Wandering Son, Tiger & Bunny, Yu Yu Hakusho, Kara no Kyoukai, Gankutsuou, Utena, Rose of Versailles, Moyashimon... And I'm going to stop now, I don't have all day.

Paradise Kiss too.

Should I take that as a rec list?

Honestly, I wasn't really happy with how Fire Emblem was handled. Most of his development was in the movie and the drama CDs.

I don't remember a queer character in Yu Yu Hakusho, but it's been so long since I read it that I hardly remember anything about it. I haven't seen any of the others except Gankutsuou.

The author of YYH also has another series called Hunter x Hunter that has gender ambiguous characters in it too. He's married to the author of Sailor Moon which has lesbians.

There were three gay guys in Yu Yu Hakusho. The first one was a creepy guy lusting after one of the main characters, the other two were Sensui and Itsuki, one of the msin villain and his boyfriend.

Wandering Son is a slice-of-life middle school drama. It is very quiet and subdued, and moves too slowly for my taste, but as far as trans stuff goes, it's not too bad.

(I am ridiculous picky about trans fiction.)

Re: OP

I /think/ the Trans* character is the chick who was raped by her father until she poured acid over half her body so he'd lose interest in her. I say "her" because she does become a woman again at the end, when she hooks up with Hiei.

Genkaku Picasso has a trans character's coming out story, treated pretty respectfully. She's more of a background/supporting character after her starring chapters, but it's a pretty short manga and she gets as much focus as anyone else does after their starring role.

There's also a few yuri manga out there that are more realistic takes on lesbian relationships than you'd expect -- Girl Friends, for instance, is a fun story of two teenage girls living ordinary lives while slowly falling for each other, while Rica 'tte Kanji is a more-or-less autobiographical story by a lesbian author.

queer/questioning, something i forgot, intersex, lesbian, trans, bisexual, asexual, gaaaaay

(Anonymous) 2015-01-15 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
It's silly.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-15 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
I think people are a little quick to make anime/vidya characters trans when they're more a critic of Japan's rigid gender roles (Persona's Naoto and Dangan Ronpa's Chihiro come to mind) or a fetish object (traps!=trans), but there's definitely good potrayals of trans characters out there too.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-15 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously. Japan is really retrograde on a LOT of gender and sexuality issues, and if you want to enjoy anime you just have to go in with that in mind. Yes, it's improving and that is a very good thing, but let's not pretend things aren't what they are.

Y'know, I'm desperate enough for trans characters that I'm happy to read Naoto and Chihiro that way. It's that or more of the damn tragi-trans narrative where they end up sitting around transing all day.

(Seriously, I get it writers, you want to show trans people go through shit, but don't they ever have to scrub the floor or save the world or SOMETHING? I have more shit to do than gender all damn day!)

What's this about? Someone fill the noob in?

OP

(Anonymous) 2015-01-15 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
To be honest, she's a bit of a stereotypical character--very cute, very feminine, and hopelessly in love with the MMC after he helps her get away from an angry dog. He seems very open-minded to her, and she thinks he'll be okay with her being trans. When she tells him, he freaks out, and at first, that's played for comedy. But the FMC bonds with her as someone who also has body issues, and the show gets surprisingly serious as they lift each other's spirits. This character actually becomes something of an inspiration to the FMC, making her believe that even if other people mock you for your body, you still deserve to be loved. Also, the MMC comes around a bit at the end of the episode, and while he doesn't outright apologize, he does take back some of what he said.

I haven't finished the show yet, so I'm not sure how she turns out. Apparently, she winds up dating the most un-PC character in the cast, which does worry me a little. (In what I've seen, he's very dismissive of her and refers to her by her male name, so I'm hoping he gets a lot of character development before that.)

Image: still shot from an anime. One girl, tall, thin, with light brown hair, is standing over the other, small and blonde, looking concerned. They look like they are at a school somewhere. The subtitle reads “...I’ll just be laughed at like before.”

Text: I can’t believe the writers actually went there. This is the first anime I’ve watched that not only had a trans character, but took her troubles seriously.

I feel like this gives the lie to how tolerant a lot of other anime tries to be. Everywhere I look thera are attractive young lesbians, but how often is anything else in the QUILTBAG treated as anything other than a punchline?

(Anonymous) 2015-01-15 08:22 am (UTC)(link)
Huh, I don't remember this happening in the series, but it's been eight years since I watched it. Thanks for this secret, OP, one more reason for me to definitely watch this series again! :)
