Best Character Chemistry
(Anonymous) 2014-08-30 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)Putting aside their eventual romantic relationship, I have to say that seeing two characters (and actors) with such amazing chemistry is like catching lightning in a bottle. What are your favorite chemistry sets in fandom?
(Doesn't have to be romantic, btw: another example of incredible chemistry IMO is Veronica and Keith Mars.)
Re: Best Character Chemistry
(Anonymous) 2014-08-30 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)Starsky and Hutch (obvious answer durr). About 2/3rds of the show's and the friendship's depth is directly attributable to Paul Michael Glaser and David Soul's acting and chemistry.
Going way back...Lucy and Ethel in I Love Lucy. Lucy and Ethel's relationship dynamics always felt just as prominent and hilarious and Lucy and Ricky's.

Arthur, Merlin, Morgana and Gwen, especially on the first season of Merlin. That series was kind of nonsensical for a lot of it, but I basically watched most of it if only because those actors had crazy amounts of chemistry with each other. (but lol continuity... and then Morgana turned cackling evil... and then... oh, I won't go into it)

(Anonymous) 2014-08-30 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)Whether it's romantic or not (although it's clear to me why they're the granddaddies of slash) their chemistry is amazing.
Heck, Kirk, Spock, AND McCoy together are always great.

For romantic, Roseanne and Dan from Roseanne.

Re: Best Character Chemistry
Other good examples... the whole cast of West Wing really. Sam and Dana from Sports Night (which is not especially surprising). Lisa and Dave from Newsradio. A bunch of others too probably that I'm forgetting.

Re: Best Character Chemistry
Sheppard and McKay from SGA were incredible together, and so were Kirk and Spock (and McCoy) from Star Trek: TOS. Peter and Nathan's (Heroes) relationship is very...intense, maybe not in the way it should have been, but it was definitely interesting and the actors had great chemistry. Other than that...Xena and Gabrielle (for obvious reasons), Scott and Stiles from TW (Posey and Dylan are just adorable together; no acting required), and Raylan and Boyd (Justified) should always be in the same scenes together. Also Rachel and Tim, though those two usually are.
Oh! House and Wilson, too. The show wasn't consistently good (in later seasons), but Hugh and RSL were always great fun and acted their hearts out.
And because you mention familial relationships, I think of Kurt and Burt from Glee. The show might have been a mess, but they got that relationship right. (Same with Teen Wolf and Stiles and Sheriff Stilinski. Melissa and Scott are great too. <3)
Last but not least, anything with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. They always have the best friendships in films, but I also ship the hell out of them in everything as well.

I never saw much of Donna's run on Doctor Who but what I have seen their scenes and chemistry were amazing and I enjoyed it a lot.
As silly as Teen Wolf is there are a few relationships where I think the characters just click: Scott and Stiles, Stiles and Sheriff Stilinski, and Scott and Melissa McCall.
Oh and when I was still watching Glee I loved Kurt and Burt's relationship.
As for romantic chemistry, Rick and Evie from The Mummy.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-30 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)Aramis & Porthos in the new Musketeers. I have never shipped them so strongly as I do in this incarnation, but even just viewed as brothers-in-arms they are something else.
Slightly odd one, but I honestly think that McCoy and Khan had more chemistry in that one scene in 'Space Seed' than McCoy got with anybody outside of Spock & Kirk. The whole threat/defiance/anger/respect thing they had going between Khan's hand going around McCoy's throat and Khan surrendering the scalpel to him was intense for something that took, what, less than two minutes to happen?
Ivan/Victoria from RED. Two cheerfully sociopathic old monsters who've loved each other since one of them shot the other in the chest for their country and didn't kill them. I have never been so invested in an onscreen het romance as I was for those two.
The Ritchie versions of Holmes and Watson. Say whatever else you want about them, but they had chemistry out the wazoo, and the dance scene in the second movie and the moment of eye-contact just before the falls were phenomenal (not necessarily even romantically, but just that second where Watson realises what Holmes is going to do, and Holmes almost looks apologetic for the split-second, and then he's gone, and Watson visibly just stops being able to think).
The entire casts of the first two Mummy movies. They are my go-to happy place for bantering adventure, cheerful peril and a side of romance. Jonathan & Evie as siblings, Evie/Rick as romance, Rick & Ardeth as compelling fire-forged respect ... all the love.

I also think the characters in Princess Tutu in general all work wonderfully together, but special props to Fakir and Duck (or Ahiru, if you prefer). Particularly since they take the common shoujo romance trope of "spunky girl and grumpy/broody guy" and actually have it play out in a way that feels...I don't know, more real? Like, you would actually know these people and they're more than just silly anime stereotypes?
Also Sarah and her (adoptive) mom in Orphan Black have a really interesting relationship with each other, I think. Actually, their entire family unit is great. (note: I've only seen the first season so far.)

Kurt and Blaine from Glee. I loved their playful relationship, it was so cute util the writers ruined it. ¬¬
