When your parents have to choose between groceries and rent, entertainment is definitely a luxury. It's so not a necessity. Video games, CDs, things like class rings or going to prom, all of it was a luxury when my parents couldn't buy us winter coats .

Poor people should never buy things to make their lives a little easier to deal with. Gotcha.

Seriously, I know where you're coming from (my mom used to starve herself to make sure I got fed) but the idea that poor people should never buy even the slightest bit of entertainment -- a toy, a video game, whatever -- is IMO a classist lie perpetuated by wealthier people who think they know what's best for the less fortunate.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-03 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
exactly. I've gotten flack from certain (wealthier) members of my family for always giving "frivolous" gifts for holidays and giving toys to Blue Santa, but they don't understand because they were never poor. Sometimes a doll or a Lego set is more important than anything else in the world, simply because it doesn't aid your survival. When you're 6 and you've barely got a roof over your head, that doll your grandpa gave you may be the only thing keeping you afloat.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-03 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
It's also a mindset that lends itself well to fallacies like believing a poor person wouldn't be poor if they just hadn't bought that entertainment. I don't know how many times I've seen people comment about how a poor person spent x amount on a PS3 for their kid and they should have saved that money for.....

For what? That extra $50 a month that a person might spend on entertainment isn't going to be more useful if they put it towards "bettering their situation".

Exactly. How exactly is disconnecting my internet and selling my computer going to help me afford a better place?

(Anonymous) 2015-01-03 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
That extra $50 a month that a person might spend on entertainment isn't going to be more useful if they put it towards "bettering their situation".

Uh, yes it would. I know that for me, an extra $50 a month would make my life a lot easier. It would be a cushion in case one of my bills ended up being more than I had calculated for.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-03 07:11 am (UTC)(link)
You are purposefully misunderstanding what is being said.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-03 10:46 am (UTC)(link)
That extra $50 a month that a person might spend on entertainment isn't going to be more useful if they put it towards "bettering their situation".

Are you just being deliberately stupid?

$50 a month saved up instead of spent on a luxury good you don't actually need and won't actually affect your life one way or another (save for possibly the hour you spend playing before reverting back to complaining about your shit and whining that you've just wasted $50) = $600 a year. That goes a very long fucking way to bettering someone's situation.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-03 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, poor people would never said that because obviously buying something unnecessary when you're at risk of not even having enough to eat in a few days/losing your house is the best choice.

Better to enjoy yourself for a few hours than eat, right? And saying otherwise is classist, gotcha.
dethtoll: (Default)

[personal profile] dethtoll 2015-01-03 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Who fucking gets to decide what's "unnecessary?"

You?

So by your standards poor people shouldn't be doing anything except working in minimum-wage jobs and when they go home instead of watching a TV they WASTED ALL THEIR MONEY ON OMFG they should just stare at the wall.

Do I have that right?

That isn't what dethtoll means at all, and you fucking know it. you're a classist piece of shit.

It's the "Why not just sell your laptop/console/video games HURDDURR?" shit. Or "WHY DID YOU BUY THIS WHEN YOU'RE SO POOR AND COULD BE SAVING UP?"

Because I need fucking sanity, and if all I fucking do is SAVE SAVE SAVE and don't spend occasionally on something NOT bills, I'd probably have hurt myself long ago from sheer lack of shit to do.

Wow, what a Grade A generalisation!

I am not classist because I think it's better to pay for necessities than entertainment. I am someone who grew up in extreme poverty, who had to live through quite a bit of it as an adult, and only very recently got to a point in my life where I can afford anything besides those necessities. Am I classist, because I have fucking priorities? Am I really fucking classist because I have BEEN HOMELESS and I know firsthand that not having toys is better than not having a house?

I think I have a right to say that I know what's better for the less fortunate when I spent most of my life BEING less fortunate.

You say your mom staved herself to feed you so obviously SHE knows what being poor is like but everything you've said in this thread is completely detached from the realities of poverty, so you have very obviously never faced poverty as an adult responsible for their own finances. Take your middle class comfort bubble and shove it up your ass. You do not get to tell people to do stupid things that will cost them their livelihoods and possibly their lives just because YOU have no idea how to survive without your precious little toys that the rest of us sacrifice for the sake of surviving another day.

Wow. You don't even know the first thing about me and yet you're making all sorts of assumptions as to what kind of life I lead and how much money I make and all this and all that. My situation is a lot worse than you think it is, but I don't owe you an explanation for anything and I am not going to give you one, because you fucking suck and we can never be friends because I don't hang out with sociopaths.

I am not even going to begin with most of your post because it is so insulting, blinkered, and self-absorbed. I am going to ignore it because it all stems from the central issue you have so politely laid out for me:

I think I have a right to say that I know what's better for the less fortunate when I spent most of my life BEING less fortunate.

This is qualified fucking bullshit. Aiight? The unbelievable temerity you have that you think just because you grew up miserable you get to decide how miserable other people are. "Oh, you bought your kid a toy to keep him entertained? What kind of shitty parent are you, that's money you could be putting towards something necessary! And I know what's necessary because I grew up poor and that gives me the right to dictate to other poor people what they're allowed to do!"

That's not a generalization. That is a description of the exact kind of shitty, selfish, and above-all BITTER attitude you and others have been displaying in this shithammer thread.

You're an egomaniacal piece of shit and I don't want to talk to you anymore.

This.

I think many people here consider themselves poor and think that if someone says something is a luxury, it means that someone is saying they don't deserve that.

But poverty is relative and even if they're able to afford some luxuries it doesn't mean everyone can do the same without sacrificing stuff they actually need. For people in such situation buying a luxury can make their situation worse, even if they enjoy themselves for a while.

It'll be better if they could recognize that instead of complaining every time this topic arises.

Just because I live in first-world poverty doesn't make me feel better about living in poverty, thanks. I don't need or want your judgment or your opinion on what I do with my spare money.

Yes, yes, you're trolling and can't even read what other people say.

video games are soooo not in the same category as a class ring

"honk honk i'm poor so i get to tell other poor people what to do honk honk"

(Anonymous) 2015-01-03 06:55 am (UTC)(link)
My point was that some form of entertainment is a necessity for mental health. Not that video games aren't a luxury. That was what the whole "what you can afford" thing was about.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-03 08:22 am (UTC)(link)
I chose to go without dinner for a month (well, basically all food, but I get fed lunch on the primary of my three jobs) so that I could buy a video game I wanted. Because my mental sanity was more important than food to me at that point in my life. People have different priorities and you do not get to decide for others.

Also? A class ring and going to prom are totally not the same thing as a video game or a CD. Those first two are unneeded luxuries. And expensive ones at that. But if someone chooses to sacrifice things to have them because they are that important to them? Who am I to judge?

(Anonymous) 2015-01-03 09:03 am (UTC)(link)
DA

I'd put prom on about the same level as video games or CDs, personally. It's a pretty major social event, and at least where I'm from, might be the last chance you have to see your friends as a group before they scatter to the four winds after senior year. It doesn't have the same reusability as physical media entertainment, but not being left out of a major group bonding experience can be incredibly important to an adolescent.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-03 10:28 am (UTC)(link)
If you prioritize a video game over eating, then you don't think much of your mental sanity.

What would've happened during that month if you'd fallen ill because of your behavior? What if you'd ended up racking up insurmountable hospital bills (or if you're in a country that provides free healthcare, drained resources that could've gone towards those ill through no fault of their own) purely because of your own irresponsible behavior?

Idiot.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-03 11:57 am (UTC)(link)
lol shut the fuck up. did you not read? they said they were able to get lunch during their jobs - they had to skip going out to eat for one particular meal.

assuming they eat breakfast as well, that's two less meals. you don't know their entire fucking situation. why don't you shut the fuck up and stop trying to dictate other people's lives because your fucking life is probably in goddamn shambles? you piece of judgmental shit.

Well, no. With poorness also comes a lot stress and isolation. Prom is a good way to make yourself feel like you've got friends and you be as fancy as them. It's a great moral boost.

And so it goes with the class ring. As you say, people have different priorities.
