I see a lot more stupid preachy stuff where the authors are overanxious to make the characters stop and say/think "yes, this BDSM stuff may sound abusive/creepy but it's not because X" and wind up sounding like the characters just randomly stopped in the middle of a session to quote some BDSM education blog. Pulls me right out. I've never seen "BDSM is the only good way" before.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-02 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yea, this. It's like the anal preparation onetwothreefingersdick-instruction manual.
It downright squicks me if the whole tension is broken to remind everyone "noooo, the abuse is not real, just fyi! really not real!!"

(Anonymous) 2014-08-02 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen my share of "X was the only woman in the room the men found alluring, because of her naturally submissive demeanor" and "No truer connection was to be found than that between X and her Master", along with a whole host of Only Subs are truly Strong and Loved bullshit. Always struck me as a bunch of abused subbies desperately trying to convince themselves that vanilla folk don't have satisfying relationships.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-03 08:11 am (UTC)(link)
Somehow that sounds closer to a/b/I dynamics and that's hilarious.

Really? Where are all of these loving BDSM fics? All I can find in my fandoms are tough violent crap with barely no care or love. It gets really squicky at times, too.

FUCKING SAVED ALL OF 'EM! I read others for the first pair - and authors handled it great (first time, I've seen it).

(Anonymous) 2014-08-02 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that is a fairly general trend in fan though. I have quite a lot of not BDSM smutfics that go out of their way to show that the relationship is consensual and that everyone agrees several times about the fucking before the actual fucking.

I get where that came from and god knows that fandom is still plenty iffy in the consent department but overdoing it the other way around doesn't really improve things.

I have written that super-consensual fic. Specifically because I was horrified by fic where the man/dominant partner flies into a jealous rage, restrains and/or forces themselves on their partner in what is dubious consent at best, inclusive of a lot of "you are mine/you belong to me" talk, and it's hand-waved that this is an expression of deep, kinky and intense love - because he's so sorry but he did it because loves her soooo much and oooh he's so dark and broody before he takes it out on her but afterwards it's all better.

I don't like the persistent 1-2-3fingers-penis thing either (particularly if a couple is portrayed as having any kind of long-term relationship), but reading these 50 Shades-style fics made me feel like people were actively propagating dangerous lies. "This is a healthy and desirable relationship! And heroin is good for you!"

Yes, it's only fic. But I feel like BDSM is one of those frontiers that people don't know very much about... so they make shit up.

I actually sort of agree. I've seen a lot of BDSM fics that are just very fluffy and tame. And someone of those manage to be hot despite that, but it's not necessarily what I'm expecting, especially if they make the tags sound kind of dramatic.

[personal profile] sarillia 2014-08-02 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Personally I want to see more of a sense of fun in BDSM fic. It's either all dark and atmospheric or it's fluffy and the BDSM is a reflection of the pure trust between the partners.

My limited experience involves a lot of giggling over how silly it felt that didn't take away from how hot it was.

[personal profile] jaybie_jarrett 2014-08-02 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm sense of fun? How do you mean?

Sorry I was just curious because it made me think of an OC I have who his a very snarky , sarcastic sub, who's likely to crack jokes when he gets flustered during the act. Or be like "you bastard/fuck you" when the dom messes around with him. Or depending on the dom, have some serious banter going on between them

I'm not sure whether readers would like that or find it annoying or a turn off.

Ya know, I just realized that, while I've read plenty of original erotica that featured BDSM, I've never read any fanfiction that featured it. I guess I've just never shipped any characters that seemed like they would be into it...?

In any case, that whole "BDSM is the only way to have a loving relationship" thing is...really strange. Comes across as pretty self-conscious. Is this something that you've encountered in one specific fandom, or does it actually show up in multiple fandoms?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-02 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Weird. I've never really read BDSM fic because it really doesn't float my boat, but from what I've observed across fandoms there seems to be a huge variety in how its written. Plus, I've always kind of wished I was into it because there seem to be a huge amount of novel length intense BDSM AUs out there. The Sentinel, for one, seems to have looooots. And I've seen quite a few in SG1 and SGA as well. And I'm fairly sure there are a few in old(er) school fandoms like Ster Trek TOS and Starsky and Hutch. Plus, in general I've found that, unless it's signposted as an 'issue', a lot of old school fic doesn't really bother itself with PC nonsense (in the sense that it has no place in a porny fic), because that's how old school bitches rolled.

I guess what I've trying to say is that it might be worth it to try again, maybe in a different fandom if the common trope isn't what you like in your main fandom?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-02 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
So much agreement. I don't even read fanfic when I want to get my rocks off any more. Original BDSM fic, stuff that is straight-up written by perverts, for perverts, with the intent of indulging our perversions, that's what does it.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-02 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh fuck that noise. There's other ways to have a caring, loving relationship besides BDSM.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-02 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh OP, I get it, I'm also into BDSM and avoid fics like plague.

Though, usually for the opposite reason - I find very unhealthy and unsafe ones in my fandoms. I only trust people whom I know in RL to write them well.

As for the preachy part - that. is. the. worst. It happened to me with a friend who's in a D/s relationship (pretty unhealthy and he's a psychologist who doesn't see it - Master loves to push triggery scenarios onto him for the reason of "overcoming traumas" - while it is a good thing, these scenarios .... are not .... ). He projects it onto everything.

"the only caring relationship" ?? Really? REALLY?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-02 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
...all these kids saying this clueless stuff are going to be horribly when they grow up, and start getting involved in actual relationships, aren't they? D-:

The cliche I loathe is "everyone who is into s/m is also into d/s", and the only reason a masochist isn't is because they've never found the right dom and it's like fuck off, no.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-03 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, it's the preachy tone that gets to me.

I admit I am not into BDSM even as fantasy material: in fact, I love slash precisely because it bypasses the inherent power imbalance of het relationships, so BDSM, a/b/o stuff and all other tropes that restore/accentuate/replace that power imbalance are not my cup of tea, but there is so much of it nowadays since BDSM has become trendy(*), that of course I have read my share of all of these.

And the part I really cannot stand is exactly the proselytizing you describe that so often accompanies such fics: but the seeming urge to convert everyone to their worldview is creepy and truly off-putting, much more so than the BDSM itself.

Sexual kinks of any type are fine by me if no one gets hurts, but lecturing and amateurish attempts at brain-washing are just not OK in my book.

Note:
(*) I can't even blame the success of Fifty Shades since it's an effect, not the cause for the growing popularity of the BDSM trope in fanfiction over the past few years.
