Fandoms you miss

(Anonymous) 2015-01-06 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
What fandoms were you previously in that you now miss? Either because you left the fandom for whatever reason, or because the activity has dried up?

the Redwall fandom.

It was a little bit of both to be honest.

I remember reading Redwall forums as a kid!

Seeing it dry up was kind of sad. The old people kind of grew out of it. And then the author died.

I somehow completely missed the Redwall fandom, and I would have been all over that in my early internet days. (My first fanfic was a blatant self-insert "I'm an otter now wtf??" Redwall fic written with the determination that it WOULDN'T BE LIKE THOSE OTHER TERRIBLE SELF-INSERTS. [it was, of course, but it stayed decently entombed in notebooks]) I think it's because most of my fandom connections spiraled out from either the Pit or lj, so if it wasn't on there I didn't see it.

Still reread those books occasionally. They're not good for bingeing as they run together, but I love them. What's your fave, do you remember? I like Mossflower (Martin my ultimate mouse crush), The Long Patrol (epic battle scenes precious), and Mariel (cause she's a BADASS).

SGA. It's not dead, but I miss when it was in its prime

OMG, yes, Nonnie. I was at my most prolific during that heyday. So much fun.

For me, it's Life on Mars/Ashes to Ashes fandom. I think it was the last really good LJ fandom. Tumblr was around, but hadn't eaten fandom yet.

It was a fandom that had multiple popular slash pairings, dozens of het options (canonical and otherwise), and even at least one good femmeslash ship. And because of both the time travel element and the metaphysical questions raised in A2A, it generated a ton of interesting discussion/meta. There were also quite a few good fanvidders out there, using music from the period.

I'm surprised it's not really around much these days, but the fandom has almost entirely dried up and blown away.

I was never in either fandom but I totally love the shows. The Gov remains one of the best characters I've had the pleasure of watching. Have you read any of the novels being sold (and if so, do you recommend them?)

Shoot, any recs at all for someone who has only watched the series and then drifted aimlessly without hope of enjoying anything new?

The secret reminded me of how I miss Death Note fandom. Was my largest and longest fandom ever. I was in it for years but it got quieter when the anime and manga had finished, and I don't think it survived the DW migration.

The Drakken/Shego corner of the Kim Possible fandom. Sure, there were only, like, five of us, but some of the fic there is still among my favorites in any fandom.

I legit loved the MCU fandom post-Avengers, but the trends and activity levels of different fandom corners have changed significantly in the past 2ish years. My pairing is no longer really active, and the canon material just keeps getting darker. I miss the funner version of that fandom. :(

I've recently really been missing M*A*S*H fandom. It was amazingly active and high quality for such an old non-sci-fi fandom.

I can't remember if the fic was genuinely amazing, or if it just seemed amazing to me because I was 14-15 years old and had barely discovered fanfic when I got into the fandom, but I remember being so deeply emotionally affected by it, and I still have an impression that's basically -- you know all those angst tropes that you like as a guilty pleasure but can't take seriously because it's so unrealistic? Suicide, self-harm, extreme depression, huge nervous breakdowns, and extreme death and gore and tragedy and danger all the time, everywhere, with convenient excuses for the characters to be caught up in the middle of it? It was all CANON in M*A*S*H fandom.

Mass Effect, sort of. I don't miss the drama, but I do miss coming up with all kinds of crazy/cracky ideas with friends on personal LJs, and looking at all the cool fan art and stuff. I drifted away from it shortly before ME3 due to interests changing and life issues at the time, and most of my friends bailed on it after the ME3 trainwreck. I don't even bother looking at the Tumblr side of things: I hear enough downwind from friends who are still active-ish in the fandom for me to stay away, lmao.

I guess I just miss the fandom synergy that my experience in ME fandom had... that's something my recent fandom experiences have sorely lacked.

F-Zero's another. Everything died after the shitty anime series and tie-in games, and there hasn't been anything new for the last 11-12 years (Nintendo recent remarks of 'lol we ran out of ideas' doesn't help), and that's not counting Captain Falcon's appearances in 2 (3, if you count SSB3DS) Smash Bros titles since then. The fandom back in the day was largely competition-based with emphasis on time trials, though. Very little creative output, though I suspect if there is any lurking on Tumblr -or Pixiv- these days, it's probably more focused on that than competitions. I haven't really looked.

I will always miss Lord of the Rings, though I think The Hobbit films have been drawing people back in a bit. I know I've seen a resurgence of Legolas/Gimli (fics and art, though I haven't read too much of the fic), anyway.

Also SGA. Always SGA. And SPN. (Well, mostly I miss Dean and Sam, but I wasn't enjoying the show much when I dropped it, and I just don't know if it's worth picking back up again.)

Sometimes I miss the House fandom. I was pretty active back in the day until the show got horrible and I left the fandom.

I kind of miss how active the Potter fandom used to be. As crazy as it got, it was a huge part of my life. And I still love it a lot and wish there were more discussions and longer fics written.

POTC. The forum/fic site I was on kind of withered away, and then the owner of the site kind of disappeared and the site shut down and the forum was infested with spam... :[

It was my first online experience in a forum and fandom, so it will always be dear. That said, I'm sad they're making another movie, mostly because I love Jack too much to see him dragged through the dirt (they could have stopped at 1)

Lord of the Rings, Fullmetal Alchemist, Supernatural. Two I left because Real Life got on the way, one because I couldn't take the crazy (or the crapification of the show) anymore.

I kinda miss the Good Omens fandom sometimes. I was in it years ago, long before the current...what is it, a radio version? I wonder if any of the awesome old fic and art I recall has survived out there and if I could find it again...

It's almost kind of embarrassing, but...the best fandom I was ever in was the Dark Angel fandom. I often doubt that anything will ever be able to compare.

DC comics fandom. The reboot + DC deleting their website forums in favor of Facebook/Twitter pretty much took me completely out of it. I couldn't stand most of the other DC forums because while I could deal with the neckbeards on the main forums, the side sites were horrible. There was one particular forum I mainly clung to, and I'd met so many great people. There weren't many of us participating on that section in comparison to, say, the Batman or Superman sections, but we really gelled together. I miss that.
