Text: Not even a little bit of a secret: I ship Destiel.

The secret: the only way I can find Dean interesting enough to watch anymore is to maintain my headcanon that he's secretly struggling with life as a closeted bisexual man.

(I'm a bi woman, who isn't out to a lot of people, so this helps offset the eyerolling I'm starting to do over this show in general and his character in particular,)

you just recently started to roll your eyes over supernatural? it's been unwatchable bullshit for years.

Aw, OP. If you want to read about bi men dealing with themselves, either in or out of the closet I can offer you other stories to supplement your headcanon with! (Not fanfic, original stuff.) I have lots of awesome bi stuff!

I'm a little different in that the only reason I'm able to stomach Supernatural anymore is because the Dean character is the only one left on the show who I like and can relate to.

But I'm also a bisexual woman who isn't out to a lot of people (especially not family members) and headcanoning Dean as someone who is struggling with the same issues is oddly comforting and helpful to me so I definitely understand where you're coming from, OP.

I never watched it, but from what I see on m dash this is a pretty popular headcanon.

It's great that your headcanon helps you, but you shouldn't force yourself to watch something you don't like.

I'm pretty sure I'm watching just to have more ideas for fic. I haven't agreed with any character decisions since S4. I think everyone is head-canoning something. I don't even try to make Dean or any other character in-character to how they are now. There's nothing enjoyable about that to me.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-30 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
[DC Comics fan]Oh, yeah, I understand that.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-30 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not seeing the problem? Nothing wrong with at interpreting him that way. At this point, the haters are gonna hate any suggestion that Dean might not be 100% straight no matter what you do, and you're not a fan for the purpose of pleasing them. Have at it!

Dean's straight, get over it.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-30 04:13 pm (UTC)(link)
How is pointing out Dean's 10 years of banging chicks, hitting on chicks, visiting strip clubs to see chicks, dreaming of visiting strip clubs, watching het porn videos, collecting titty magazines, and telling people, "I don't swing that way" and act of hate?

I don't get why it's Supernatural/Jensen's responsibility to provide 'representation' to the LGQT community.

Everybody watch out. It's the headcanon police.

I understand why this is secret. I'm a bi woman and I find the whole bisexual!Dean headcanon silly.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-30 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, I was coming here to say this exact thing. I've not bothered watching this season, but even just 1-9 and people absolutely stuffing this bi!Dean stuff down people's throat-- I just don't see it. I don't! I don't see Dean as having even the most passing of genuine attractions to men. (Please, please don't give me the Dr. Sexy thing again. That was a joke. And a slightly tasteless one at that.)

Plus Jensen and the powers that be have been pretty damn clear that Dean is straight, the end.

And I say this as a bisexual person, yeah.

I think that's an awesome headcanon. Why not a bisexual Dean? that would definitely make the series more interesting. I slogged through season 5 and just couldn't anymore.

I loooove Bi!Dean too, but I had to stop watching the show a long time ago. It got too bad even for me, and I love garbage TV.

[personal profile] anonymous4 2015-01-30 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
I never understand what people are expecting from programmes like Supernatural. It's not Shakespeare, it's a commercial TV series. It basically exists to keep us watching between adverts. There are TV series that break new ground and rank as important drama, but Supernatural was never one of them.

(Personally, I find it fun, but that's neither here nor there).

Yeah, really. I'm emotionally invested in it in a way I rarely am in any kind of show (and I'm usually bored to tears by important TV dramas lol), but it's a pretty basic story that's never going to be a masterpiece. People expect to see their personal headcanons and calcified character interpretations on screen at all times, and like to pretend it has an unlimited budget besides. It's a lot more fun to watch if you just accept it for what it is.

Love yourself and find something else to watch.

If the show is not interesting enough on it's own to you why drag yourself through it. And the great thing about television lately is we've been getting more and more actual queer characters, some happy and out and some struggling.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-30 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
I started watching from season one and gave up somewhere around 4-8. It was always my headcanon from the very beginning that Sam was bi. Pretty, dewey eyed college boy enjoying his freedom for the first time. He only got with Jessica after banging every handsome jock he could find and then some. Dean, bi... pshaw!

(Anonymous) 2015-01-30 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
Why are you still watching the show?
I'm utterly confused with people who use their time to hate-watch a show for not making a fanon couple canon.

One of my best friends still loves it, and I watch it with her. It's a thing we've done for years, get together, have dinner, watch this silly show.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-30 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't see anything wrong with this at all. But SPN fandom is cray so I understand why it's a secret.

Personally, I understand that TPTB think of Dean's character as heterosexual, end of story.

Personally, his character comes across as quite possibly bi for a number of reasons. 1. Sexuality is fluid and lots of people are a little bit bi, even if they generally identify as straight. 2. His OTT heterosexuality actually presents, especially now that he's in his mid to late 30s, a little like he is trying to prove something. 3. He regularly develops serious emotional connections with other men, while seeming to avoid them with women.

I think you could argue it either way. No point saying that your interpretation is 100% right though.

OP, I feel you.

I am ride or die with this dumb show but I know exaaaactly what you mean about how even a tiny offhand comment from Dean that supports this headcanon (which I also share - I'm bi too btw) can get me through the weakest, most pointless episode.

I won't like start a RIOT or bitch forever if/when the show ends without confirming this. I know it was never the writers' plan for him and like, I don't want them to do a hasty shitty story about it just because it's what a lot of us want. .......BUT THAT SAID, I want it so fuckin' bad, man. Repressed bisexual Dean Winchester just speaks to the heart of me, and I know they're very clearly starting to bristle under the spotlight that this part of the fandom is getting, and that's kind of uncool......but then I start thinking...it's 2015, for FUCK'S SAKE, does it have to be SO UNFATHOMABLE to have a male lead character on a little-watched genre show eventually come to the realization that he's in love with another dude? A genre show with a fandom that they KNOW would not only be cool with it, but be wildly into it? Knowing that queer audiences are literally starrrrrving for representation, that the show (in its tenth season, when it started getting stale around 4 seasons ago) would get a whole new fanbase and maybe some GLAAD awards (fucking Glee is still getting noms, y'all) and at the very least widely lauded just for having the balls to do it, is there really a reason it Simply Could Not happen?

Really the only reason is, it's not what the writers want. :(
