1. There is no plot.
2. Everyone does their own thing, in their own cliques, without bothering to interact with anyone outside their clique.
3. Newbies are almost always unwelcomed, especially if they're from an obscure fandom.
4. They let OOC people in. (Dear god, what kind of moron would make Grimmjow fall in love with MOMOKO?)
5. The mods never call them on the OOCness. Even when people complain.
6. The mods take FOREVER to reply to ANYTHING. (Three weeks, lmao.)

(Anonymous) 2007-12-10 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought newbies could get into poly and the basic flow of things if they talked to the other muns outside the RP more. They didn't really have to be in the cliques, they just had to have the guts to speak to strangers and actively suggest plots.

Of course, I understand how difficult this can be.

[identity profile] infringe.livejournal.com 2007-12-10 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but when they do suggest plots, they often get overshadowed by the more infamous members &their plots. Also, considering the size of the game, it can be a little intimidating to someone who's new &doesn't know anyone. D:

1. Is this new? There is some plot /now/ unlike the times when the old mods. Nothing ever happened then. There was one big plotline in April-May to be specific and there will be another very soon.
2. There are subplots people can join willingly, unlike the old mods times when everyone did their thing in their personal cliques. There are far less cliques.
3. Never had this experience.
4. OOCness happens in every game I've played in. The Grimmjow's case, I agree, was very odd (Ran too), but both were resetted/dropped.
5. http://berryfloss.livejournal.com/6542.html
6. They always answer everything I ask almost asap.

1. Read my answer a little below this one.

6. No, I wasn't in the beginning. A friend of mine did become a mod eventually, but I had good contact and quick responses before this. In most games, in fact, I contact the mods after I join.

Old mods sucked in getting back to people, in my opinion. Only /one/ of them was actually looking at the mails, reading suggestions and the others never bothered for messages sent weeks ago. Several of those were mine or some people I knew. There was d0rama due to this conflict of mod permission.

[identity profile] burnsaway.livejournal.com 2007-12-10 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I apologize if you've known people who did not receive answers, in that case. However, I would like to take the time to point out how... odd I find that. I myself have never denied or ignored anyone who came to me with a question or concern.

Do you know, were they IMs or e-mails?

1. Oh yes. Eight months ago is a clear sign that there is plot!
2. Cliques are everywhere in that comm. Just look at the posts with the most comments. You'll see what I mean.

(Anonymous) 2007-12-10 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
1. Poly NEVER had a plot. 'Tis be the trouble.

The new mods are slowly trying to fix this problem that was handed to them since origin by trying to incorprate plot elements (like a justice system, a currency, plot-focused activities and that tentative plot a while ago) and having people vote if they like or not (don't see the point why OP says they are elitists when it's pretty democratic process).

I'd love a more focused plot. I have been a storyteller and mod a lot of multifandom games, my passion are the plot-creations. However, I also know Poly's nature and players didn't join the game because of "the plot." The mods are trying their best to fix this issue that was given to them by the old batch. I understand why they hesitate. When they proposed a curse-subplot that last some days (i.e. witch hunting), people often complain it's "too long."

2. Some degrees of cliques exist in every rp comm. But they are less grossly obvious than before: Gundam Seed clique, Air Gear clique, D. Gray Man clique, etc. And their inter-mixing because they had the same players and group of friends. I remember them. I don't say there aren't, but there are far less than before. Also, now there is actual chance of have action/drama subplots if a crew/character proposes it... This never happened with the old mods; those subplots can last weeks and do make up for the lack of general plot as my personal opinion. That lack of general plot should be corrected soon as people demanded to have a plot like in April in a recent survey.

That made me happy.

(Anonymous) 2007-12-11 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
1. Oh, it had a plot from the beginning. The whole end of the world background, with the clock underground actually had a function back then. There were countdowns and whatnot. I haven't seen it mentioned much in Poly now, if at all.

Almost all the City's rules (like how the City Dead cannot return to their own world) have no longer been touched on, but I suppose that is the fault of players for failing to read the FAQ.

But that aside, Poly is not as democratic as one would think. The wrath of players who are mod fanboys and girls is brought down upon anyone who brings up anything less than adulation. Of course, by the strict definition of democracy, majority rules, so your statement is valid, in that respect.

But mods are not infallible, and games are not perfect. So if someone has a suggestion that could improve the game somehow, but is afraid to even say anything out of fear of the majority, how is that fun?

Furthermore, the mods are kind of inefficient. In the beginning, there was ONE mod. Count 'em-- one. And that person got more accomplished than all four of them combined, and never complained, or asked for any form of praise for what they were doing. Does that make them Super-mod? Probably not. Granted, this was eventually extended to 4 mods, but that only increased efficiency.

They were also easier to reach, and more accommodating to players who had special requests.

I'm sure outside of the game, the present mods are all lovely, wonderful people. In fact, I don't doubt it. But just because a person is good doesn't always mean they're the best person for a job. So, if they can't handle the responsibilities that come along with being a mod, for any reason at all, they should simply hand it over to people who can.

I agree. That was terrible.

1. There is a plot, it revolves around the end of the world, whatever characters do to make it. You, the player, can create plots.
2. This is true in it's own way, considering characters from obscure fandoms are overlooked and sometimes the more popular characters get interaction. That's the only thing that ever bugs me.
3. Not really :/. If newbies don't take the iniatve, then they'll be ignored. It's a big game, and it's hard to keep track of new people unless they jump right in.
4. I think they cracked down on this back in MARCH, and that Grimmjow has been long since LONG GONE.
5. They have suspended and pulled people aside from it. Just because they don't make public posts about it doesn't mean they DON'T. And I respect that, it keeps drama from boiling over.
6. Well, you KNOW, believe it or not, mods have LIVES. And the longest I've seen them take IS three weeks, because they've asked for numerous re-writes of applications, not full out rejection. The longest it usually takes a week and a half.

[identity profile] gaulish.livejournal.com 2007-12-10 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
So you don't think you're being just a TAD too critical for this? I moderate a game too, granted, the longest I've approved an app was a week, but think of amount of applications and players. That doesn't mean a thing?

And she's being gracious about it.

I couldn't agree with you more. I TRIED joining a while back and experienced 2 & 3 personally. (Despite the fact that more than a few people said they recognized my obscure fandom!)

The sad thing is, I keep being tempted to reapply there. Because there are some really awesome players I'd love to interact with that seem to shun any other game but Poly. (I even saw one person from there leave another game because of the mods were bad LOL)

[identity profile] jamiefawkes.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
I hope you do try joining again~! The sure-fire way to get people interested in your character/fandom is to tell them about it~!

When I joined, I'd never really heard about Berserk, but after talking to the mun of the main character, he gave me a lot of information about it and gave me links to where I could watch the anime/read the manga and now I love it. ♥

I'm fairly new to Poly [I've only been there for a couple weeks~], and I fit in quite quickly. You just have to be ready to jump right in and interact with other characters you'd usually never talk to; people are very accepting at Poly. My two boys have made a lot of outer-fandom friends just because I felt the need to have them reply on random entries. :3 ♥ And honestly, I don't even know some of the characters/series!!;;

It can be a lot of fun if you do your share to get your fandom out there so other people can enjoy your character as much as you do. :3 It'd be a shame for you to miss out~! I've gotten a few people in Poly liking Gintama, simply by interacting with them and giving out a crunchyroll.com link~ ♥

P.S: If you ever do join, at least know that the D.Gray-Man and Gintama characters will welcome anyone warmly~! ♥

[identity profile] haleysings.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
I completely disagree with #3. I play a minor character (only shows up for about 5 or six episodes) from an obscure fandom (Princess Tutu), and he regularly gets 100+ comments on his entries. I don't play more popular characters (I played Maya Fey for, oh, a month or so a while back, but I sucked at her so I dropped), so it can't be "Oh, well, it's because you're well known for playing so-and-so"

I DO have a friend who plays a popular character (Vash) who constantly gets a huge, massive amount of comments to his posts, but...this is not only because he's a popular character, but since he's an outgoing character he ALSO comments on a ton of other people's entries AND the mun herself is really friendly and gets along well with others in the RP.

I think any character can succeed in Poly as long as you (1) post often enough that people notice your character, (2) are IC enough that people aren't too annoyed with you to play with you, (3) make a point of commenting on other character's entries [PARTICULARLY if your character is supposed to be outgoing!] and (4)you don't cause OOC wank.

Honestly, I've seen far, far, FAR worse RPs than Poly, and while I do wish they had a bit of a more all-encompassing plot at Poly, it's one of my few complaints. Maybe I'm just "blind" to it's flaws, I don't know.
