Looking for a Game like X

(Anonymous) 2014-09-27 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Thought of a decent subject line last minute, yay

So I thought it would be nice to have a thread about certain types of games that we are looking to play more of. Like someone says they want to play more games like Paper Mario and people give them their recommendations of things like that, or a kind of genre or thing about a game, like co-op, Diablo gameplay, shooters, etc. I'll put my own in one the comments, so I don't take up the sole focus of the thread.

Sims Medieval made me want to play a game like that, but without it being strictly goal oriented. So basically I would love a game like the Sims, but set in a particular setting, and where I would have more free range like the normal Sims games. Sims Medieval would be awesome if you could play a peasant.

Guild 2 is somewhat simmilar, but not as good imo.

I'm looking for FPS (or other) games with an Aliens-knockoff theme. In other words... well, you guys know Aliens, right? There's a lot of games that are just Aliens with the serial numbers filed off, like Alien Swarm and Natural Selection. Hell even Contra's last level is one big Alien hive complete with barely-disguised xenomorphs.

Basically I just want to blast some screaming giant death bugs. Gimme recs.

From what I've seen, haven't played it yet but looks fun, Interstellar Marines on steam looks like that, but instead of bugs you are fighting walking sharks. It is in Early Access though.

It's strategy, not FPS, but Infested Planet might be to your taste.

The Exctinction mode in the new CoD (Ghosts) is basically exactly that. Plus, (optional) online or offline co-op.

Now that you brought it up, what ARE other games like Paper Mario?

Anything else like Pokemon? Either where a big part of it is collecting things or with cute little creatures or something. I don't know, I'm not a gamer but I love Pokemon. If there's any kind of fighting it can't be real time because I'm a wimp and that stresses me out too much.

Re: Looking for a Game like X

(Anonymous) 2014-09-27 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Animal Crossing, maybe? You live in a town with a bunch of cute anthromorphic animals and can collect things for the local museum. The gameplay isn't similar, but it's slowpaced and very unstressful.

Well it isn't new, and you might have to emulate it, but Keitai Denju Telefang (referred to as Pokemon Diamond and Jade) is reminiscent of pokemon a bit, and there is a sorta English translation of it, since I've played a bit of it. JonTron talks about it in this video (if I get the address right it should start at the point he begins talking with it, but if it doesn't it starts at 7:57) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zJD9B0za9k#t=477

Boy do I have the game for you! It's called Ni no Kuni. Animated by Studio Ghibli, in fact. It's more plot centric than Pokemon but pretty much involves exploring and running around "capturing" and raising monsters.

I haven't played it, but I've heard secondhand about a Pokemon-esque game called Fossil Fighters. It might be worth looking up.

Dragon Quest Monsters Joker. Not so big on "cute" and "little" but some of the later dragons are just gorgeous.

It's turned based like Pokemon. You collect monsters. Main difference is that rather than catching and leveling/evolving and breeding copies of the ones you have, you evolve by combining two monsters into one. And most of the rarest, strongest monsters you can only get by planning out like 5 different evolution chains in advance. I think I got, like, the second strongest dragon in the game before I realized I was just grinding to grind.

It's a pretty short game, but still fun. Highly recommend it.

They've also made a sequel since then, so you might want to check that one out instead. Or both. Or whatever.

I like to call the Shin Megami Tensei series 'Pokedemon', because it does have the same 'gotta catch 'em all' aspect to it. The combat is turn-based (depending on the sub-series, the exact nature differs, but it's always some form of turn-based).

The demons certainly aren't all cute (they range from cute, to creepy, to frigging weird, in various proportions, depending on the subseries, again), but a big part of the gameplay is collecting them (how they're collected changes, again, by subseries).

spectrobes! it's a ds game where you go on different planets and collect and revive fossils of monsters to help you fight other monsters. you can make them level up and evolve, a bit like pokémon.

So reason I made this thread was because I wanted to ask if anyone knew what the Spore space stage gameplay was based off, because that was my favorite part of Spore. I guess what I'm really looking for are games where combat isn't a main priority, where exploration and looking at planets/going down to them and meeting other civilizations are big parts. Being in space is nice but anything that meets that would be appreciated as well.

Okami, and Kingdom Hearts. In other words, RPGs that have a lot of easter eggs and side missions and just a whole lot of world to explore, that's light on the fighting, and when there is fighting, NO FUCKING GUNS because I can't aim for shit. And no turn-based combat either, it drives me nuts (which is why I could never work with the Final Fantasy I've tried).

It's a plus for the game to be easy on the eyes as well. :D

Ghost Trick? Something with a lot of plot twists, silly, likeable characters, and also a fun gameplay gimmick.

I'm going to ask about board games, even though I know you're talking more about video games.

I recently played Eldritch Horror and I was really impressed by the complexity but also by how much fun it was (and pretty, too!), though I'll admit the fact that the game will kill you more often than not is a bit frustrating after a while.

So I wonder if any of you can rec similar games? Specifically I'm attracted to the fact that it's a fully cooperative game, which seems to be a rarity (most have somebody playing a traitor). A slightly shorter game would actually be appreciated, since my family doesn't often have 5 hours in a row to spend on board games...

I would enjoy an Outlast-Viscera Cleanup Detail-Sims build mode hybrid where I could clean up that entire map, then restore everything to its original condition. It would take about ten years to finish, but by god, I'd be the one to do it.

I'm looking for a game like Knights of the Old Republic.

An RPG where you can create a character, and there's a big sandbox world to play around in, and it's got a good story.

I'd love to play more games like Journey, with a focus on world exploration, story and atmosphere. But not like ICO, which I bought because people told me it was similar to Journey, and couldn't stand (thanks largely due to the clunky combat, which made the game too tense and frustrating).
