Re: Are you a tea/coffee/chocolate snob?

Mmm, I noticed darker chocolate is less buttery smooth than the milk variety and almost never melts. (like M&M! :D )

That's my favorite too! I still appreciate early 90s though.

As far as I remember (but it's been a while since I've read the book and I lost my copy ages ago, so I may be wrong), Shadow's mother is never explicitly described, though there are implications that she is black (someone else mentioned sickle-cell anemia on this thread). That, or she is vaguely described in a similar way to Shadow (as in not white, but we don't really know what she actually is or may be).

Shadow knows who/what his mother is, but doesn't know what his father is, and more importantly he's trying to just not respond to the prison guard, anyway. He doesn't quite know what he is because he doesn't know who his father is, but what he does know (his mother), he doesn't care to tell.

Re: How often do you shampoo/condition your hair?

[personal profile] kallanda_lee 2014-08-29 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
That really depends on the season.

Heart of summer, with a lot of sweating? Every day.

More temperate season? About every 4 days, sometimes even longer if I slap on some dry shampoo. I rarely condition because I feel it makes my hair heavier and more likely to get greasy.

I used to wash/condition my hair everyday, maybe every other day on rare occasion. But, lately my hair has been super dry, so I started only washing it every other day. Now I'm only washing every three days or four days. I don't even get it wet unless I'm going to wash it.

Can you ID these caterpillars?

This one is kind of blurry, but captures the fuzziness

This one is crisp, but you can't really make out how fuzzy it is. Also it has a cobweb stuck to it
http://i57.tinypic.com/28srd50.jpg

And this one, again in picture looks nothing like the other two, should maybe come with a warning for graphic-ness? It's topped over on it's side, and being swarmed by...tiny ants? Itty bitty spiders? They just look like specs in the photo.

I appreciate any help y'all can give, othewise I'm going to be paranoid it's some invasive thing out to kill everything, myself included. (There were at least five inching their way around my building's garages/driveway.)

Ugh, the David Tutera situation is disgusting and I can't believe how selfish and petty he and his ex-husband are acting. Completely forgot about it until you mentioned something.

It's Season 6, episode 1, "Blind Spot".

Every three days or so, as recommended by the woman who cuts my hair.

I used to shampoo and condition everyday, but then I stretched it out to every other day. Now I flip flop between every day and every other day, but I'm trying to stretch it back out again.

Re: What is something you enjoyed doing, but no longer do?

Exactly. Because depression definitely limits my activities these days.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Never read it but there have been plenty of times other people were surprised by the ethnicity of characters in class and most of the time, it's either due to some lackadaisical reading or tendency to read characters as white. I remember being flummoxed by those people who thought Rue from Hunger Games was white when the author specified that her skin was dark and/or brown.

omfg

senpai called ME senpai

(...you know how when you start using a word ironically, you put yourself on a slippery slope to using it for real? Yeah. Ugh. But I'm very happy right now.)

That is all.

I don't get it wet if I'm not washing it either, just because it's so annoying to dry it. Drying my hair is the only time I sometimes get the urge to chop it all off. None of the other things that annoy people with long hair (or who used to have it) bother me.

Re: How do you define passive aggressive?

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2014-08-29 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
So where would "correcting someone a lot" fall into that? Because my boss does that with me and I've done that with other people, but my boss seems very nice about it and I know I mean well when I do that with other people, but I've been called passive-aggressive and one of my friends said my boss sounds passive-aggressive. I've gotten the impression that correcting anyone on anything is somehow passive-aggressive, but that seems like overreacting/not quite right.

Ahh, right.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I've never read this book but when characters are referred to as dark skinned, I usually assume they're black. But I also wouldn't say that a coffee and milk type of complexion is dark.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
So are you a kouhai or senpai now?

Re: How often do you shampoo/condition your hair?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Usually every 2-3 days for me, but on rare occasion I've gone four. Anything beyond that and my hair is way too greasy to be seen in public but if I'm sick or something and don't plan on leaving the house I'll go longer.

Steven, Jenny and poor, tragic Florinda.

Seriously though a quick google search for "black caterpillar with white hairs" brings up a walnut caterpillar? maybe?

Haha, no. There were a few that I wouldn't have minded that though...

Re: Just finished watching The Celluloid Closet

[personal profile] kallanda_lee 2014-08-29 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
I saw it years ago, when still in film school - not part of an assignment, but just because I saw it at my library's film section and thought it might be interesting - and it was. I found it really interesting, especially as I just knew less about lgbt issues and censorship back then.

What I find really interesting is that we can't really see those movies as the people back then did - because we have a different cultural context - i.e. something might look terribly gay to us while it wasn't back then, and we in turn might miss subtext those audiences might have picked up on.

A lot of the tropes still remain in fiction today, though, albeit updated, and there still seems to be a reluctance for gay leads if the story is not particularly about sexuality.

So many things, tbh.

Used to love drawing (did it constantly during school, came home and did some more), but eventually stopped. By the time I picked up a pencil again it felt like I had backslide about 3 years and didn't feel like making the effort to gain my skills back. (Not that I was incredible in the first place, but I could've been worse?) I miss it sometimes, but am lazy.

Weirdly enough, basketball. I don't have a lot of interest in sports, but I did casually enjoy playing basketball in my free time. We had a goal outside the house so I spent time outside shooting hoops with my brother. At some point I stopped doing it and started reading and gaming more.

Now it's extremely rare for me to pick up an actual book; I read fanfiction instead. Back in high school I would sometimes read five books a week.

I've barely gamed in months, but it isn't because of lack of interest; I just don't have as much free time now, and when I do I'm usually reading or watching tv or anime.

There are probably more...
