I agree with the secret in principle, but you ruined it with the implication that everything today sucks and older stuff is inherently better. Sorry cupcake it don't work that way. A lot of shit got made then, a lot of gold gets made now. Bored of this whole sentiment. It's just as obnoxious as people who won't watch anything that isn't under ten years old.

(for what it's worth my favourite era of film is the late 70s to the mid-80s)

(Anonymous) 2014-07-06 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree so hard with this.

You know why it seems like "everything was better" back in the Good Ol' Days? It's because the good shit is what's remembered. Forty years from now, someone will be like, "man, I wish movies today were like movies in the 20-teens" because they'll have only seen today's "gold" and not the streambeds of shit that it was buried in.

A lot of our rose-colored glasses regarding classic Hollywood is largely because only the most beloved or most critically praised movies stay in print or in syndication.

Seriously I've had enough of that shit.

[personal profile] ex_mek82 2014-07-06 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
You're right on the nose with that one.

That's what drives me nuts when people say "Oh, 60's/70's/80's music/gaming/movies/television was so much better". Well no shit Sherlock, of course people will only remember what they like or was generally regarded as good/classic from those time periods. Especially when studios/publishes/cable networks continually keep them in circulation over the stuff that's largely faded from memory or was reviled by the Court of Public Opinion.

This. I think people who dismiss older media by default DO miss out, but shit got made in every decade. Age does not necessarily make it good.

Could you recommend some films from your favorite era? That tends to be my least favorite era for some reason but I'm wondering if there may be some hidden gems that I would like.

Also, I completely agree with your comment.

Yup.

There was a lot of shit on TV when I was a kid and I kind of roll my eyes whenever I see the 'the 90's were the best for TV/movies' posts, because fuck no they weren't. There's always good and bad stuff in every era.

i was with you until i read "instead of whatever's airing". old stuff isn't better than new stuff just because it's old; that doesn't make any sense. there is some excellent recent media out there right now, and dismissing it because it's new makes you just as bad as people who dismiss older stuff because it's old.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-06 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I really enjoy vintage media of all types. Occasionally there's nothing current that I enjoy and then I end up feeling very isolated and out of the loop.

I like the movie, I own it on DVD, I think it's very good.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-06 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
But, honestly, not everything older is better. And while there are people out there that seem very against watching anything beyond a few years ago, many people have been known to like movies/books/shows from different eras. Just because there isn't a (big) fandom, it doesn't mean people are ignoring something.

That's a terrible poster, though.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-06 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think the OP's saying that all old stuff is better than new stuff. I think he or she's saying that it's a pity people will watch new stuff that's shitty when they could be watching old stuff that's good if they didn't dismiss it just because it's old. And I have no argument with that.

I disagree with you that a lot of media today sucks or that it's less good than in the past (especially because there were a LOT of shitty movies back in the day just like there are shitty things airing today. We're just more likely to know about the better ones because...well, people probably ignored the shittier ones). I love a lot of the films/movies that have come out recently and I like that media is gradually becoming more and more diverse.

It is too bad that most older films don't have much of a fandom though, especially since a lot of old films are like super slashy (The Wild North with Stewart Granger and Wendell Corey comes to mind. One of the male leads even calls the other "bébé" throughout the film. And they spend a decent chunk of the movie chained together. I love it so much). At least Singin' in the Rain has a bit of a fandom, and multiple Cosmo/Don/Kathy fics which pleases me beyond words.

I've had a couple of people who say they wouldn't ever watch a black and white or 'old' movie be converted by that very film!

There's loads of good stuff being made now, but I don't understand how anyone could write something off just because it was made over a certain number of years ago.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-06 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
It might not be just that things are old, in the sense that 'old = bad', some of it might be that people are put off by the various conventions and techniques from different eras of film? You see that argument a lot of Doctor Who fandom, comparing the old school pacing and shoddy effects of Classic Who with the rapid-fire and arguably OTT delivery of NuWho, and in a lot of ways it's a fair enough argument. Some older techniques and conventions can sit really oddly with modern audiences, and if someone doesn't have the patience or just isn't interested, they might not want to bother with it.

One of the more interesting film experiences I've had in company was when one of my professors for the History of the City module in Geography put up a short 1921 silent film ("Manhatta" by Strand and Sheeler, for those curious, it's on youtube), and about half the class either stared at it blankly or started muttering comments about the title cards and the music and other silent film conventions (you can get various versions with different music on youtube, I think the original score was lost, and possibly would have been made up on the spot by the cinema musicians anyway). If you're not used to the conventions, it can be really weird. I didn't have that problem, from a combination of growing up with a) only the local TV stations which aired a crap tonne of older stuff because it was cheap, and b) a love of sci-fi that had me looking up things like Fritz Lang's Metropolis and weird 60s TV shows as soon as I had the resources.

Even funny things like the lighting and the film stock can be noticeable. Things made in the 1970s, in particular, tend to be instantly recognisable by the lighting/palette/texture (I don't actually know the film term for it). I think it's part of the reason I find some 70s films and shows so comforting - less for the actual content, and more because the lighting reminds me of the shows I grew up with. (In the 90s, I should add, the local stations really were about 80% reruns).

So, while you'll find gold and crud in all eras, and the actual stories told by film can be either or, whether or not you enjoy certain eras can also be affected by more material things, like the conventions and technology of presentation?

Just because older films aren't actively talked about in a fandom sense, doesn't mean there aren't fans.

I present to you the Some Like it Hot tag, the 12 Angry Men tag, the Dr. Strangelove tag, the It's a Wonderful Life tag, and the Voyage la Dans la Lune tag.

That said there are a number of people out there who refuse to watch certain things just because they're old. (I have a coworker who labels any film before 2000 as "old".) But they're stupid, hardly film aficionados, and not worth wasting time getting upset about.

You realize that a good chunk of tumblr has been gushing over Some Like It Hot A LOT recently?

But, the reason I think a lot of old movies don't get much 'play' so to speak is because there is some really...unfortunate stuff in them. Holiday Inn, off the top of my head, with its black face.

There are movies like White Christmas and Court Jester (and well a lot of Danny Kaye films) that are shining gems, but I'm also in my 30s and grew up with these movies on TMC and AMC.

I understand how you feel. I adore old movies and wish I could find more people to gush with. Obviously, there's some good stuff coming out nowadays too, but I just loved the storytelling in the 30's-50's. All About Eve is one of my all-time favorites for a reason.

Some like it hot is a masterpiece. But otherwise not really agreeing with this secret. People will always be interested in what's right in front of their nose. Only a bunch might take steps backwards and find something that has existed for a long time but it's not that clear.
