I kind of agree. I love all of Star Wars, even the ridiculous parts of the EU. But I am scared that it is going to be all references and totally ignoring or even mocking anything established in the Prequels. I want a movie that stands on its own while still being a part of the whole Star Wars universe.

That being said, I'm still excited because it is Star Wars and I'll never not be excited by new Star Wars things.

Enh, I think it's okay. General rule of thumb goes, the longer a time period between movies, the worse it'll be. And we've already done that ONCE with Lucas's prequels.

I'm so glad they J.J. Abrams another classic franchise to fuck up beyond all recognition.

Not seeing this movie ever. Not even for free. Not even if they paid me.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-27 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
I could have written this secret so, suffice it to say, I agree with you completely anon.

Given how hard JJ Abrams fucked Trek over, I wish for nothing more than that he keep his paws off Star Wars.

Alas, it is not to be.

I think I have an idea for a secret. Kind of petty though, so maybe I won't make it.

I've gotten to the point that I will wait and see how it holds up. Maybe, since Star Wars was JJ's thing all along, maybe he'll surprise us and it'll be what
Star Trek should have been. But, it may also be a disaster. I dunno. So I'ma wait.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-27 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
I plan to see it in the dollar theater and think of it as an au. A nice bit of fanfiction I can view between rereading the EU novels.

That's interesting, because in discussion I've seen, there's enough vitriol towards Abrams to make it a very acceptable position.

Just personally, it would be hard for me to get excited about it in the first place - the prequels were disappointing enough to teach me that lesson, and I've really cooled off on Star Wars in general.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-27 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
I don't blame you. IMO, it'd take a real optimist to think that this going to turn out well.

My biggest worry is a repeat of what Abrams did with Star Trek - something that isn't bad as an action flick, but fails to capture the spirit and magic of the original.

It's... called The Force Weakens? *Had not heard it even had a title yet*

... Yeah, count me equally unexcited.

You are DEFINITELY not alone, OP!

I'm not excited for this movie at all. I will be shocked if it's any good. I'll probably even wait til it comes out on DVD to see it, tbh.

Honestly, tentatively hyped. (That'll turn into full hype if Tano's in it...)

I haven't even bothered to watch the trailer, but I have been subjected to random stills and a small clip last night.

I'm just going to do my best to ignore it until it goes away. Uncle George might not have been perfect, but I liked his movies and that's enough for me. I don't need the next generation of sequels to make me a happy SW fan.

I guess I'm going to be one of the so far only two voices of dissent and say that I'm mildly intrigued by it and will be giving it a chance. I'm also tremendously good at compartmentalization, so that might have something to do with it (e.g. nothing can ruin or taint the originals for me, so I don't really care whether something fucks the franchise up).

I doubt I'll see it in theaters, though. I usually don't even see movies I'm really excited about in theaters, because I'm a huge cheapskate.

I'm not super-excited for the film but I am interested to see where they go with it, I get not being hyped towards something if everyone you know is gushing about it though, it can be difficult to even express a neutral opinion without getting an earful(I've got someone who does this irl with Dr Who).

(Anonymous) 2015-01-27 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Same here, OP.

I just don't care anymore. Fandom burned me out on it. You can't have an opinion on anything without someone getting defensive, or attacking.

This seems to be a common enough opinion to me. Maybe not with some of the more hardcore Star Wars fans? (But...idk, the hardcore fans are often the hardest to please.)

Not that there's anything wrong with you expressing yourself, mind you. I'm not super excited either, but it IS Star Wars, so I will see it and most likely enjoy it on some level, even if only as a shiny action flick.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-27 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
I guess I'm the opposite. It's the first time I've really been excited to see Star Wars. And I liked JJ's Star Trek and I'm a TOS fan (TOS, NG, and DS9. Voyager is okay and I haven't watched Enterprise.)

I hope you're wrong and hope you thoroughly enjoy being wrong.

I'm still interested in it, but yeah, I have a feeling it's going to be full of knock-offs of the original. Hopefully, if that happens, they'll get it all out of their systems with the first one and the next two (assuming they're made) will stand on their own.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-27 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
Shut yer piehole OP, it has fancy CGI, Benedict Cumbersnatch, it's cool and coolly nerdy, it's non-prequel Star Wars, and you're gonna like it!

You're probably right, OP. It looks like this one, at least, is going for the nostalgia market.

I want to be cautiously optimistic, but I don't want to get too excited about it. The only other film I've seen by Abrams was that Trek movie, and it didn't really grab me. But we'll have to see.

Not a fan of the title, though.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-27 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
The fact that JJ Abrams is involved means I don't care about it. The guy takes a dump on everything he touches. Everything.
