Yeah, there was actually a gay male blogger who HATED that Hawkeye Initiative thing. He said that the whole thing was about making character look effeminate and how that was played for laughs (and ridicule). And you can say that, No it is about the exagerrated poses! But everyone was always making fun of how girly they look.

I always feel kind of weird when I see people mocking ridiculous poses because I can usually do the ones that they call impossible and some of them are actually really comfortable for me.

And yeah, I do feel like quite a few of the people laughing at the male versions are just going along with the status quo by laughing at a man acting "girly".

Isn't it only a "hyper-feminine" pose because we've been conditioned to it read it as such to begin with?

I like male characters with feminine mannerisms/poses/etc. I guess it is annoying that it's always meant to be ridiculed, though.

I think the boobs-and-butt pose bugs people because it's obviously meant to be sexual and there is no equivalent sexual pose for male characters. People would be more okay with female characters being sexualised if male characters also were (and I don't think exaggerated musculature counts. That's more to appeal to male fantasies about being super strong).

Lol what. Not if you have an actual working spine.

People don't like those poses because they treat the female character like a sex object and frankly it just looks stupid most of the time.
When people complain, most guys or girls tend to not understand or care.
But if you draw a male superhero like Hawkeye for instance, pushing his chesticals and marshmallow butt out like most female characters are drawn (http://31.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mefp86JXbb1qjsj4mo1_1280.jpg)
Then you're able to understand why the whole "UNF GOTTA MAKE SURE THE STRAIGHT MAKE READER CAN SEE MY FAT ASS AND FUNBAGS AT THE SAME TIME" poses are so stupid and what a huge double standard the whole thing is.

Personally, I'm less concerned by Misato's pose there than I am by Shinji's face.

when I see those poses I don't think "feminine" I think "ow my spinal cord hurts just looking at that"

Are there actual photos of the boobs and butt pose? I wanna see that! Unless you tried doing it yourself, in which case your spine is a national treasure.

I do think that things like hawkeye initiative at least point out how ridiculous the poses are, or how we've gendered them, but it's true that a lot of it doesn't exactly account for aesthetic and silhouettes that may be in mind when they're drawn. Generally speaking, dude sexualisation isn't portrayed the same way in comics (like half-naked dudes who aren't playing it up for the "camera" isn't quite the same thing). There is arguably cheesecake, which could be unintentional.

[personal profile] sachiko_san 2014-07-10 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
It's because the pose in Leifeldian in terms of anatomy. I also don;t think that pose in hyperfeminine either, it's too disturbing.

But I do enjoy the picture you used, I'm getting a kick out of how they drew everything Gurren Lagaan like.

The point is that real people in real situations have no reason whatsoever to twist their spines into a boobs-n-butt pose. Especially when fighting!! It just makes all the action look embarrassingly ineffective. Ditching functional, natural poses for the sake of cheap fanservice is pathetic.

And yes it's possible for a character to be cartoony and exaggerated while still having sensible poses.

Yeah, I think it's only hyper-feminine because we're so used to seeing those poses paired with the female body. It's not only from comics that we see this pairing. For example, high heels create that arch in the back that we associate so strongly with femininity. But I don't think that women naturally arch their back more than men, or that men have less ability to arch their back, or that high heels are a footwear women choose for biological reasons (correct me if I'm wrong, though). Despite this, if a guy arches his back in the same way, it will read as feminine.

The fact that you find a male doing a pose that has no biological basis to be associated with femininity as weird and feminine kind of proves the point you're trying to refute?

Okay I will say this, sometimes the stuff that goes around tumblr is ridiculous because it takes an obviously exaggerated pose and makes it stiff and boring in the name of "realism." There is nothing wrong with exaggeration in art, there is also nothing wrong with bringing a little sexiness to art.

The problem is with the fact that it's almost always women who are posed this way, and in the case of comics in particular it's not just the anatomy but the ridiculousness of these poses in how they relate to the story. Is a woman always going to remain perfectly sexy when she's in the middle of a fight? I don't really think so.

These things can be hard to take on case by case, and yeah I definitely think tumblr misses the mark sometimes on how they should be critiquing the art, but it's still an important dialogue.

Lets break this down nice and simple. Yes, stylization exaggerates, which means "angry" goes from http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/image/4782648-3x4-460x613.jpg to http://art.ngfiles.com/images/139000/139784_shenaniganon_angry-face.png

But not all exaggeration is created equal! It's not that every single thing is turned up to 250% all of the time. You pick and choose what to exaggerate, what to simplify. Like http://igm.rit.edu/~animation2d/wp/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/screwball.jpg or http://www.propositto.com.br/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/pbanimation17-big.jpg shows a set style to follow to get across character traits.

Now look at this. http://fc06.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2014/013/1/4/tina_nice_curves_by_boobrepli-d722l98.jpg

I wonder what sort of character traits the exaggeration is supposed to get across? What could it possibly be?

It's not that it's just exaggerating, it's that the purpose of the exaggeration is sex, and it tends to happen every. single. time. To the point old ladies in wheelchairs are put in dominatrix gear http://eschergirls.tumblr.com/post/15854753684/alamaris-submitted-im-under-the-assumption and it gets really old really fast. It's like being unable to unhear the most popular stock sound effects. Why yes, there is only one sound cats ever make on TV, and there's only one way to draw women. And it sucks.

a) It's physically possible, but incredibly uncomfortable and no one would ever put their body in that position except in extreme circumstances (whatever Misato is doing here does not necessitate simultaneous boobs-butt).

b) The complaint is not about the pose's stylization, it's the use of stylization to objectify women.

c) Hey, you know that feeling that the hyper-feminine, exploitative pose would look silly on men? THAT'S EXACTLY HOW IT LOOKS ON WOMEN TOO. What you're saying is essentially, "Well, it looks okay on women because I EXPECT them to be put in ridiculous poses to show off their body."
