ngl, I still don't really understand what it's about. Like, I know that people are getting death threats and that it has something to do with that one woman who...wrote video game reviews? or supposedly slept with someone to get good video game reviews (and that turn out not to be true?. every time I try to read an article about it I just get bored and confused

In the broadest possible sense, it's about the fact that the people who are in the video games press and the people who are video game fans are quite different groups of people. The video game press tends to be urban, cosmopolitan, cultural intellegentsia with progressive - liberal - socialist - feminist views, whereas the video game fans tend to be much more regressive, anti-feminist, anti-social agendas, just a bunch of dudebros. And the tension of the one group trying to deal with the other boiled up and a bunch of the latter group got really fucking angry and started trying to destroy the institutions which represented the first group and the very possibility of anyone daring to side with them.

I don't care about video games enough to get involved, but I think reducing the whole thing to social justice versus basement dwellers is pretty unfortunate and indicative of how future discussions online will go about more important topics.

If someone wants to argue that the whole affair can be reduced into two basically separate things - one controversy about harassment and misogyny, and another about journalistic ethics and collusion - I think there's a lot of truth to that.

However, to me, anyone who is capable of coming to that conclusion is almost inevitably forced to come down on the anti-Gamergate side, because preventing harassment and misogyny is just intrinsically more important than fighting against journalistic ethics and collusion, and because the tactics and actions of the Gamergate movement are far from the most effective imaginable if they are interested in fighting journalistic collusion, and in fact make it hard to believe that they are a movement whose main issue really has to do with journalistic integrity in general, rather than the very specific subset of journalistic integrity having to do with issues concerning women. The Gamergate movement just has not acted in the way that you would expect a movement principally concerned with journalistic ethics to act.

There are decent people making excuses for being involved. But if they're willing to associate themselves with horrible /pol/ type people to do it, they're idiots at best, liars most likely.

They aren't trying to start a new tag or properly distance themselves from the sexists and racists and homophobes. They are willing to throw people like me under the bus so games they like get better reviews. I don't give a shit what Khazerad tells his fans to keep them clicking.

Even without all the crazy shit none of their goals seem important enough to get excited about. I mean ethics in gaming reviews? Is that in the internet day and age such a big deal? You can basically ask everyone what they think in 3 seconds.

And yet they've managed to get advertisers to pull and donated to multiple charities. It might be one of the dumbest movements ever, but they're doing more than most of tumblr's social justice ever has.

I've upvoted comments by people who're involved in the movement. That's probably as close as you're going to get on a site like this.

(To be honest, I wish there was a reasonable Gamergate movement to join, in the same sense I wish there was a reasonable Republican party.)

I don't have a horse in that race but along with the shit a lot of GGrs put out, I have also seen a lot of anti GGrs who were equally vicious as GGrs and I really think if you loudly support any of the two sides, you're probably a self-righteous hypocrite.

What's even the deal with the integrity in gaming journalism angle? Like, I don't get how it's such a big deal if big-name websites give biased reviews. You have many other ways to find out if you'll like a game before you buy it.
