How so? /Not sarcastic

(Anonymous) 2014-09-07 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
He protected a kid he hated and risked his life as a double-agent for Dumbledore while everyone hated him. It was a thankless job and he didn't even get any credit for it.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-07 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah but how much of a hero you are is not really how much effort you put into it.

It isn't really a competition either but whatever.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-07 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
so, what, James only decided to sacrifice his life to protect his family because he thought he'd get credit for it?

(Anonymous) 2014-09-07 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously. I love how James being a bit of a jerk as a kid means he was more evil than Snape. James grew up.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-07 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Protecting someone you hate is far more difficult than protecting a family member.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-07 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
But he didn't do it for Harry, he did it for Lily. He was still doing it for someone he loved, and he might have set Harry on fire if it would have gotten him Lily back.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-07 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
nayrt, but why does it matter who he did it for? The fact is that he did it. I've seen this point come up in other fandoms, as a roundabout way of disparaging a character because their motives aren't pure enough. It just makes me wonder who is pure enough, and when is doing something good actually good enough.

tl;dr. I think that the ayrt's statement of "Protecting someone you hate is far more difficult than protecting a family member" is actually a valid point.

He hated the kid because Snape has the emotional maturity of a particularly unripe kumquat, and everyone hated him because he was an asshole. Oh, and it turns out he was trying to commit suicide by promotion (to DADA instructor) for basically the entire series. The fact that he did what Dumbledore told him to in spite of his personal feelings make him competent, not heroic. I'm just glad that he was competent at something, since he was a failure at teaching and at being a decent human being.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-07 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
And yet Harry called him the bravest man he ever knew and named his son after him. If Snape was merely competent I doubt Harry would feel that strongly.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-07 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Harry isn't exactly the brightest person though let's be honest.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-07 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Harry could have called Draco the bravest man he ever knew, it still wouldn't have made the text was Draco most decidedly wasn't any less a reality. Probably the author meant Snape to come across as worthy of that compliment before the end of the story, but the effort fell short for a lot of readers.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-07 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
FUCK YOU, YOU FUCKING SNAPE HATER!!!

But seriously, that's what you get from the books? Your perspective is screwed.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-07 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I think they're pretty bang on the money myself.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-08 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
Hey! I've known some very emotionally mature young kumquats.

I hate it when people are fruitist. *glowers*

(Anonymous) 2014-09-07 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
lol yeah, he did that only after revealing the prophecy to Voldemort in the first place, trying desperately to sell out Harry and James in exchange for Lily's safety (because she would TOTALLY be okay with having her beloved husband and newborn son murdered while she was living it up. And she TOTALLY wouldn't beat the shit out of Snape for even suggesting that.) and then only agreed to protect Harry after Dumbledore guilted the everloving fuck out of him. What a guy.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-07 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Funny how Harry after knowing all of this still considered Snape a good man .

(Anonymous) 2014-09-07 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
That's not the same as saying that he's better than James you wackadoodle

(Anonymous) 2014-09-07 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I wasn't responding to that part of the argument, Einstein.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-07 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
To be fair, Harry's taken a lot of blows to the head.

ayrt

...okay? That doesn't mean the reader has to think he's one.

Character A thinking that Character B is a good person is a very poor argument for Character B actually being a good person.

I'm not sure I agree with you.

If that's the only way you can think of to respond, then I'm just going to assume that you're trolling for Snape wank. And I approve of this, although I think you should step it up. Snape wank was always the most fun Harry Potter wank to me, even if it's also the most frustrating.

Harry just wanted peace. Of all people, Harry is the last person to carry a drama queen grudge endlessly (unlike, say, Snape).

And he never said a good man. He called Snape brave. I pretty much agree with Harry's take at the end. Guy was a flaming asshole but didn good and difficult things behind the scenes. Fascinating person but yes, he was a jerk. Let's move on.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-08 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
I love how Snape fans dismiss every opinion Harry ever had as worthless--EXCEPT when they're bringing up "Harry thought Snape was the bravest man."
