(for what it's worth my favourite era of film is the late 70s to the mid-80s)

(Anonymous) 2014-07-06 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)You know why it seems like "everything was better" back in the Good Ol' Days? It's because the good shit is what's remembered. Forty years from now, someone will be like, "man, I wish movies today were like movies in the 20-teens" because they'll have only seen today's "gold" and not the streambeds of shit that it was buried in.

Seriously I've had enough of that shit.

That's what drives me nuts when people say "Oh, 60's/70's/80's music/gaming/movies/television was so much better". Well no shit Sherlock, of course people will only remember what they like or was generally regarded as good/classic from those time periods. Especially when studios/publishes/cable networks continually keep them in circulation over the stuff that's largely faded from memory or was reviled by the Court of Public Opinion.

There was a lot of shit on TV when I was a kid and I kind of roll my eyes whenever I see the 'the 90's were the best for TV/movies' posts, because fuck no they weren't. There's always good and bad stuff in every era.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-06 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)That's a terrible poster, though.

It is too bad that most older films don't have much of a fandom though, especially since a lot of old films are like super slashy (The Wild North with Stewart Granger and Wendell Corey comes to mind. One of the male leads even calls the other "bébé" throughout the film. And they spend a decent chunk of the movie chained together. I love it so much). At least Singin' in the Rain has a bit of a fandom, and multiple Cosmo/Don/Kathy fics which pleases me beyond words.

There's loads of good stuff being made now, but I don't understand how anyone could write something off just because it was made over a certain number of years ago.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-06 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)One of the more interesting film experiences I've had in company was when one of my professors for the History of the City module in Geography put up a short 1921 silent film ("Manhatta" by Strand and Sheeler, for those curious, it's on youtube), and about half the class either stared at it blankly or started muttering comments about the title cards and the music and other silent film conventions (you can get various versions with different music on youtube, I think the original score was lost, and possibly would have been made up on the spot by the cinema musicians anyway). If you're not used to the conventions, it can be really weird. I didn't have that problem, from a combination of growing up with a) only the local TV stations which aired a crap tonne of older stuff because it was cheap, and b) a love of sci-fi that had me looking up things like Fritz Lang's Metropolis and weird 60s TV shows as soon as I had the resources.
Even funny things like the lighting and the film stock can be noticeable. Things made in the 1970s, in particular, tend to be instantly recognisable by the lighting/palette/texture (I don't actually know the film term for it). I think it's part of the reason I find some 70s films and shows so comforting - less for the actual content, and more because the lighting reminds me of the shows I grew up with. (In the 90s, I should add, the local stations really were about 80% reruns).
So, while you'll find gold and crud in all eras, and the actual stories told by film can be either or, whether or not you enjoy certain eras can also be affected by more material things, like the conventions and technology of presentation?

I present to you the Some Like it Hot tag, the 12 Angry Men tag, the Dr. Strangelove tag, the It's a Wonderful Life tag, and the Voyage la Dans la Lune tag.
That said there are a number of people out there who refuse to watch certain things just because they're old. (I have a coworker who labels any film before 2000 as "old".) But they're stupid, hardly film aficionados, and not worth wasting time getting upset about.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-06 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)But, the reason I think a lot of old movies don't get much 'play' so to speak is because there is some really...unfortunate stuff in them. Holiday Inn, off the top of my head, with its black face.
There are movies like White Christmas and Court Jester (and well a lot of Danny Kaye films) that are shining gems, but I'm also in my 30s and grew up with these movies on TMC and AMC.
