'try-hard'? for real?

I think there's room for both, but I do wish we saw more well-rounded, independent women, more flawed antiheroic women, more women whose strength isn't necessarily physical, rather than the omnipresent unrealistically skinny warrior woman trope that is ubiquitous in genre fiction.

Eh, there are some awesome female characters floating around though. Mrs. The Monarch, Helga (from Hey Arnold) Lucille (A monster in Paris) Mabel (from Gravity Falls) etc

(Anonymous) 2015-01-21 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Dr Mrs the Monarch.

But yeah. She's one of my favorite characters!

Mabel is my favorite part of that show. Granted, I love all the other characters, but Mabel takes it from "cool show" to "please Disney, keep this one going for a long time."

WOMAN UP

At least that movie had the other type of female character too.

I haven't seen BH6 yet but I hope that's a phrase only said once in the movie because it is by far the most grating and annoying thing Disney has ever written for an "empowered strong female character".

I haven't seen either film but I do know the type of character you're referencing. It's what a poor writer considers a "strong" female character.

The type who verbally slams down other characters
Is physically violent
The smartest/most competent

These characters aren't so much characters as they are tokens. They're very rarely given a backstory or interesting characterization (weakness/flaws that have an impact on the plot, a character arc, etc.).

They're generic as fuck and boring. Yet somehow they garner tons of fans.

Reminds me of that stupid Van Helsing movie where they kept talking up the female lead as this strong, confident warrior who didn't need no man.

She won one fight in the movie. One fight. Against a midget.

"Yet somehow they garner tons of fans."...when they are male.

Corrected for you.

Even beyond the feminist argument, which I agree with, I just hate how it seems like every character needs to be tough in order to be impressive or likeable. There are plenty of other good qualities a person can have. I want to see more men who can't fight but have other skills just as much as I want to see more women like Kiki. But it's true that there's an extra level of bullshit when it comes to female characters because of some people wanting to fight the whole woman=weak mindset and choosing the most simplistic way to do it.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-21 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
Yeeeeah I agree with you OP.
I totally cringed whenever Maria went "lol I also know kung-fu/karate/sword fighting!!!!" in the climax in BOL.
Like I think it's an okay movie and all but maaaan that last third could of really needed a rewrite or two.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-21 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
agree

(Anonymous) 2015-01-21 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you, OP. I wish more people shared your feelings.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-21 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
LOL if "The Rebel" was a real poster label for Maria. The main guy was a lot more rebellious than she was.

Image: screen cap from Kiki’s Delivery Service, and promo art of Maria from Book of Life.

Text: I think it’s disappointing that there are less female characters like Kiki in western animation and more like Maria from “Book of Life.”

“Strong female character” apparently means you need to be some try-hard “badass” who wields a sword and shows up all the males as opposed to simply being a well-rounded character who is able to function on her own.

Haven't seen Big Hero 6 but I definitely agree with you, OP.

I'd also like to see more female characters lacking in empathy/social skills, and it's not portrayed as a character flaw that desperately needs fixing. Like sometimes there will be, say, a highly intellectual woman who's really cold but then you find out what she really wants is babies or something. Whereas anti-social dudes are usually allowed to stay anti-social. :|

Some people see the phrase "strong female character" and think it means "physically/mentally [and almost always masculinely] strong", when it actually is supposed to mean "strongly created character, not just a one-note stereotype.

I'd love to see more characters (male and female) with actual weaknesses and struggles. I have a couple shows on my to-watch list where people really compliment the characters, but I have shit luck trying to find them on my own.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-21 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
The problem with the Strong Female Characters is their role hasn't changed. They're still the sexy lamp everyone wants to have, or the prize the dude wins. It's just that they've gone from bland and sweet to sassy and action-grrrl. Because a strong action dude needs a strong action lamp, no boring Walmart specials for him. He's too good for that.

Until they stop being a lamp, painting flames on the sides doesn't actually change anything.

Don't know the first but I know the new trend of sjws ~feminists~ is to put every female character who has a romantic relationship into their black list.

Yet, fandoms worship plenty of male characters that are like Maria (and more bland and underdeveloped) so yeah..

From all the talk I expected Maria to be an interesting character, turns out she's one of the worst part of the movie for me.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-22 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I agree. As much as I love butt-kicking action women, realistically there are many more great examples of strong women out there that could be represented in media.
