too true. The whole first movie is them courting and then having a bad breakup, so it makes sense that this movie is the painful reconciliation of former lovers.

It makes a lot of sense for either lovers OR really good friends. I can live with both readings of the characters; but I do see a trend lately where people just fail to see friendships can be really damn intense, too.

I mean, I like slashing as much as the next gal, but I'd be pretty upset if my best friend betrayed and abandoned me.

Yeah but they hung out for like ... two months tops in XMFC.

I kept leaning over and telling me sister, "They need to just have an angry makeout session." She just kept going "Stahhhppppp."

And yeah, they should just go for it. I doubt McAvoy and Fassbender would have any qualms about it.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-08 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Haven't Magneto and Professor X been considered one of the top homoerotic non-canon couples in fiction since... long before the X-men movies? Pretty sure people were speculating about them since like, before the Internet.

And yeah, I think their relationship in First Class and the sequel is extremely easy to read as gay, to the point where I can't say with confidence that the implication is accidental. I'm not in the fandom, but I heard the actors actually describe it as a love story between them (the first movie, that is) though of course they didn't say if it was sexual or not.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-08 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
(OP)

Yeah, from what I can tell Professor X/Magneto is the one slash pairing even a lot of dudebro comics nerds admit would make sense/should be canon. The reason I specified the movies is because it feels like the cast and crew of (especially) the new movies have gone all out talking about what a love story it is, like you said. McAvoy constantly brings it up, the behind the scenes documentary on the First Class DVD has one of the screenwriters talking about how Hank/Raven (which is explicitly framed as romantic) is the B-side story to Charles/Erik, and now you have Kinberg who wrote the DOFP screenplay saying:

“If First Class was Erik’s story and Days Of Future Past is Charles’s story, then Apocalypse will be both of their stories. The first movie was about Erik becoming empowered. That’s the origin story of a man’s power. Days Of Future Past is about a guy who is a mess, masterminding the end of this massive movie. So they are both at their peak powers at the start of Apocalypse, so Apocalypse for me is culmination of that three-act love story.”

And it's just like, come on, guys, clearly everyone on that team would be up for it, just do it. Though I know that, realistically, an alternate universe comic where Charles and Erik are/get together would still be more likely than that (for a relative value of "likely" when talking about things that will never happen).

But here he says they should've had sex and gotten married. And Fassbender likes to sing “Sometimes when we touch, the honesty's too much” about Charles/Erik. (And, well, he's done it before about himself and James too, lol. They both have a good sense of humor.)

I think they'd do it in a heartbeat, but the studio would never go there because of any controversy. (Even though imo OP is right and the relationship already reads that way regardless, but what can you do.)

I just can't seem them as simply friends. Maybe my slash goggles are on too tight, but I don't think McAvoy or Fassbender help.

As long as you're not expecting other to read it that way (and insisting that it's 100% absolute canon!!!), I think you can interpret it any way you like.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-08 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
As long as you don't insist they are straight and "only friends" as 100% canon, and expecting others to read it that way, you can also interpret it any way you like. ;)

Someone once said to take every chess scene in XMFC and replace it with a sex scene. Said practice makes even more sense in DOFP.

That works suprisingly well for all of the scenes.

(Except how the end of X-men 3 suddenly becomes less sad and a lot more creepy, if you imagine Magneto maturbating in a public park...)

As someone else said, Xavier and Magneto were read as a couple long before the movies, but yep, it's just getting "worse" with so much fuel. What I wonder is when we're gonna get our AU where they were/are together. C'mon Marvel, you gave us alt Wolverine with alt Herc, alt Cap with female Iron Man, you can do this.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-09 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
I just send people to this link if they disagree with me that Eric and Charles were together in a romantic sense. If freakin E! Hollywood sees it I'm pretty sure most of the population can see it as well.

Steve? Really?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-09 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not in this fandom at all, but the whole "first name rather than superhero name" thing that I see in secrets irks me to an irrational degree.

Why? I find that using the superhero name is much more emotionally distancing than their first name.

I think you commented on the wrong secret, but both in the MCU and in the new X-Men movies, the characters call each other by their first names rather than superhero names most of the time. Steve is only Cap/Captain in battle situations, I think Natasha gets called Black Widow exactly once in The Winter Soldier, and the only one who insists on codenames in DOFP is Erik.

These two are the only things getting me through the past series of movies.

…they play chess again? Damn. Suddenly I feel like I have to see this movie, because their FC chess game was the most weirdly sexual thing I'd seen for ages, and that includes actual scenes of simulated intercourse!

My older sister who doesn't really know about shipping and headcanons or the like went to see this with me, she called the first one Brokeback X-Men.

At the part where Charles first sees Erik and punches him and says, "I am never getting inside that head again." She leaned over to me and asked if they were actually together at some point in the comics because really.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-09 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't see Charles as a sexual character. The scene where he says he raised mystique is very interesting. I think he's a sort of father figure, even god like figure to the others. To me Erik is the closest he's got to an equal. But no matter what, he can control him if he doesn't wear the mask. So he's also a bit alone with his abilities.

I think it's just a very intense relationship, but not sexual, I don't get that from it at all.
