And what has Lana Parrilla done to make you feel this way?

What did Lana ever do? She's really nice and sweet.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-02 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate to use the word, especially since I know it's thrown around a lot, but Lana has said a lot of problematic things regarding her character, to the point where it's honestly hard to tell if she realizes that her character has raped people, has murdered people, and is abusive.

She seems to realize it more than Adam and Eddy do.

Are you an idiot? Or are you just one of those Regina must die SJWs?

You must have a lot of trouble with reading comprehension if you can't differentiate from an actress speaking about her character and an actress speaking from her character's POV.

Wait, are you talking about Lana or a particular Regina stan?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-02 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
My assumption would be Lana, given that she's said a lot of things in interviews/on twitter that are really frustrating regarding her character, and it's hard to see if she even realizes the kind of person she's playing or not. (i.e. does she realize that her character is an abusive murdering rapist?)

The actress? Really? Whatever you feel about the character, the actress has done nothing. She's a sweet, nice, adorable human being.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-02 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
"You will see how there is a genuine love and care for Graham…There was a physical connection to the character. He did become sort of a boy toy in both worlds."

About her rape/murder victim.

I don't think she's "sweet", "nice", and "adorable".

(Anonymous) 2014-11-02 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
This secret makes me sad.

Of course, Lana Parrilla's longest & highest profile role being on OUAT is also sad.

Maybe she's trying to keep her job.

To the OP

[personal profile] feotakahari 2014-11-02 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I think this is an understandable response to the quoted remarks. I'm not familiar with the show or the context, so I won't get involved in any arguments over it, but there's a massive, MASSIVE gap between "Character A sees herself as loving character B, who she abused" and "Character A loves and cares for Character B, who she abused." I don't think it would even be possible to accurately and faithfully portray the former if you described it in the latter terms.

To everyone else: again, not getting into any arguments over this. None. Zero. Zippo. I just wanted to support someone who was getting dogpiled, since I've been dogpiled here myself.

Lots of people expressing disagreement isn't dogpiling.

For the love of fucking shit, what's wrong with you people? What do you think should happen: once a secret gets X number of comments that disagree, everyone else MUST post only agreeing comments?

(And yeah, I know you're not gonna respond to this but I'm posting it anyway, because this redefinition of dogpiling is stupid and insecure and childish. Own your fucking opinions and deal with it when people don't agree)

A little while ago I read a sympathetic villain character in a readthrough of a play. For myself, I wholeheartedly side with the other characters and like to downplay the villain's sympathetic aspects, but getting into character as him and seeing everything from his vastly different point of view was really fun and really interesting. I don't agree with anything he says in the text, but to read him I of course had to understand why he himself agrees with what he says. It was a fun thought experiment, and it gave me a lot of new insight into the text that wasn't accessible to me when I only came at things from the reasonable and kind perspective of someone who sympathises with the other characters. There is a tremendous gulf between understanding the baddie from inside his own head, and understanding him as an outsider who sees him as the baddie he really his.
I think a LOT of people, in this thread and in general, just don't quite get this, but it's something actors and authors have to understand.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-02 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel you OP. Lana's said very problematic things and 'speaking through the pov of her character' isn't an excuse at the level she does it. From what I've seen she's not vocal enough that pretty much everything Regina has and continues to do is wrong. She also agreed with and pretty much egged on her fans that wanted Marian dead, WHILE MARIAN'S ACTRESS WAS GETTING SPAMMED WITH HATE MESSAGES. She fuels the fire of hateful fans and is always saying problematic stuff but always gets away with it because 'she's playing her character'. It's bullshit.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-02 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Like x a million.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-02 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Things Lana has said that are very problematic (and I do hate using the word problematic):

"Emma just takes [abuse] because she knows it’s deserved." Regina routinely treats Emma like crap. She bullies her, demeans her and shoots her down at every turn, even when ostensibly trying to help her with magic.

"[Regina] wants to strangle Emma and she has every reason to." Because Emma rescued a woman who was ABOUT TO DIE AT REGINA'S HANDS. Not just any woman, but the WIFE of her current love interest - who has his own problems at this point. (Yes, allow me to forgive you and adore you and angst over you, who FUCKING KILLED MY WIFE IN THE FIRST PLACE. Clever man.)

"You will see how there is a genuine love and care for Graham…He did become sort of a boy toy in both worlds.” On her rape victim.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-02 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with this. Although, I actually have a problem with what Emma did because I think in the context of time travel, changing the past is wrong because people could die as a result of what you did and Emma had no way of knowing what consequences would result from her actions.

This is a good essay on how I feel about Emma and about her rescuing Marian: http://ctrent29.livejournal.com/186935.html#cutid1

That being said, Regina is still awful and Lana goes out of her way to excuse her. And I don't buy the "in-character" excuse, and an actor sympathizing with their character to get into the role only goes so far.

She knows her fans are tweeting all sorts of horrible things at the actress playing Marian and responds to the situation by saying that she wants Marian to die.

An intelligent or decent person would have either reminded her fans that there is difference between reality and fantasy or stayed out of it completely. She opted to fan the flames. She's either an idiot or an asshole. There's no other way of looking at it.
