happy! Even you, Bucky. ESPECIALLY you, Bucky.

Right, because Bucky in the comics was a teen when he met Steve, and he was his partner, but in movie verse it's suggested they grew up together, had very little else and leaned on one another. Shit, this is going to be bad... But no matter what I'll just be pleased that they're together. I bet they will be too. (Eventually.)

Yeah. While Bucky's movie backstory is a bit…confused…in the MCU (I thought it was canon that he was an orphan, but then tWS flashback talks about his "folks"), they're definitely a lot, LOT closer. Comic Bucky and Cap were friends, and long-time partners, but there was a power differential and Bucky was explicitly placed with Cap to be his partner. MCU Steve and Bucky are ~~boyfriends~~ ~~soul mates~~ best friends that see each other through times great and miserable. Encapsulated, their MCU relationship is summed up with the "little guy from Brooklyn too stupid to run away from a fight" line.

I think it was canon that they were both orphans but they ret-conned that for Cap 2? Though maybe I'm wrong about that, not sure... Now I want to go watch my Captain America special features and see if they mention it anywhere.

Comic Cap and Bucky were brought together by an outside force and didn't know each other before the war, but MCU Steve grew up with Bucky and so had a stronger connection with him. I see what you mean. Fighting beside someone has to create a strong bond, but Steve and Bucky already had an unbreakable bond that they brought with them to war, so they would've needed each other even more. Ugh. Ugh.

From what I know, the orphan background as canon was established in the tie-in comic? Between that and the Red Skull apparently not being (conventionally) racist, I really need to go find and read it...

Right, I've heard someone else mention that before too. I need to get my hand on these tie-in comics...

I read the tie-in for Winter Soldier but never came across the other one. The background information would be nice, if nothing else.

I torrented all of the Cap tie-ins - I can see if I can find the links again, or upload them for you if you can't torrent?

Ah, no, I don't want you to go to that trouble! I did search but I'm not sure what's what. It's called First Vengeance, right? Are there only four issues? I see those four and it says complete, but on the Marvel announcement it says that's an eight issue comic, so I'm confused. I need to switch to my computer, this would be faster, lol.

Maybe I can find it elsewhere.
