Image: screen cap of Eomer

Text: I loved everything about this scene except the fact that Eomer bows. He’s a fellow king! He’s Aragorn’s peer!

OTOH we got to see Eomer again and his hair and costume are hot, so there’s that.

P.S. If you ever Google image search this scene, don’t type “crowning” and nothing else by mistake. Trust me on this.

Maybe he's secretly an Aragorn's fan.

Mmm, Eomer. (Sorry, that's about all I've got.)

I just see it as a sign of respect and don't really care if it's realistic or appropriate or not.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-18 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe it was just a sign of respect and a kind of "thanks for leading the group that just saved everyone's collective asses" thing.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-18 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
isn't aragorn the high king of all the humans? other human kings would bow to him because he's the first of the peers. elven and dwarven kings don't need to bow to him.

Not exactly, no. But Rohan, at least in the books, does rent their land from Gondor. Although there is no evidence this is true in the movie.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-18 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
He's king of Gondor and Arnor. Other human lands are not Aragorn's to rule, and would probably take rather violent exception to any attempt to do so.

The land that makes up Rohan was once part of Gondor, and the first king or Rohan swore an oath of friendship betwixt the two nations, but they're still an independent country with their own laws, royalty, and customs.

Well, in the books Rohan rents their land from Gondor. So it makes sense. On the other hand, it can't be that way in the movie, because otherwise Theoden would not have been able to choose whether or not to come to Gondor's aid

The Oath of Eorl is a mutual defense pact. Cirion gave the land of Rohan to the Rohirrim, and they swore to always come to each other's aid. AFAIK, the gift was free and clear and there's no "rent" or other compensation.

I'm not sure how well it holds for Middle Earth, but I think part of the protocol for RL royalty is that the Head of State for a host country holds temporarily higher rank than visiting royals, and that during big state occasions such as coronations or state funerals or the like, the visiting royals can choose to express that by offering them a bow or curtsy. Given that this scene is, I think, Aragorn's coronation in Minas Tirith, I'd say it's perfectly fine for Eomer to offer a bow as a sign of respect?

(Anonymous) 2015-01-19 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
OP will buy that, although I know in RL people sometimes raise a stink about it (e.g., when the U.S. president is perceived as bowing to any other leader).

(Anonymous) 2015-01-18 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
When I got the "crowning" thing my mouth shriveled up like this: O.O

I was expecting some kind of dodgy sexual slang reference, not a nine-months-after-sex technical term.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-19 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
mahahahahahahah
haha
hee...

(Anonymous) 2015-01-19 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
That looks more like eyeballs than a mouth.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-18 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe he bowed out of respect for Aragorn being the only leader in Middle-Earth who can give a motivational speech that can't be summarized as "Welp, we're gonna die".

(Anonymous) 2015-01-18 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe... and yet I still like Theoden's speech better.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-19 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
Well, at least Theoden's speech don't send the soldiers to sleep...

In LOTR, it does say that Eomer and Aragorn ended up always fighting their fights together after the War of the Ring and being really chummy. But it also makes it seem that Eomer looked to Aragorn as a leader. Eomer is king but he does pledge his loyalty to Aragorn in some way.

So, a little bow to Aragorn makes sense.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-19 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Kings and Queens bow to each other out of respect. It's kinda a historical thing.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-19 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
Do they? I didn't know that. Is it a bow-bow, or just a nodding kind of "heyyyy...." thing?

We just watched the extended version of the first movie tonight, and Elrond says that Aragorn could unite the race of men; he definitely implies that Aragorn is going to be the king of everybody if he accepts his role as Isildur's heir. I realize that may not jive with the original canon, but it seems to be what the movies were going for.

I think Theoden gets away with not being beholden to send help to Gondor because the king has been absent for forever and Denethor has clearly lost his mind; we haven't rewatched the second movie yet, so I don't remember what exactly he says.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-19 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm, it didn't occur to me that that was implied by the movie. As you say, it isn't canon (in which it's definitely stated that Aragorn was king everywhere but Gondor), but that's an interesting idea.

Hope you had fun with your rewatch!

I don't think the bow had anything to do with their respective ranks, or that it indicated subservience on Eomer's part (or that anyone there would think it did.) It was just a gesture of respect that he chose to extend to a fellow warrior, monarch and friend while he was in Aragorn's kingdom, at Aragorn's coronation.

I wouldn't be particularly surprised if Aragorn returned the courtesy when he visited Meduseld, either. They'd each seen what the other was made of, and both knew they were equals; I don't think either one of them would require a strict adherence to protocol to continually remind each other and everyone else of it.
