And the first episode is up on Hulu and I think crunchyroll. Discuss!

(Although I will plead that you please have something to say other than whining that it's not the old Sailor Moon series.)

Other than the animarion being cheap and lazy, it was pretty okay. The opening was nice, but I didn't care for the song. Kotono did a great job as Usagi.

Didn't care for the CGI transformation scene.

The eyes and faces still freak me out in motion, but i'm happy that the expressions otherwise are pretty good, having never seen the original.

Looking at all the gifs from it - still need to get around to watching it - I realized just how I much I'm not going to care about the series until Venus appears.

Stars was my favorite season from the old anime, so aside from then taking ages to get there, Sailor Stars are probably going to be around far less and the Usagi/Seiya drastically reduced. The reboot is not catering to my inner nine year old :(

As a guess, I wouldn't anticipate seeing Venus until sometime around November/December, depending on how they pace it. Considering Mercury is appearing next episode, it might be sooner, but I think they'll start padding the story out at about episode 3/4.

The character designs don't look so weird to me any more. The CG animation was... well I really think it would have been better without it. The rest of the animation wasn't too bad, but could have been better considering all the hype. Not much to say about the plot since it is the typical Sailor Moon beginning, I'm hoping this adaptation will have its own interesting variations. I liked background music too.

I watched it out of curiosity and... dear God, was her voice always that terribly whiny and annoying? (I heard it's the same voice actress.) I highly doubt I'm going to be able to keep watching it, it's like nails on a chalk board for me...

She's also 20 years older. The 90s princesses (Jodi Benson, Paige O'Hara, and Lea Salonga) are all older and sound significantly different. Unless you're a spot-on VA like Nancy Cartwright (Bart Simpson), voices warp.

Sailor Moon's VA might be trying to overcompensate to sound like she used to.

It was even worse in the first anime. You could always wait for the dub.

The creepy wiggly spider hands during the transformation still creep me out, other than that it was surprisingly good!

I saw the first episode and I'm more curious to see how the pacing will be for the rest of the show because the first series dragged out all of the episodes but I think Mercury appears in the second one here.

I'll keep watching, I'm waiting for Venus and Chibi-Usa. And Saturn. Well I love Sailor Moon so I'll probably just keep watching no matter how good/bad.

Underwhelmed, sadly. The CGI was...weird and out-of-place, it took me right out of the whole thing, and you can tell that it was intentionally padded for time because it's going to be something they reuse often. The original series did that too, of course; cuts down on production costs to just use the same thing over and over so you don't have to animate as much of an episode.

Also I wish they'd have her emote more. I feel almost zero personality.

It was...okay, on the whole, but in no way did it live up to the ridiculous hype behind it.

Just looked at the transformation sequence. No thanks.

WE won't miss.

I enjoyed it! C: I did have to keep reminding myself that Usagi is 14, because I'm used to reading such long legs as being for adults, but I'll become accustomed to the style quickly.

I haven't read the manga (yet!), and I couldn't help comparing this first ep to the original anime. It's interesting how many scenes are staged the same way, and the similar events and character designs. Not surprising, since both were based on the manga. I'm looking forward to the Nephrite episodes, because that's where the 1st anime really did their own thing. I'll be able to enjoy Crystal for itself, as I won't be comparing it.

I liked the transformation sequence, and was again amused at how similar it was to the original. (Disclaimer: I haven't seen comparison gifs or watched original SM in years. I'm going on memory.) It wasn't obviously CGI to me, and I don't know if I'd have realized it was without already hearing about it from the leak, which I missed viewing before it was deleted.

I enjoyed the opening, and if my ears don't deceive me, the ending song is sung by the girls' seiyuu. Yay!

My only quibble about the ep is the lower animation quality. In particular I noticed a lot of zoomed-in shots, and Usagi talking without her mouth being visible. Also we never saw Luna produce the brooch, it just suddenly appeared. Even the first anime had that stock footage of Luna doing a flip in the air and materializing various items. I thought for sure Toei would pour some money into the first ep's production values, at least, but I guess not. If I could change one thing about the ep, I'd like to increase the number of drawn frames by 50%. I likes me some fluid anime. C:

I liked it. I thought it was fucking pretty. And really what we think doesn't really matter. We aren't the target audience.

We kind of are though? It premiered internationally through online streaming, they were definitely targeting adult fans of Sailor Moon through out the globe.

The story was good, a great adaptation of the manga so far.

I feel the same way about the art as I did before the episode premiered, it's not good.

There are two main things I'd wish they get rid off, 1. the 3d in the opening and the transformation and 2. the eye style and head shapes. I think I could even live with the 3d if they could just put Usagi's eyes in the proper perspective and gave her a consistent skull that didn't look so off in certain frames.

The backgrounds were good and the coloring was okay (a little too bright in places, even for a magical girl anime.) I really want them to improve on the art in general though, Sailor Moon is a very visual story so I'd be very happy if it was done right.

I enjoyed it, though I found Usagi's voice a but grating for most of the episode. Hopefully it'll get less whiny as the character matures. The animation was fine (and I really liked the eyecatches, weirdly enough) but I could've done without the CG transformation sequence, I think it would've looked nicer in 2D. Looking forward to the rest of the cast showing up soon-ish.

I liked it other than the transformation sequence. It just looked... awkward. I always loved the transformation sequences in the original, but this one just looks so weird and out of place. :/

-The animation looks super cheap. Weirdly stiff in some places (esp her hair), and the odd character designs weren't improved by being animated. TBH I spent the entire episode thinking 'I wish Gainax/Kyoani/anyone had picked this up other than Toei'. The characters seem to have two expressions. (1. Eyes open 2. Eyes closed) Really a shame since the first anime and the manga both are SO expressive and give the characters so much life and movement. And the transformation is really really bad compared to the old one. Even the shading on her hand in the beginning is less detailed.

-idr the manga 100%, but from what I can recall this followed it nearly exact. The pacing was really good while still sticking close to the original story. There was a lot more focus on the Usagi/Mamoru romance than in the original show. I can't decide if I like the more heavy-handed approach or not. I'm looking forward to seeing the other sailors, but after watching this (20 minutes of story, four minutes of opening+ending+transformation), I feel like the once-every-two-weeks schedule is insane. Esp at this kind of crappy production level.

-I loved the music all throughout. The opening isn't as catchy as Densetsu or the english dub opening, but it does it's job well enough. The voices were mostly great. Usagi is just as grating as I remember, but tbh with the fairly expressionless animation her voice is the only thing really bringing her to life.
