Mayim Bialik is a good example of how someone who's reached the Ph.D level of higher learning can still be an idiot. But I expect no less of her after all that anti-vax nonsense.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-22 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
She was anti-vax? I don't recall that.

I agree with that thought. A good education does not equal a lick of common sense.

Maybe she just didn't understand some of the plot.

Like from the part kid Elsa was making snowmen to pretty much the end.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-22 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I do not understand how that woman exists. The cognitive dissonance required for her to have her views just boggles me. That educated and anti-vax? Thinks Frozen is anti-feminist but works on BBT? Like that last one, whatever, I guess... it's a paying job, doesn't mean she agrees with everything presented... but jesus, she is just so goddamn WEIRD.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-22 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
She may have some sort of contract she can't get out of re: BBT, but if she doesn't, WHY would she stay on that show? The females are just written terribly.

It's "male bashing" because the prince is the villain? WTF? There was also a positive male character (Kristoff). So just having a male villain is anti-men now?

(Anonymous) 2014-09-22 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Since technically, the Weaseltown Posse and the Prince were villains but all the other men in the story were good or neutral, then yeah. Apparently any male villain = male-bashing in Mayim's world.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-22 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
In her defense of staying on TBBT, if you follow her enough you definitely pick up an undercurrent of unhappiness on her part with parts of the show, though she's been in show business long enough to know not to bash it while it's running. That fact is the circumstances make it essentially a dream job for her: it's a huge paycheck and health insurance for herself and the kids, and it allows her the kind of flexibility she wants so she can spend as much time as she can with her kids.

I seriously have no doubt that after TBBT ends we'll hear a lot of honesty from her about how she really felt about the show. But I'm in no place to judge a single mother who's devoted to her children.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-22 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Point 2 cancels out point 1

(Anonymous) 2014-09-22 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
They typically come from opposite sides of the court, but they're not contradictory.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-22 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Not surprised at all. I already lost my respect for her after the anti-vaccination thing. She seems like one of these people really convinced about their own superior intelligence while in actuality, she's pretty dumb.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-22 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
The fact that she thinks a kid's understanding of movies they watch amounts to 'pretty shapes moving around' makes me question her parenting abilities.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-23 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
See, I get doing something sucky for the paycheck, so I would't begrudge her staying on BBT even though the women are written terribly - but what I don't get is why she has to be so hypocritical about it. "Look at how slutty that Ariana Grande is looking in that billboard! I can't believe she'd dress like that just because sex sells and that's what people are looking for!" "Damn that Frozen for its cutesy female characters with the big eyes - how dare Disney continue drawing their female characters in the way that they have for years because it works!"

Maybe Disney and Ariana are just like you, Mayim - willing to sell out on the moral front in favor of a sweet paycheck.

All about marriage and finding a man? Did she even watch the movie?

Disney just can not win no matter what they do.

I'm sure the hearts of everyone who worked on the movie are totally broken by this as they roll around in their huge piles of money.

While I roll my eyes a bit at the people proclaiming that Frozen is an uber-feminist film, I think it's a bit ridiculous to say it's anti-feminist. Yes, marriage and love play a role in the film, but ultimately it is a story about the relationship of two sisters and how being forced to hide a part of yourself is never healthy. I mean [SPOILER ALERT] in the end it's not a romantic kiss that saves Anna; it's her love for her sister. While I don't think this makes it necessarily a feminist film, I do appreciate the fact that it acknowledges the familial love it just as important as romantic love.

Also, it's anti-man because the main villain is male? Please.

Number two, are you serious?

That being said I don't take anything Mayin Bialik says seriously because she's anti-vaxx ugh.

She's.... not actually a neuroscientist, you realize that, right guys? She got her PhD in neuroscience back in 2007 and left the field completely. She has literally no other publications in her field aside from her dissertation. She may have been an aspiring neuroscientist, at one point, but she's not one now - she's an actress who was educated in neuroscience and has been out of the discipline for the better part of a decade. Her education is brought up again and again because it plays into what she does during her actual career (as an actress) so well.

And because it came up last time: neuroscience isn't immunology. Vaccines = immunology. It's possible she has no background in immunology whatsoever, hence the blind ignorance about vaccination (though her political beliefs are just as appalling).

What really bothers me about this, other than her weird interpretation is the way she just speaks FOR her sons like that. I mean it's one thing to say "I won't let my kids watch this" but it's another to be like "my kids HATE this movie like me".

It just makes her sound like the kind of mom who thinks she owns her kids completely. When will people get that kids aren't a controlled extension of your own ego? They're individual people. Maybe I'm over-analyzing but, that just kinda comes off very "i'm going to force my kids to have the same feelings/view I do".
