I think I'm just going to go with "death of the author" on this one and let the show speak for itself. In my world, Masayoshi and Goto fall in love and eventually get married. The end.

wait what

At first this sounded like my kind of thing, then you got to the 'were never gay' and 'the marriage proposal' part...

I would say 'what the fuck is wrong with this character' but I'm thinking the character is fine and the problem is the writer. Ship on, man. Your version makes a hell of a lot more sense than anything the scriptwriter clarified.

I feel like I need context for this. Lots of context for this. All the context in the world. There has to be a context where that isn't completely stupid, right?

They didn't say 'Masayoshi and Goto aren't gay'.

Their comments were still dumb though.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-20 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
What did they say? Got a link?

I'll have to dig through my tumblr, but it was basically:

-Masayoshi and Goto didn't actually grow throughout the series.
-Neither of them really understand what love is.
-Masayoshi proposed because he's an idiot.

They're stupid and frankly incorrect, but they don't actually invalidate the 'homo end'. I've noticed that it's super common for anime directors to make weird, wishy washy statements like this.

It's also worth noting that months after they made these statements, official artwork of them getting married was released.

This show is completely nuts and borderline terrible and that the writers had no idea what they were doing (and apparently weren't even attempting character development for their main characters AMAZING) is actually not surprising.

I thiiiiink this show is a bit of a flash in a pan. People mistook it for something much greater than it was. It's just not well-written enough to withstand much scrutiny.

Or some people legitimately think it's a good show with solid character development? It's been a few months, and I still love it just as much, which pretty much solidifies that it's not a flash in the pan for me personally because my attention span is quite short. Actually the more tokusatsu I watch, the more I appreciate Samflam and think it's great.

My thoughts exactly. While it admirable that there the two guys got together in the end, that really doesn't mean show is good. People seem to be overlooking the shoddy writing just for that.

The interview OP is talking about

>And before it aired, the director said it wasn't a gay anime, didn't he? (laugh)
>Director says that they didn't have Masayoshi say they should get married because he was gay, but just because he's the kind of character who can say crazy stuff like that
>And they're together even after that, aren't they?
>Script writer says it's really just like they were before - Goto hasn't really gotten over his heartbreak either, and they aren't really gay for each other or anything

(Anonymous) 2014-07-21 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
That's why there is official art of them getting married! Because they are totes not gay. No Homo.

That interview was so retarded the only appropriate response is to ignore it completely. Like, what was he thinking even saying that stuff? Especially about the character development.

"Whoops, some people think this show is better than it actually is, better correct them so I can make sure it sells even worse than before!"

(Anonymous) 2014-07-21 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
I really doubt that interview would have much of an effect, If any at all, on sales.

Ha. Hearing something about a gay end, and the writer director so-and-so saying it was no homo, is the reason I'm even watching this show (only halfway through atm). I don't particularly care for what a writer trying to canonize something without actually showing it, or trying to force an interpretation, so wevs.

Also, you are so right about this show being awful and enjoyable. I'm super entertained with this show right now, but holy wow it's all over the place. I keep going, "Oh. It's like the Kick-Ass movie and about bylaws. Oh. It's about striving to just be a good person. Oh. Madoka. Oh. Nvm. Oh. Oh. OH?"

This secret gave me so much incredible enjoyment.
