I've seen critics and fans alike theorizing parts of "Elementary" were Rob Doherty reacting to "Sherlock" in an "I can cover that topic more tactfully!" sort of way, so you wouldn't be alone in airing your opinion.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-27 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
That's what it feels like to me, too. Every time Sherlock crosses a line, there's a consequence for him. It's not just used like some snappy bit of comedy everyone's supposed to forget about five seconds later because he's so Sherlock Holmes. It feels more realistic, IMO.

One of the best shows ever created out of pure spite. :)

Maybe...but to me he's just the most OOC of them all...(though, tbh, I always though the book one was a bit of an asshole, too, so maybe he's supposed to be).

(Anonymous) 2015-02-27 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
ACD Holmes had his rough edges, but he wasn't an asshole to people the way BBC Sherlock's an asshole to people. ACD Holmes understood that if you treat people like they're worthless idiots, nobody will ask you to help them even if you're brilliant.

I love this secret. And it's probably accurate.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-27 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Well IMO the original Holmes always tried very hard to set people at ease and be polite, despite his eccentricities. :) He was more self-destructive than rude or disruptive.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-27 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
So much agreement for this. I don't understand where asshole-holmes even comes from. I feel like I read totally different books than the people making the TV/Movie versions lately :\

This is one of the most common arguments over the two: Elementary!Sherlock actually has to deal with the consequences of his dickery! But Sherlock Holmes would never be an addict! Elementary!Sherlock is not an asshole for assholishness' sake! But Sherlock Holmes isn't supposed to be relatable, he's supposed to be a heroic myth! And so on.

I def think BBC Sherlock has gotten better at interacting with people to some extent, but he's always going to be an asshole. (And he's always going to be kind of awful to John, but frankly John doesn't seem to care all that much. That's part of what makes their relationship so interesting to me in the first place though, so I won't complain.)

However, I don't find this theory unlikely, and don't see why there's anything wrong with saying so.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-27 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
I actually like both shows, but I prefer Elementary just because the Sherlock in that show is badly socialized and a basket of issues-- but he's *trying.* He knows he has trouble relating to other people but on some level he likes them, and wants to have friends, he just never learned how. And Joan takes none of his BS so he can trust her, but she's also kind so he can trust her, and even when he rejects a rebuke in the first place he usually takes the criticism to heart and later tries to demonstrate he's absorbed the lesson. He's like a stray cat bringing her dead mice or something.

And even at that, when he REALLY fucks up he's held accountable, which is painful but necessary. I'm not super attached to ACD Sherlock so I don't care if he's OOC, I just find him a really interesting take on the troubled man-child, because he's trying very hard to be a man and he's now got the sense to realize he needs help (the whole series is predicated on the idea we sometimes need help) and to accept it or even ask for it.

And to offer it, however he can when he sees someone else needs it. I think overall it's a well-written series and I enjoy it.

I love this.

Agreed 100%. This series has really put a lot of effort into its characterization and why people behave the way they do, and they've done an amazing job on reinterpreting the Holmes/Watson relationship in a contemporary setting.

Text on Elementary!Holmes: My theory about how they came up with his characterization was that they tried to create a Holmes who WASN’T an everyone he meets.

Text on Sherlock!Holmes: (ahem)

I keep this theory to myself for obvious reasons.

I confess after my initial kneejerk "ew american sherlock?!" if I had to pick one to watch I am leaning to Elementary as I just keep hearing okay things about it.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-27 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
I think they came up with it by mashing a bunch of terrible Sherlock AU's together.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-27 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
And it's still better than Sherlock.

But Elementary!Sherlock is an asshole, just to their subjects of the cases, especially when they're prevaricating. He's just not an asshole to his friends (just blunt), and when he is, he thinks about it or is called on it. I actually think Elementary!Sherlock is probably accurate to how ACD!Sherlock would have been if the culture he lived in was modern, but I understand that seems very different from ACD!Sherlock.

(Anonymous) 2015-02-27 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
I think he gets a pass for being an asshole (even to say I say 'eh', he's not super polite but neither is he brutal) to suspects. That's generally how cop shows work. The difference between him and BBC Sherlock is that BBC Sherlock treats everyone rather condescendingly or manipulatively, depending on his mood or what he needs from them at the time and he's rarely called out for it, nor does he learn from past mistakes.

You know what yeah I have this meta fanon too! Ofc, Elementary's Sherlock is still a dick, but hell yeah he does come off as a gentleman by comparison.
