In the book, there is a certain society that keeps slaves, and the members of that society are trained and conditioned to not acknowledge the presence of the slaves, to the point where they no longer "see" them. Their minds simply do not register the presence of another person.

There is a rather powerful scene, where one of these society members meets the group of protagonists, and they describe his eyes as looking glazed over and faraway. The first and only thing he asks them is, "Do I see you?" and once he learns that they are on his societal level, he is able to acknowledge their existence.

It's not exactly the same for me, but that's where I learned the technique from.
