Fandom grudges thread

Vent your personal grudges against other writers/fans in your fandom here. No names please.

Re: Fandom grudges thread

Star Trek fandom

Warning, venting ahead:

There's a Spuhura fan who called me a misogynist for not liking the way Spock/Uhura was written. This Spuhura fan though, seems to think that it's completely fucking fine, to call Katrina from Sleepy Hollow a cow and other names because she gets in the way of Ichabod/Abbie. Considering that I have never insulted Uhura (called her names, insinuated that she's manipulating Spock, or any of that other bullshit), I would just like to take this time to call that Spuhura fan a hypocrite and let her know that she can go fuck herself.

Thank you kindly.

I'm still pretty pissed at this one story I read. I can't say that it misled me because I'm not sure how to warn for this but the way the story ended up going completely shit on all the concepts of the original book and destroyed the characters. Worse, it started off interesting and good and there was no indication of where it would end up. I can't find a lot of this pairing and there were other elements that are rarely touched on and it looked like something good. But they very end was just horrible. I felt awful after reading it.

This is just a general complaint, but goddamn, when I see a fic that has a beautiful Steve Rogers H/C summary, but the actual fic is about someone else's feels I just want to smack the author's over the head with a rolled-up newspaper.

And no, I'm not just talking about Tony, though he is the worst.

There's an author in my fandom who is a BNF. She writes hundreds of stories that are all less than a 1,000 words each and are bland as fuck. It's literally the same fluffy formula over and over again. Even when she pulls out the common tropes like Aliens Made Them Do It, there's still no character development whatsoever. It happens. People have one conversation. Everything's okay again.

Yet she gets hundreds of kudos every time. I hate her SO MUCH.

For the love of God, learn that your readers do not always share your sexual politics. I do not appreciate being called a sexually repressive and repressed prude by inference just because I would prefer not to watch people having sex. Also, would it have killed you to warn for the 20,000-word rant on rape culture?

For the love of gods, please stop using your fanfics as your personal soapbox. Your fics would actually be enjoyable if not for that. No, I don't believe that Character A used to run a social justice blog. No, Character B wouldn't launch into a rant about gender norms. No, Character C wouldn't even know what internalized misogyny is.

My request for gen fic was met with links to increasingly slashier fics, even though I tried to be polite about it, and kept requesting gen only. Then the slash fanart started pouring in. So. Yeah.

Forever frustrated that when I go to check the pixiv tag for one of my fandoms, I see this one shitty ass artist's work. It doesn't get a lot of art these days, so to check that tag and see that there's new art yet it's just that artist's work is beyond frustrating.

There is a total scumbag in the Ranma fandom that uses their aspergers as a weapon to get their own way and always claims his viewpoint is justified by "aspergers mean I can't lie" -direct quote- and has completely distorted the entire perception of the show's canon. To listen to him the entire thing is more grimdark than the Nolan Batman movies instead of a goofy comedy. He's also been on a mission to purge any Japanese names from the English fanwikis even though the official translations use the Japanese untranslated. The guy has no life because he seems to be online 24/7, which is the only thing that makes me think he is a sperg instead of just an asshole. I wish he'd go jump in a lake.

This one BNF in one of my main fandoms that runs a graphics blog and for some reason has emerged as some sort of guru about the series. But they seem more interested in pushing their own biases onto the canon and passing it as irrefutable analysis, and act like their responses and theories are better than others/the only possible theory.

It's silly, but they honestly piss me off more than they should

There's a a tumblr famous Cersei stan who frequently posts malicious tweets about Jaime and Brienne shippers and encourages others to do the same. Other fans seem to find this funny, but her obsession with hating rival shippers borders on unhealthy. I guess every fandom has one of those though?

Person 1:

You're a big believer in logic and reason, and you think all of your beliefs are based in logic. If anyone disagrees with you, you conclude that they must be illogical, letting their emotions getting the better of them, and you talk to them like you're a parent and they're a disobedient child. You get indignant if you're accused of insulting others--they're not insults, they're factual statements! And of course, even if you declare that the other person is so illogical you can't reason with them, you never, ever let anyone else get the last word, continuing to post until every other poster has given up discussing the subject.

Your idea of logic is so incredibly ruthless that the villain in a magical girl anime would think you're too cold-blooded. When people WTF at you for advocating mass murder, it's not because they can't accept the necessary cost, it's because your "necessary cost" is completely over-the-top! But frankly, your utter sociopathy doesn't even bug me as much as your total condescension and complete imperviousness to any logic or reason not your own!

Honestly, if I tried to say this to your face, you'd find some way to tell me I was being illogical and letting my emotions get the best of me. So I think I'll just delete your comments on my fic if you keep insulting my other commenters. I know it's bad etiquette to delete comments on the site in question, but I refuse to believe it's good etiquette to let you keep running your mouth at folks who're trying to be polite.

Person 2:

I run a group that collects short stories in my fandom. You made ten new additions to the group, all of which I deleted for length violations. When I informed you of this, this was your full and complete response:

Many of the stories in the collections and anthologies I submitted are under 2,500 words. Some are not. Are you saying that a collection of short stories can have NO stories that are over 2,500 words within the anthology as a whole? That seems truly, drastically, severe.

I would find it difficult to believe that having a mixture of short story lengths within a given anthology would not be commonplace. Additionally, 2500 words is closer to short-short story length. From Wikipedia:

In contemporary usage, the term short story most often refers to a work of fiction no shorter than 1,000 and no longer than 20,000 words (5 to 20 pages). Stories of fewer than 1,000 words are sometimes referred to as "short short stories",[5] or "flash fiction."

As a point of reference for the genre writer, the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America define short story length in the Nebula Awards for science fiction submission guidelines as having a word count of fewer than 7,500.

Based on, well, the real world, it might be reasonable to reconsider the length you are willing to accept.

Just . . . go fuck yourself.

(For reference, this chick is pretty much the Anne Rice of my particular fandom. She's absolutely legendary for the size of the bitch-fits she throws when people criticize her writing, to the point that when I complained anonymously about a bitch-fit someone had thrown, the very first comment asked if I was talking about her.)

A few years ago, I snooped on a private mod forum at a board I went to, because a glitch had given me access. A bunch of my friends had said really hurtful things about me.

Case in point, I used to IM with one of them. I thought we were friends. You know what he said? Something like "I always cringe when she's on IM." That just... crushed me. And another person said I hated the site and was trying to stir trouble, even though I'd actually been trying to apologize for a friend stirring shit.

It just... ruins otherwise happy memories about that place, because I wonder how many people really just hated my guts. :( Fortunately I do know I had some actual friends there.

I get that you're super into one character and one ship involving them. But you freak out when anyone says anything negative about either and try to fill the fandom with discussions of those two things even when people want to talk about other things. It is annoying.

Re: Fandom grudges thread

Since when did fic become a soap box for your political agendas? I thought we were here to tell stories about the characters, not put words into their mouths about issues that they have never even heard of.

Re: Fandom grudges thread

Almost any author who uses foreign language without actually speaking it (the whole of the Hetalia fandom was very guilty of this): Stop it. 99% of those fics could be improved by stopping this google translated bullshit.
And if you absoultely want to do it, at least fucking use the right spelling.

There's a person who makes unbelievably shitty CGI-looking portraits/dolls that are just horrible and I hate them. They're not even "done" enough to give a properly creepy uncanny-valley response. Their faces are exaggerated to the point of being racist stereotypes, and their fashion choices are hideous. The artist hasn't shown any sign of improvement, but they don't date their work so I have no idea how long they've been at it.

I'm an artist too, and don't want to be That Person who squashes some newbie. And I don't think I can fairly critique this work because all I can think is "stop it stop it stop it." But ugh seeing their stuff among actually talented artists is so fucking annoying!

Stop pitting shows you don't like against your shows for no reason. The ones you do it with are usually not comparable, but you seem to have this made-up idea that the shows you hate are the evil twins of the ones you like. Most of the things you accuse them (and their fandoms) of doing wrong aren't even true.

There's a BNF in my fandom who wrote a fic considered a classic by many. It's unfinished, but still massively popular. I respect that she isn't going to finish it but at the same time she still tries to coast on that fame by encouraging readers to to understand how ~*~*~deep and meaningful~*~*~ it is and how every single line of it is like, shaped by a master artisan out of literary genius.

I kind of wish she'd either finish it and bask in the deserved glory or just go away.
