Appropriately, the one on the top right is probably from Dr. Who. (I'm assuming because of the telephone box.) It's a good bet the others are from the same show--maybe one's a former Doctor, since they say he "stayed way too long."

I don't see why you would even have to love them both. If someone you know ends up being some serial rapist/murderer, you are entirely justified to hate them.

I hear ya. The internet recently discovered my favorite book and all it is are endless longing looks between the stuffy upperclass man and the insecure black nerd-guy. Either that or just skipping the longing glances and going straight to the fucking. Despite both of them in canon having het sexual interests (former with the maid, and the latter with a different girl each book). In a set of books with limitless potential for adventures, the nascent fandom never gets out the bedroom. Or occasionally the lounge.

I don't know though.

Liking one kid better I can understand. But I always think of favoritism as treating kids differently (and not just because one is better behaved than the other or something). And when kids are growing up, it can really fuck them up to realize this.

I'm kind of touchy on this subject though. My mother never played favorites but my dad sure as hell did.

I was his favorite.

Too quick. Case is getting as trigger happy as a white cop in a black neighborhood.

What a great photo!

i think on some level it's hard for parents to outright HATE the person they raised from birth. they can strongly dislike, disown, and get away from them if they turn out evil but on some level that parental love will always be there. it can be outweighed and hate can exist at the same time, but SOME connection to the kid they once were isn't going to go away very easily. so yeah, they might love them, and never excuse their actions or approve or try to justify anything (including the deserved hatred that person is getting)

Mickey, I don't understand why they hate Mickey. Dude was awesome. I kind of think it's probably because they thought he was in the way of Rose/Ten (or Nine). pff *eye-roll*

I thought this was pretty common in writing.
Throwing in short, sometimes vague, quick placeholders so you don't interrupt your flow.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-27 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
As adults, I agree somewhat.

But as kids, I do think parents should love them. Because if you kill or rape someone as a kid, that indicates either a complete failure to parent properly or a deep psychological issue that the kid was likely born with.

This is show I feel about the interviews. Side stories of other eras written as books or made into movies I'm cool with. Interviews that give every little detail, are often contradictory, and are separated from the world and the surrounding scenes of the books bore me, though. I don't begrudge anyone liking them, but to me they don't count as canon and I don't even read them anymore for the most part. The books are the books. I love immersing myself in the whole world. Random factoids don't do it for me.

I also don't want any more books that are set post-Harry's Hogwarts years. Harry's story is done. But books fleshing out the world with the stories of different characters sound awesome to me.

I came here to say this.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-27 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Funny, my first thought was that I would end up as the main character in "Time Enough at Last."

...so I keep every pair of old glasses, ever...

I'm not sure why this is a secret. Sounds like standard editing procedure.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-27 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
They are all companions from Doctor who. The "stayed too long" one is named Jamie.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-27 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Mel and Nyssa, yes, Peri, no no no no no no no nooooooooooooo.

/no comment on the Nu!Who characters

That's how writing's done, OP.

What's made you think you're doing it wrong?

I believe those are all former companions of the Doctor. Martha hate makes me sad cheese. I also love K9.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-27 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Who hates K-9?! He is awesome.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-27 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Some parents kill their children. And some kill themselves just to get away from their children.

I don't think that parental love is a requirement just because one finds themself in a state of parenthood.

Yeah. I'm like that with Star Trek. I think that as much as the poor storytelling is why I just can't get into the new movies. The Trek-verse closed with Data's death. After that it was done. TNG, DS9, Voyager, they all fleshed out the Trek-verse and used up all the stories.

Same with Stargate. When Atlantis crashed into San Francisco Bay, that completed the stories. There was nothing more to add to that paradigm, which is just one of the reasons SG:U sucked. The only string left hanging was the masquerade, which they refused to even pull for some reason. Not sure anyone in this day and age, with the internet and everyone haven seen Star Wars, can really take a "the world is not ready" masquerade seriously. Dude, we've been ready for decades, the world is not going to lose its shit over aliens or elves. Not anymore.

Mickey Mel Nyssa K9
Tegan Martha Gwen Clara

idk the ones they avoid but i think the girl is Dodo

Jamie didn't stay around half long enough imo he and the Doctor clinging was the bestest

(Anonymous) 2014-08-27 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I only recognize Martha, Mickey, Clara, K9. I think the dude in the Kilt is Jamie. I should get around to watching Classic Who but eh I don't have the drive or will to watch that many episodes.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-27 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I do this too, and for the same reason.
