I know what you mean. Sometimes I feel like they just didn't 'get' certain scenes. But I suppose nothing can compete with you imagined in your head.

I had a similar reaction to the Hobbit films. Mostly, the things I was looking forward to never made it into the movie (which is so wrong considering how long they were). I wouldn't go so far as to say that EVERYTHING I wanted didn't work, but I was definitely underwhelmed.

The Harry Potter films petered out for me. I've seen the first three and caught parts of the others on TV but I haven't really watched them. They just stopped being interesting to me, though I love the books.

Which parts did they leave out? (I've only watched the first one once when it originally came out in theatres.)

Yeah this. If I hadn't read the books I would've liked the films a lot more.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-12 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
One if the things about the movies is that the special effects were really underwhelming to me. I liked the house elves but the rest were either standard or silly. It might be that lord of the rings is a though act to follow but still.

Also the costume design. Why was everyone in a suit? It's just not very magical.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-13 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
lmao the costume design was terrible. It made all the girls look like rich girls who knew how to coordinate magazine-worthy clothes every day.

Hm, really?

I wonder if I was just never that hung up on particular scenes in HP because I haven't thought of it this way. (And there ARE books for which I do get hung up on certain scenes. so idk.)

I'm curious - any other major scenes that disappointed you?

(Ok, I can think of one exception for HP - I thought the scene where Neville killed Nagini wasn't done well. And Voldy's death, even though it wasn't a ~favorite~ of mine, esp. compared to the rest of DH, was also really anticlimactic. But DH2 was still a really good movie to me IDK)

I have never forgiven the 6th movie for cutting out the battle at the end. Death Eaters are just prancing through the school and no one is stopping them.

Not OP
I wanted more from Fred's death, Perry's return and Remus' fatherly fears. I get why they weren't there given that Harry is the main guy, but I wanted them just the same. Also more from Snape. His story was barely in the movie that bears his name.

They totally screwed (to the point I can't watch POA) the reunion of Sirius and Remus and the explanation of who they were to James so that them being part of the rest of the movies made no sense. They were nothing in the movies when that scene in the shack was a major development both for Harry's character and the overall plot.

I remember looking forward to the chapter where Harry see's his father and his friends during their school days bullying Snape. But the movies made it extremely brief.

That and other things. Usually I like movie or anime adaptions the same as source material, but as far as Harry Potter goes I vasty prefer the book versions.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-14 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I was annoyed when they basically excised that from OotP. I hope an extended version gets made eventually.

I remember the third movie cut out a lot I was looking forward too, though now I can't quite remember what the scenes were exactly.

Anything related to the backstory was cut. They didn't even bother taking the time to explain who the Marauders were. If you'd just seen the movie, you'd have no idea.

I remember seeing a gif icon back in the day featuring this conversation:

Snape: Lupin, why do I hate you so much again?
Lupin: I don't know, the script doesn't say.

Not so much a scene I was looking forward to or anything, but-- in the first film. The fact that Dumbledore does not explain to Harry why Snape was trying to save his life. I mean, we now know it was oodles more complicated than fulfilling some life debt, but if you hadn't read the books it would just seem like Snape was the misunderstood hero of the first film. And then Harry seems like a complete little bastard for coming into the second film with a hate boner for a guy who spent the entirety of his first year quietly protecting him from Quirrell. Harry walks into the Great Hall, and before Snape can so much as give him a dirty look, he's like 'Oooh, that fucker. God, I hate him.'

They ended up dropping most everything specific about that whole event in tPoA, but it still really bothers me that it's left as 'Snape protecting Harry out of the goodness of his heart' and the little ass never even says thank you. At least they left in the earwax line.

I'm still really pissed off they left Charlie out. Bastards.

But i tell myself they'd have cast some lame arse actor anyway so it's for the better.

I know exactly how you feel. All the movies kind of fell flat for me, but the worst was the scene where Harry uses the resurrection stone to see his parents, Sirius and Remus. There was so much emotion in the book, that just seemed to have been completely removed in the movie version to me.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-13 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
This was the biggest disappointment for me. That is my favourite scene out of all the books, and it was not done justice in the slightest in the film. It lacked any sense of weight or emotional resonance.

[personal profile] sachiko_san 2015-01-13 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
I used to enjoy the movies and when I went back to reread the books and saw that extra scene in the HBP movie where the Death Eaters randomly attack the Burrow, I was immediately turned off of the movies (I had seen the DH movies before the 6th one), and I won't even watch them past Chamber of Secrets. Also how the completely fucked up Harry vs. Voldemort, I just can't even.

I was completely underwhelmed by the final battle, but especially the scenes between Harry and Voldemort.

On the other hand, I love Diggory's death way more in the movies than the books. It was meh to me in the book, but very moving in the movie.

I'm okay with the first 2 movies, but the third one was utter crap (mainly Alfonso Cuarón is such a shitty director). Everything I loved from the book was cut and the way the Marauders' backstory was handled? FAIL!

This isn't even a secret for me. I dislike the movies' execution of pretty much everything.

My favorite character is Ron, so I'm bitter.

I'll admit, I haven't read past Harry Potter Book 4. The movies I've seen... uh, 1-4, maybe 5? and 7 part 1. So I am obviously NOT that bright on the Harry Potter canon.

Still, I did find the animation sequence in Deathly Hallows 1 a pleasant surprise. Lurching from Prisoner of Azkaban straight to Deathly Hallows was a hell of a trip, let me tell you.
