Anyone else been following this?

Excellent piece of activism that has been hijacked to talk about #notallmen because exploring the fact that not all cultures are guilty at the same rate. The people who did the video have even been forced to back down and make up clear excuses for the demographics in the video.

Right? Like, sure, let her just choose her street harassers more carefully next time? What the hell.

As for their complaints, I'd actually be interested to know if a really white woman--like, very pale, blonde hair, noticeably Caucasian features--would get more harassment from white men and less from other races. I don't think there's a good way to to test that, but I'm curious.

Can you even read? "Why are none of these guys white except for one out of 100?" means "All 100 of these guys should be white!" to you?

And it's an urban environment. There's traditionally more of an ethnic mix in cities. Obviously a significant number won't be white.

Good vid. I could have used that when talking to my uncle last weekend. He insisted that being constantly called back into the naked full body scanner thing should be seen as a complement :(

Ask him if he'd feel the same way about middle aged guys leering over his daughter's tits, or people scrutinizing his scans and debating about his dick size. Or point out that not everyone enjoys having their naked bodies ogled and if the person who's receiving this "compliment" doesn't enjoy it, then it's not actually a compliment by definition.

It wasn't about me it was about my aunt (not his wife another aunt) he said she should be glad that there was still something there that they were interested in at 50.

Ugh, gross. This is kind of a roundabout way for your uncle to say that he's okay with dudes leering at your naked body scans at the airport, too.

At the risk of getting shouted down, I...don't get how a lot of the things said to the woman in that video count as "harrassment." Some of them yes, most definitely, but how is a casual "How you doin'?" in passing harrassing someone? Were there a bunch of incidents not actually included in the video that made it add up to 100? Or is it considered unacceptably intrusive these days to simply say hi to a passing stranger?

(For the record: I'm a woman.)

IDK, I live in a pretty friendly town, and if I were taking a walk in a place where I might pass, maybe, one person in a block, I wouldn't be at all surprised if they said hi to me--assuming I didn't say hi to them first.

On the other hand, if I'm walking down a street full of people and some guy singles me out among all the other passers-by to say "How you doin'?" to, that doesn't feel like a friendly hello to me. Especially if he falls into step beside me and tries to pursue a conversation.

Yeah. I sometimes get a "how you doin'" and I enjoy it. Maybe it's a cultural thing?

But the guy who pestered her for her phone number was creepy as fuck. And also dumb as a rock. Does he really believe that any women would be interested in that?

The vast majority of this stuff, I do think is harassing.

If it's friendliness that I feel like the guy would give anyone who walked by - women AND men - then whatever. If it's something they wouldn't yell to a man, then they shouldn't yell it to me.

And frankly, I think it's kind of rude to yell things at anyone who is just trying to walk by, obviously not making eye contact with you, obviously looks like she's on the way to something. I think there are situations where obviously it's fine for a guy to chat up a girl without it being creepy, but I don't think one of those appropriate times is when she's trying to get somewhere and walking by without looking at you.

if the only reason someone's saying hello and being polite is because they want to fuck you, that's not exactly a comforting greeting. why aren't these "polite" strangers saying hello to all the men they passed?

idk it kinda sucks to be constantly reminded that half the population only is nice to you in the hopes of getting to fuck you. it may not qualify as "harassment" but it is not some nice "polite" greeting either.

This. Sometimes a friendly hello isn't just a friendly hello.

It's pretty crass to boil every expression of interest into another person down to "wants to fuck you."

Probably depends on the culture of where you live. I don't live in a city where people generally greet one another like that, so it'd be unusual to walk down the street and have someone you don't know shout hello at you. Not to mention that unless the men in the video are also shouting out hellos at everyone else including people they're not sexually attracted to, it seems pretty clear that their reason for doing so at a woman is a wee bit suspect.

IDK, I always associate "How you doin'?" (and of course tone/demeanor are a factor here) with being a chatup line, someone trying to initiate conversation that could lead to a hookup. It's usually not someone legitimately asking how you are feeling. So for me, I really don't want to hear that from some stranger on the street, especially if they try to get in my space while saying it. I'd be extremely uncomfortable.

I was raised not to speak to strangers. I took the same bus with a group of people who lived on the same block as me every day for three years, and I only ever spoke to any of them once or twice in that time period.

Day before yesterday some guy screamed FUCKING FAGGOT at me as loud as he possibly could from a distance of two inches.
