I get it as a reason, but if it's the only reason it's a little alarming.

This. I think doing something you don't enjoy for the sake of feedback/making others happy is a really bad practice, emotions-wise.

And also the writing tends to be crappy, so.

+1

(Anonymous) 2014-07-27 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
But why do you assume it's the only reason? It's not an either/or kind of thing, you can enjoy writing and still want feedback to keep posting. No one said they actually hate writing and do it ONLY for the feedback; as far as I've seen that's just what the people going after OP have claimed. OP could have the whole fic writing out already and only post the installments after x reviews, for all that we know.

And personally, while I hate people publically hold fic ransom because it smacks of desperation, I have no problem at all with OPs attitude. It's their fic, they decide whether or not they want to post it. And if they feel they didn't get enough feedback to warrant the trouble*, that's their decision.

* I decided against posting a fic of mine to FFN because it was for an unpopular pairing in an obscure fandom and I knew that both feedback and readership would probably be basically non-existing, and given the hoops you have to jump through to post to FFN I just decided that it wasn't worth it. Is that "bad-practice, emotions-wise"?

Ah, no. I'm sorry, anon, I jumped to assumptions. If the OP posts the chapters that are already written, it's a completely different matter, and I've no issue with them.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-27 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
To be fair, I have no clue if OP does that. It sounded that way to me, but that could be a knee-jerk reaction to the people in this thread assuming the worst about OP and attacking them for it. As though waiting a bit before posting a chapter is the Worst. Thing. EVER!!!11! and OP is a bad person and needs to re-evaluate their life to figure out why they are such a terrible attention-seeker.

It's just fic.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-27 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't have anything against you decision even if I don't agree (I think that in small fandoms/with unpopular pairings posting and waiting is worth, because sooner or later someone may find it and will be extremely happy), but... posting something in FFN takes even less time (and less typing) than in AO3 and uploading a new chapter takes only 2 clicks more?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-28 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, the fic is posted online, just not on FFN. As I said somewhere else, I post because I love finding fic with that pairing I like and focusing on that theme I want to read about, so I post my fic on the off-chance that someone whose buttons it will push will find it.

We have very different experiences posting fic to FFN, it seems. Have they done away with the silly "upload a document so you can THEN upload it as a new story" thing? It used to take me ages to have a fic or chapter uploaded, most of them spent trying to correct the formatting that FFN would invariably screw up. Even when the most fancy formatting was a word in italics, FFN would still manage to fuck everything up in such a way that it took ages and a shit-ton of frustration to fix everything. Of course, the formatting gets screwed with some new update, anyway, but at least at the moment when I post I want my fic to look nice.

Or at least be readable.

It does, I guess. It's not why I do it, but we all have our reasons, so eh.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-27 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't say I'm indifferent to it — I'm really glad whenever I receive feedback! — but mostly I just want to help in keeping the fandom active and hopefully write enjoyable fics.

[identity profile] sara-lakali.livejournal.com 2014-07-27 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I post my fics to AO3 because I've had bad experiences with losing finished work because of computer and external hard drive crashes. I don't really expect anyone to read my fics, let alone review them. Should I not write and post my things because I don't need or even hope for feedback?

I don't think anyone's indifferent about getting feedback. It's just that it's forbidden to say you like or want it.

I agree with this. People might not want to admit it, but I think most people (not all, but most) who post their fic online want comments/kudos/whatever. I know I do. I mean, I do write fic sometimes and just know that it's unlikely to get any reaction because of the fandom or whatever, and I still post it, but ultimately knowing that people are enjoying it is what makes it feel like posting is worth the effort.

Sometimes you do things because you enjoy the results rather than the process. I like to knit and crochet but I'm not particularly fond of the actual process. I just love being able to use the stuff I make and honestly I like the comments I get on my work. I could see someone coming at writing with the same attitude.

Hm, that's interesting...because with something that seems kinda monotonous and time-consuming like knitting or crocheting, if I happened to not like it, I can't imagine spending any real amount of time doing it. There are other things I could do that would make other people happy, but that would also make me happy.

It's not that I particularly dislike it either. I'm just pretty neutral towards it so it's a good way to keep busy while I'm watching stuff so I don't feel like I completely wasted my time when I could have been doing something productive. I have issues about feeling like I wasted time.

Although the satisfaction I get from it often works row by row rather than only coming after I finish a project, so that could be interpreted as me liking the process.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-28 12:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I knit & crochet while watching the telly.

=.= The scarf I made for my mother cost me three seasons of supernatural.

Oops.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-28 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry to jump in so late here, but... I don't knit/crochet, but I do other types of needlework. The actual process isn't terribly exciting. I don't dislike it (though it can be really tedious if something goes wrong) but like sarillia said, it's more a neutral activity. The end product is what makes it worthwhile. I make things to sell or to give to friends. If they didn't sell or my friends didn't appear to like it, I might still do needlework, but I'd be doing a lot less of it and nobody would even see it but me. That's a somewhat apt comparison to fanfic writing, IMO.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-27 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
writing for me is frustrating and draining and kudos/comments are a really big deal. is that just uncool to admit?

In my fandoms - yes. It is not just uncool to admit it, it's taboo. Expect to get dogpiled if you express such a shallow motivation.

You're supposed to write for ~pure artistic reasons~ and wanting someone to show appreciation just pollutes the purity of the fandom.

Or some such shit.

Excellent distinction you're making, there, and I totally agree :-)
