That's what they are doing? I know season six was horrid but I was racking my brains trying to come up with some way Willow could be portrayed as a rapist. Now I know and the answer is silly.

Manipulating someone's memory to hold on to them is pretty damn skeevy. Add sex to that equation and the rape allegations aren't that hard to fathom.

Forgive me because its been a long time since I've seen the entirety of that season but didn't Willow memory tweak Tara on more then one occasion? One time in which it was after a fight so they wouldn't have to continue to fight? That would be taking away Tara's autonomy so I could see where the thought process of considering it an issue of rape since it's an imbalance of power.

It's been ages though so I could be remembering fic plots instead of actual canon; if so ignore all this.

I assume it's more that they then had sex when Tara would not have consented otherwise than wiping her mind specifically. Although given what had already happened to Tara that alone was a pretty horrific thing to do.

I think that because Tara couldn't remember the fight and then slept with Willow, Willow had raped her physically because Tara never would have slept with her if she did remember the fight.

I've always kind of side-eyed that logic, because those people are assuming couples never get into fights and still want to have sex (or have make up sex). What Willow did was super skeevy, but mostly because Willow was using magic to wipe the board clean instead of going through what normal couples do - talk about it, stress, maybe yell more, then make up. Because while they were fighting about some pretty major things, it's clear that Tara and Willow still were together and loved each other. It's only when Tara finds out about the memory spell that she decides that - despite loving Willow - she has to leave.

EDIT: I'm talking about the first time. Tabula Rasa erased everyone's memory, and I don't think Willow and Tara slept together then? My memory is not great.

She is guilty of getting consent through fraudulent means (basically, the sex scene during I'm under your spell. Tara doesn't remember she's angry with Willow, for something Willow did to her. It's the magical equivalent of a roofie), but I can see how that's not as bad as Warren's outright rape attempt and murder, and Spike's rape attempt.

Spike is a soulless vampire, and Warren is a sociopath. We don't expect better of them. We DO expect better of Willow. That's why the fans were so upset with her.

I am not doing this on this occasion. I'm sure you think the idea that willow raped tara is highly offensive, but it is an opinion I have had since I shotguned the series a few years back. I firmly believe that what willow did was rape.

She brainwashed the woman. Fucked with her mind and then continued to have a sexual relationship. she robbed her of the ability to consent. had willow a penis, this would not be a debate.

True, willow was a ground-breaking character, but this does not excuse this action. Shitty writing is an excuse, but that does not change the fact that it did happen.

It is really pissing me off that people are saying that Willow taking away Tara's ability to consent and having sex with her is not as bad as Warren or Spike. Just because it's not violent doesn't make it not rape. Any type of rape is bad.

She violated Tara's mind, and her free will, by willfully taking Tara's memory of their fight away during the fight. One minute Tara is telling Willow "Can we just not?", clearly angry and the next Willow pulls out her rape drug - Lethe's Bramble - says a word, and Tara crawls into bed all cuddly and affectionate, ready for some lovin'. What the hell is that if not rape?? It was also implied it happened more than once.

Tara herself compared what Willow did to her to what Glory did to her, and broke up with her because she was disgusted. Willow's answer to that, and to the realization that she caused Buffy horrible anguish by pulling her out of heaven, was to do another forgetting spell, and that went wrong too. Willow is a mind rapist, she takes people's free will and memories away because she thinks she knows what's best and because she's selfish and lazy. She's not a positive representation of a lesbian in a relationship. Tara was.

I really wish people would see the difference between rape and other violation. Rape is violating someone in a sexual way. Willow did violate Tara, and that was fucked up, but it wasn't sexual in nature. Still bad, but not rape.
