It's not just you. Admittedly, I was always a coffee-drinker, but he inspired me to free my coffee of cream and sugar and taste the drink itself. I even learned that Starbucks is nasty as hell without their fancy flavored syrups, so Godot helped me save money!

Seconded on this comment! Starbucks coffee makes me wanna cryyyyy!

42. Fucking signed. I wish they'd release more 'Holic chapters. I don't even feel like keeping up with Tsubasa all that much really. =/

1. I-I absolutely despise coffee. I think it's the most disgusting drink ever. But I'll be damned if Godot doesn't make me want to try it one more time. He is the only thing that ever made the stuff even slightly appealing to me. ._.

2. OH MY GOD. REDEADS SCARED THE SHIT OUT OF ME WHEN I WAS A KID. D:

26. ... I sort of agree. I have absolutely no problem with any of those characters, but it does bother me when people don't seem to recognize it as a stereotype.

27. I'm really kind of apathetic when it comes to pairing Edgey with people. Not sure why.

28. TRILO LOVE. &hearts

[identity profile] militarypenguin.livejournal.com 2007-12-26 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
2. This is not a secret. This is a well-known and accepted FACT.

7. I'm sure I know who you are and that is my story as well. :)

26. I'm willing to forgive either stereotype if there's enough variety in the character's personality to prevent it from staying on one track or the author gets creative with it. I'd say they're equally common cliches to find in anime/manga.

Also, does she have her own manga yet? (You know it's only a matter of time before she goes to Tokyopop...)

That show is so, so hilarious to me.

2. Re-dead's are so scary T_T The first time I saw them I was really really scared. It didn't help that my friend was holding my arm and when I got near them she screamed and it scared the bejeasus out of me!

7. You made a great secret there, I think when you say you see yourself in Shinji you answer your own question about why people hate him so much. Because everyone see's themself in him, and it scares people.

28. Your secret made me giggle even if puppets terrify me ^^;

36. Pssh, don't worry about what they say! XD Watch it and love it if you want to, and if they say "I told you so" then shrug your shoulders and say "meh!"

39. They kiss on stage? XD Fanservice much. You know... Bono is my friends cousin, I'll ask her if there is any way that could be cannon. XD

44. I don't care much for fandom shipping, but I'm the same with my OC's. They and my friends OC's are all I ever want to talk about, RP etc. I hope you have good luck on your story!

On the DVD Go Home, Bono kissed Edge. It wasn't like romantic and. . . French or whatever. It was just a kiss. It's not like they make out on stage but yeah. Kissing.

tl;dr, as always I guess

26. I don't get why people can't just like characters. They're characters, it's not like you have to live with them. Sure, CC would be a gigantic pain to be around if she were real. But so would Lelouch. Actually, most of the characters in that show aren't good people, but isn't that what makes them interesting? Aren't Asuka's violence and inferiority complex what makes her character interesting to watch? Can't we just watch characters and appreciate what they do as characters and how they interact with the story, rather than declaring them cliche or an annoying "type?"

I initially had a problem after I broke up with my boyfriend - I saw him in all my favourite characters. I couldn't watch any of them without realizing that the things they do to others are the things that upset me. But then I remembered an argument I had with him about how I could like weak, stupid characters. I like them because they're not my friends or my boyfriend - they're a character. They don't have to be perfect or likeable to be well-written.

I don't get why people can hate tsunderes or yamato nadeshikos on a whole. Hate them if they're poorly written, if they're 2-dimensional and completely underdeveloped, hate them if they show no real thought went into their design. But for gods sake, don't hate a character just because you don't like some personality type or role that they fit into. Hating an entire archetype from the get-go comes off as really stupid, and I don't get why it's the female ones that get such bashing. Why don't I see any secrets about how people hate inexperienced heroes or dark and brooding heroes?

And actually, they might be a stereotype as well, but I don't think you chose very good examples, because at least a couple of your examples break other stereotypes - Kallen and Asuka pilot mechas. Do you know how many women pilot mechas in mecha animes? Now that's a stereotype that I think needs to get broken. And CC, imo, was a brilliant turn - the first episode paints her off as the mysterious, pretty, yamato nadeshiko type. I mean, hero finds her in a box and she grants him magical powers, and she looks like a gentle sweet character and all. And then she turns out to be anything but. So yeah, they might be some stereotypical bitch character, but at the same time, can't you appreciate the parts of their character that defy stereotype?

42. I wish Clamp would finish Clover. It was adventurous in it's style, it had mature, unique, and interesting characters. It told an incredible story in a creative way, the world felt alive and fascinating. All-in-all, I think it was one of, if not the best work they've ever done. But Clamp writes what sells. I've given up on hope for X or Clover, because really, they just disappoint me.

[identity profile] annwyd.livejournal.com 2007-12-26 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
This is exactly how I feel about characters, and why I find it so hard to hate most of the ones that fandom hates. I've been known to get pissy at poorly-written characters, but it doesn't happen that often because usually when I find enough poorly-written characters I lose interest in the canon, heh. Other than that? ...yeah.

Personally, I much prefer the tsundere stereotype to the Yamato Nadeshiko or sweet girl one, but all in all, anime and manga are just cliché and stereotype bombs. There are very few characters that don't fit into one category or another, and to be honest, I can't even think of an example for either gender. I can definitely see where you're coming from - it'd be wonderful to have more characters that step away from the stereotypes or at least attempt to, including tsundere, which is becoming increasingly more popular as you said - but I don't know. At the end of the day, when you have to pick between one or the other because nothing in between exists, I'd have to go with tsundere. Or the happy, bubbly type, whatever it's called. Sweet type is fun, but I find tsundere more interesting, even though the predictability is still there. Er... hope this made sense. I'm sorry if I've ranted completely off topic.

I've often had similar thoughts. Actually, this is kind of my answer to the old philosophical question of "If God exists, why does He allow bad things to happen?" If we think of him as a writer, then the answer is obviously "Because it makes the story more interesting." Though I guess that's hardly reassuring. ^^;;

And you probably shouldn't worry too much about being a useless secondary character. I mean, normal writers have to focus on only a few main characters, but one would think that God would have the ability to give every character an important story, I guess.

Also, your use of Lemony Snicket's image for this secret amuses the hell out of me. XD

10. Well, Hannibal Lecter is still unbearably charming. Don't get your undies in a knot, mate.

26. I'm not going to say anything. Just that generalization = instafail in my book.

42. Don't sweat it, I agree. TRC is cute and all, and drunken Sakura will always make me giggle for minutes, but Holic has YUUKO and my current N.1 yaoi ship. And I don't ship yaoi pairings that much, mind you.

[identity profile] annwyd.livejournal.com 2007-12-26 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
7. I love the graphics on this so much I almost want to watch Evangelion.

10. My favorite TV character is a lying, murdering, drug-dealing thief, and I am so hot for him--and it's more for his personality than anything. :(

17. I don't know either of those fandoms, but I call "let's mess with fandom" shenanigans on this. It'd take a lot more than one international copyright lawyer to secure all the red tape needed to do that, and you have to know that.

But on the off chance it's real, hey, go for it.

26. I'm not sure I even feel like commenting on this, but I guess I do have some stuff to say. Some of it's a valid point. I think a full-on Yamato Nadeshiko (submissive, existing only to serve the higher power of men) is inherently a more degrading stereotype than a full-on tsundere (fierce and take-action despite being confused about her emotions and inclined to wind up turning to goo around a man eventually), but both can be very irritating and degrading when used badly.

I will note that I'm sick of dismissing entire 'categories' of female characters wholesale just because society's ever-present sexism forces nearly all of them into tighter molds and worse cliches than the males. It seems like a more sensible, productive, and feminist (in the sense of "positive about femininity and women") reaction would be to find the good in those characters when possible and reclaim them by seeking out their development as characters independent from men. And yes, I know, not everyone is necessarily going to want to do that, but it would be nice if more would consider it.

5. Sad thing is, I sometimes feel that way too. I've never seen myself as the 'hero' of any story, just something for plot-moving purposes.

22. Aaaand here we go. Seperate comms for EVERY FRICKING THING PEOPLE!

32. I like it too! Krory needs more love.

42. Nahhh. I prefer it to Tsubasa too. It has a more linear story, without dimension-skipping. XD;
