What is the most unusual meat you ate?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-09 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I saw something labeled crocodile meat in store once. I still regret not buying it. Except it was probably fake, because there are no crocodiles in that country. And one time hunters who got puppies from my family dog visited and gave us some bear meat.

Just the usual, croc, kanga, and peafowl. I know someone who had european badger once, and another person who claims to have tried swan.

Uhhhh ostrich or alligator. But I don't view like raccoons and such as unusual (but they might be?).

I've eaten crocodile - as well as bison, kangaroo, wild boar...honestly I'll eat any meat unless it's an endangered species.

Wild boar. Um, lamb. Deer.

None of these were by choice, but out of politeness for two of them, and the third, the lamb, was unknowingly.

I'm a very vanilla meat eater - pig, cow, chicken. Give me something other than that and I'm like nope.

Except it was probably fake, because there are no crocodiles in that country.

Meat farming is a thing? And so is shipping food internationally?

I haven't had the opportunity to sample any exceptionally unusual meat, which is a bummer because I've got a long list I want to go through. The most "unusual"/hard-to-find-for-local-purchase meat I've had was venison, which I didn't like but also am pretty sure I didn't cook properly.

I'll admit that the most exotic thing I've ever tried was venison. Hell, my family is Greek and I've never had mayeritsa in my life. But the idea that lamb is ~exotic kind of makes me lol.

Meat just tastes like meat to me so I'm always underwhelmed by exotic meat. My friend had an exotic meat sampler thing for a party once and I tried pretty much everything (emu, yak, alligator... a bunch of weird stuff) and I was like "yep, that's sure meat all right."

My answer is always that I cannot 100% for certain say I haven't eaten dog, because I ate some really, really sketchy street food when I was in Asia. Then again, I have very little problem with eating dog in general as long as it was humanely slaughtered so wtfever. Could also have been cat, rat or meat-flavored cardboard as far as I know.

Moose. It was offered to me by my weird but awesome 97-year-old great grandma. I was maybe four or five years old. I liked it a lot, though.

Deep fried alligator nuggets in New Orleans. It was chewy and tasted like chicken.

Geoduck. And almost anything you can get at a sushi bar.

Whale, Reindeer, Lutefisk* , Moose, Horse*, grouse? I dunno all of it is pretty normal (but expensive) food in Norway, but apparently eating Reindeer meat isn't seen as normal everywhere?

I don't care what my meat is, as long as it isn't human, from an endangered species or tortured.

Edit: Lamb? Is that really an exotic thing? During autumn we eat a lot of lamb. Especially with cabbage in a stew type thing.

*does fish count?
*Only mixed in with other meat and stuff. I have never eaten "plain" horse meat, but it is used in production of Moose/reindeer/whatever sausages.

Do insect count? I had some sort of African caterpillar thing once. It could have done with some sort of dip.

Hmmm. When I still ate meat? Of land vertebrates I've eaten: rattlesnake, kangaroo, pidgeon, rabbit, bison, alligator, wild boar, venison (a lot), ostrich, pheasant, goat, duck... hard to remember all of them.

As far as seafood goes I've eaten a bunch of tropical fish and eel and whatnot.

Invertebrates: scorpion, spider, jellyfish, ants, ant larvae, crayfish.

I feel kind of bad about this in retrospect.

I've had alligator. It was tasty. I also accidentally tried escargot, which was gross.

I've always wanted to try bear meat. How was it?

Supposedly goat meat, but who knows, it might have been beef.

Not very adventurous of me, I know.

Either that or octopus.
