Genderswap and abusive ships

(Anonymous) 2014-07-20 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Different anon but let's try again

Genderswapped fictional ships and abusive relationships. Does swapping the genders of any of your ships make it suddenly skeevy?

Re: Genderswap and abusive ships

(Anonymous) 2014-07-20 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
It depends, do you have any examples?

Genderswapped Twilight is really weird to me.

Regular twilight is much worse.

Edwina and Bello? Now I can't get the image of this small woman flying through the forest with this big dude on her back, while telling him things like, "Let's go spider monkey." Instead of breaking the bed she breaks his little Bello, and he's trying to hide it with makeup and a splint and LOL that's so bad but I can't help but laugh.

I actually agree with case on this. This discussion has nothing to offer except to create wank. Please shut this down.

not OP

Why? This thread is aiming to start an actual conversation and is trying to get people to think about why the dynamics of relationships suddenly become socially unacceptable if the genders are switched. What's wrong with it?

I can safely say that all but one of my ships could be considered abusive/unhealthy. And the ship in question could actually be a healthy relationship. I just only ship it for fucked up reasons.

Re: Genderswap and abusive ships

(Anonymous) 2014-07-20 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Man, I worded that wrong. Most of my ships are healthy/not abusive. Only one isn't.

Only the ones that were already skeevy pre-genderswap.

To preface: most yaoi is skeevy to begin with, obvs

But if you swapped most yaoi ukes with girls, it gets suddenly 100% worse and idk why. Maybe because the starting power difference is even greater?

Tsundere archetype gets 100x more skeevier.

Yandere would be worse.

Re: Genderswap and abusive ships

(Anonymous) 2014-07-20 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess Miss Piggy and Kermit would be kind of messed up if they were gender switched.

Re: Genderswap and abusive ships

(Anonymous) 2014-07-20 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I find those two messed up without being gender switched. Regardless of what gender either of them are that reads as a very unhealthy relationship to me. I was bothered by Miss Piggy and the way she acts around Kermit as a child and didn't figure out why until I got older.

i ship mainly slash, but a few of them would be skeevy if one were female. mainly because they're military. the same behaviors between two male soldiers vs between a male and female soldier would be perceived v differently

Ed/Winry would probably come off as kind of fucked up considering the whole "beating him with a wrench" thing. Yeah...

Re: Genderswap and abusive ships

(Anonymous) 2014-07-21 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Not if fem!Ed was still buff with a powerful metal arm like before. The wrench-beating is only potentially humorous* because Winry's not actually a threat to Ed even if she was seriously trying to harm him, if that held true with the genders swapped, it'd still have the same funny potential.

*Some don't find it funny regardless of gender, of course.

Sure, I'll admit it. The most unhealthy relationship I write would be very skeevy if genderswapped. It also just wouldn't work.

This assumes that there are behaviors that are abusive when one gender does it but not when another does, and I don't agree with that. So I guess my answer to the question would be no.

I think Helga/Arnold is skeevy as fuck and people don't tend to realize it because a) it's a childhood nostalgia thing and b) the girl is the crazed stalker. They did an A-plus job of making her sympathetic, but that doesn't mean her actions aren't pretty disturbing.

I mean I ship it too but...

No, I don't think so. I ship some things that would get less skeevy, but they're generally de-skeeved within the canon itself. (For instance, Winston/Florence in Freefall had skeeve potential, and a genderswap would be one way around it, but they themselves discuss their power imbalance, and Winston is very concerned with treating Florence as an equal.)

Well, depending on who was swapped, I could see how it might make a couple of mine less skeevy.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-21 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
It depends on a lot of things, though. Part of that is deciding how the character and relationship dynamics would change with the gender.

I didn't remotely like it at ALL and didn't even remotely ship it in canon as it was (as in, it was one of the main reasons I stopped watching the show), but someone pointed out that if Bolin was female and Eska was male (or if it was Desna instead) in Legend of Korra, there would have been a MUCH larger outcry and not so much, "Oh, but Bolin used to be a womaniser! He needs a strong woman to keep him in line! She's a Strong Female Character! She just doesn't know how to express her love!".

It was abusive from the start and a lot of people DID actually realise that, thank fuck, but if the genders had been swapped then I don't think ANYONE would have supported it.

So that would be a case where it's skeezy and abusive from the start, but some people only would have realised it if the genders were swapped.
