lmao there are people who headcanon angelina jolie and brad pitt's little 7 or 8 year old daughter as trans

(Anonymous) 2014-08-02 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Is that a headcaon though, or is it hey that kid looks like they might come to identify as trans. 7 or 8 year old trans kids exist. Many people will only accept you as trans if you were showing it at that age.

The kid is a girl who has a short haircut and likes dinosaurs over barbies. That's about all "evidence" there is. I mean, obviously it's a possibility. But it's sort of sad a girl can't be even mildly non-stereotypical without people screaming she's not really a girl.

I...wait. Really? If that's what's going on, that's not just sad -- that's frighteningly retrograde.

As much as I want to like that there's so much discussion and questioning of gender these days, I feel like half of the people involved are completely missing the point.

That was an article I read...maybe a year ago. So, maybe there's other stuff by now, but it was literally a newspaper being "alarmed" about Jolie-Pitt dressing the kid up as a boy and letting her play with dinosaur toys. Hey, how about that's what the kid wants? How about we let the kid tell us herself when she's a bit older?

[personal profile] a_potato 2014-08-02 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh. That...strikes me as being really odd. And worrisome.

The article itself was sort of disturbing.

There were a lot of tabloid articles about how Jolie was warping her children because this particular one wanted to be called John and Jolie/Pitt were fine with that. This was a couple of years ago though.
a_potato: (Default)

[personal profile] a_potato 2014-08-02 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
That changes my reading of the situation a little.

Fucked up on the part of the tabloids, though.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-02 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
From what I hear, the kid wanted to be called John because she likes the character from Peter Pan, so it doesn't change much. I'm sure there were tons of 90s kids who wanted to be called Mulan.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-02 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
There isn't so much discussion or questioning of gender these days, maybe try living in the real world.
a_potato: (Default)

[personal profile] a_potato 2014-08-02 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
And what world, exactly, do you think I'm living in?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-02 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but is it a headcanon. And let me tell you trans people get accused of gender essentialism way more often than anyone "screaming" that embracing boyish stuff might mean a child is a boy. "Oh you're not a man/woman just because you like baking/cars/growing your hair/sports/pink/women/men!!! why not just be a tomboy/gay/...?" I don't know if I should get more sad or angry when people pretend that shit isn't how over 90% of fucking everyone responds to trans people. It's like christians claiming persecution when someone wishes them happy holidays.
kallanda_lee: (Default)

[personal profile] kallanda_lee 2014-08-02 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, then I still think it's sort of creepy people "headcanon" real people, especially children, and especially if they then end up posting about it on the internet, where the kid might read about it in 10 years time when they Google themselves.

I'm also in the Glee fandom (yeah, I know) and for example I find it really creepy there are people dedicated to looking for hints that Darren and Chris are dating (op to the point of tracking their locations).

I absolutely understand wanting someone to rel.ate to that is a celebrity, but it still rubs me the wrong way

(Anonymous) 2014-08-02 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
It really depends on where you are. Fandom spaces? Incredibly obsessed with "tomboys must be trans". Real world? Obsessed with "it's just a tomboy phase, you're not trans". Both are equally stupid and shitty.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-02 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
real life trans people, especially kids, not getting the help they need because people like to pretend they don't exist is probably more shitty.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-02 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
People running around pretending to be trans and outright attacking actual trans people, behaving like total assholes and giving real trans people a bad name, resulting in even less people taking their issues seriously and dismissing them is equally shitty, in my opinion.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-02 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
That's not a real issue that exists. Accusing "fake trans people" (kids trying to figure out their identity on tumblr) of making it worse for all of us is just a way of trying to delude yourself into thinking mainstream society isn't disgusted by you for what you are. Show me one doctor who refused someone HRT because of a 13 year old with a blog.

If people are convinced trans people aren't real because of a teenage girl on Tumblr, they didn't believe it in the first place.

who "pretends" to be trans though?

honestly if somebody using weird pronouns or whatever makes certain people genuinely not want to support transgenderism or not take it seriously then the issue is with those certain people. call it bizarre or annoying or a phase - stuff like that is a nonissue. kids doing shit like this didnt cause my coworker to go on a rant about god giving me the right body and me needing to accept it. transphobia isnt ever caused by "fake trans people." people who get that worked up over it were already transphobic to begin with, dont let them fool you into blaming trans people for their own hate.

The problem is that it's also sort of dickish to assume someone needs help, especially if it's a celeb you only know about through the filter of media.

In Shiloh's case, hypothetically:

Maybe the kid IS trans, the parents know, but are just not telling them media because that's how they protect their child.

Maybe the kid will grow up to be a butch lesbian, but she's not at the point where romantic attraction's even an issue..

Maybe the kid is a straight girl who dislikes dresses and dolls, and likes dinosaurs.

Maybe in ANY of those 3 cases the kid is not really old enough to care.

The point is

a) Maybe the kid is getting help, it's just not spewed all over the press

b) Maybe the kid doesn't need help because it's not (yet) an issue. SOME kids will come out as trans at age 5, but certainly not all of them. I know someone who didn't realize she wanted to transition until her late 40's.

c) And yeah, maybe the kid is trans and could do with help, but then it's still not the internet's duty to analyze that.

d) And there's a myriad of other options not even mentioned here.

The fact is, no-one knows (except maybe the family) but in the mean time this child, who hasn't even chosen to be in the spotlight, has their pics analyzed by the fans and by paparazzi which is sort of gross.

And I'm not talking about simple headcanons, but about people who actually choose to write about this, sometimes for a professional medium.

I get that having positive role models makes it easier for non-famous trans people to get help, and that it really sucks when they don't, but bombarding a celeb's child as your role model, when you haven't so much as met them real life, is sort of shitty, too.

Was the professional article really in support of that kid being trans, or was it just moral panic about a girl being messed up by her parents giving her boy toys. Because that happens a lot. See also: don't paint your baby's nursery pink, it'll make him gay.

Heh, that's how my sister responded when I came out to her as trans, "why not just be a tomboy?" My answer? "I tried that for 25 years and it didn't work."

And someone else tried to convince me that I'm maybe not really a guy based on my love of poetry and the fact that I'm a good cook.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-02 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
But. But most celebrity chefs are men. And all those male poets.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-02 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I immediately thought of this. For the most part, it's been that kid.
