Looking for advice

(Anonymous) 2014-07-12 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
My birthday is coming up in a few weeks, all of 36 years old. It's on a Thursday and while I could take off work, it's a little weird to just take it off, then back to work on Friday and then the weekend. Though my supervisor said I could take two days off no worries.

These are the my issues in my head: If I take off it's difficult for me to find something to do. I keep to myself, have a few friends but my best friend lives three states away. I have a difficult time "being in the moment". I mean people that go somewhere and interact with what they are doing and can report back absolute happiness or sadness at something. I've always wondered if I have a bit of aspergers in that regard. I can't sleep in all day, I'm just used to being up by 6 a.m. You got to get up and go early to get the jobs done sort of thing.

What do I like to do? Exercise and eat. Well I have an internal problem with eating in that I worry too much about nutrition and portion sizes. Honestly I think the best thing I would enjoy is just walking. Walking around and looking but not needing to really pay attention to stuff.

The other best thing I think I would like to do is visit Chicago. But it would be by myself and while I tend to keep to myself, I wouldn't want to visit a big city by myself. Weird I know. And also I think my family would worry about me being myself there (the city is three hours away and I've only been there a few times so I don't know my way around at all).

So I guess sort of adventurous but not quite. Maybe I should go to an amusement park. Anyone been to Holiday World in Indiana? I've never been.

So maybe the best advice is: stop saying "so" before a sentence, pull up your britches and bite the wind? (That and make sure mom is ok since I'm her caregiver but my brother should be able to help with that.)

Hey, I've never been in Indiana, but I mentioned this before: I've been to amusement parks on my own before and really enjoyed it (especially on week days as there are less people).

Also, not sure why visiting a big city would be that bad - it's a good place to be anonymous.

Also not sure how mobile you are or how close you are to stuff, but maybe you could explore a bit and find a new place for a nature walk?

Isn't it funny how I have this smartphone but still don't use it all the full potential? That is a really good point! Research up front is good. And I remember your comment on amusement parks! Hmm… that's the other problem. So many possibilities my eyes get dizzy!

Not OP

For a lot of people it can be pretty intimidating, particularly if you're not used to big cities and/or the city in question has the...less than stellar reputation that Chicago does where crime is concerned.

Second the comment that big cities are good for being anonymous. People tend not to pay attention to you in big cities because... well, they just don't have the time, you know? Chicago is also a nice city to explore. You've got the Field Museum, Art Institute, Shedd Aquarium, Navy Pier...

Or if you want something more low key, why not pack yourself a picnic lunch and explore a park near you? Hit up Google Maps and see what's nearby/within driving distance. Most state parks have a website that tell you what trails they have as well as basic maps. You can walk around at your leisure, eat whenever and whatever you like and generally chill.

The Shedd Aquarium is really nice! But that's an excellent idea: exploring a park and just people watch! Or eat then walk around. There are a lot of parks, that sounds wonderful!

Ohh… then I just read that Pierogi Festival is right next to my birthday. It's a long drive but definitely something different. Duh self, you picked up the 2014 booklet of festivals in Indiana. Look through it!

See there are so many options. I need to knock myself around to pull up the britches and do it.

Just going to agree with what others have said; maybe just walk around the city, or hit up google and look for parks (did this last week! Found a beautiful botanical garden) or other places that might interest you. (Don't know what else you're into, but maybe a museum?)

Hmm, and I'd say "You could eat out!" but if you worry about nutrition...well, you could always pack a meal and bring it with you, or you could again, check out the restaurants where you're going ahead of time, see if they have nutritional information on their website and then plan accordingly.

I hope you have a good time!

I live about an hour's drive away from Holiday World, and yes, it's a fun place. Just don't be shocked by all the Christian stuff. The main restaurant has a mural with a lot of Christian scenes on it. It made me a tad uncomfortable, to eat pizza while being stared at by Jesus.

That being said, I enjoyed myself! There are some great rides, and the soft drinks are free, the owners appear to be in the park pretty much all day long (and are friendly and approachable).

You can always take something to read with you, if you get bored waiting in line.

Taking your birthday off from work isn't so weird. I do it all the time, regardless of what day of the workweek it falls on.

I didn't work the day I was born, so I sure as hell ain't gonna work on any other birthday if I can help it.

By the way, you don't need to save up adventurous stuff for your birthday. If you want to have an adventure, have an adventure. You can even do it for one of your friends' birthdays, or just a few random non-special days during the year.
