(A norn man and a norn woman from Guild Wars 2 wearing Feathered armor set)

When I play games I try to put the males in outfits that reveal some skin and females in practical armor. This is not a secret.

I seem to have finally figured out why.

I don't hate skimpy outfits off the bat, I hate how much emphasis is almost always on the breasts. Breasts that, again almost always look the same: perfect round watermelon halves sticked to a chest.

I don't need to see cleveage to know I'm playing a woman.

Also why does the same armor sets look completely different when the gender of the avatar is different?

(I'm an asexual dude, if that matters)

I hear you. All I can say is that, at least in some of the MMOs I've played in the past few years, it's a little better than it used to be in terms of certain gear looking the same on male and female characters. Some games even have variation in breast size, so that not all the females are 34D.

i feel like out of all the games that you could've used to prove this point, GW2 probably does a better job of being less about the boobs than a lot of games. i mean it's by no means perfect and they could definitely do a much better job, but i always flashback to some of the other (admittedly shittier) MMOs i played and the selection GW2 offers in terms of armour is so much better.

LOTRO did the best job for armour imo though, shame the game isn't on a prettier engine.

OP

I used GW2 as an example because it's the one I'm playing, and struggling with, at the moment. I'd want to make a female human mesmer, but lot of the light armor is so boob-a-rific that I fear I'll waste all my transmutation chargers on that. I guess I'll make a warrior.

ah, that's fair then.

i just put my necro in the adventurer's scarf, striped scarf, dry bones top, illustrious gloves, exalted pants and aetherblade boots, i look pretty cute and only a bit of midriff and thigh.

*tilts head* There's body-covering light armor in GW2. This link may be of use to you: http://www.gw2armorgallery.com/norn-light.htm - also the wiki: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Norn_female_light_armor

I'm assuming your character's a norn based on the secret, but if not, just click one of the other races. You also may want to consider races, because the armor will look different; for instance, Asura and Charr have MUCH less revealing armor than Norns, Sylvari, or humans.

Medium and heavy armor have a lot of options too. At this point, once you have discovered an armor skin, it's unlocked for your full account, so you can transmute it. I'll note that medium and heavy have both skin-baring and non-skin baring armors, and if you're buying your upgrades off the trading post, there's usually options for both within a few levels of each other, if you don't want to spend transmute charges while you're leveling. My main, who is a Norn, goes back and forth. She was wearing this style for awhile but is wearing this now, which is just about her limit for skin-baring (helms hidden, of course).

You can preview armor/wardrobe items at the bank including things you don't yet own, so you can mix and match until you found the perfect outfit.

also this site is great to quickly view armor:

I typically only play female characters so I'll make tons of practical looking mog sets and then have one or two revealing ones when I feel like dressing my toons like that. I share the gripe with some armour pieces looking way skimpier on female characters than male though, that's annoying, if it shows lots of skin on a lady I want it to show lots of skin on a dude too. It's only fair.

I play SWTOR. All of my toons are female, because, for once, I can play a video game and not control Default Stubbly White Dude.

Most of the armor does a good job of looking similar on male and female characters--there's even a couple of barechested coats that just have a bandeau top on the ladies. And then, naturally, there's the Slave Girl-type stuff that's only equippable on female characters.

Sometimes, though, the difference in armor based on gender is MASSIVE for no reason. I ended up with a chestpiece that was basically a sports bra and detached fabric buttflap. On a male character, it had sleeves, and a midriff, and a collar (and it wasn't, as far as I could tell, MEANT to be "sexy"). The disconnect was baffling. I won a roll on another chestpiece while running with a PUG, and no one else wanted it because it was ugly. I didn't care, the thing had SLEEVES.

But the availability of "sexy" armor for male toons in SWTOR is really, really limited. For various reasons, my husband has named all of his toons but his main after underwear (male and female), and spent AGES trying to find armor for his male toons that was basically underpants. Most of it is invisible armor, but there is exactly ONE pair of pants for male toons that looks skimpy like underwear. When he decked out a female toon similarly, there were multiple options for skimpy bottoms--the trick was finding a top that didn't cover them up!

Oh yeah I've noticed that more recent armour sets in games(even WoW which has always been terrible for it) for ladies haven't been as skimpy, or have been equally as skimpy on a dude, which I like. But sadly there are cases where this still doesn't apply and it's always a bit frustrating.

One of the mog sets I'm after on my warrior is super-skimpy on a lady(like really it is bikini-plate) but on a dude it's a full breastplate and greaves. And that's like, nah man I want full plate stockings on a male toon as well with this you get me? But alas, that is not meant to be.

It's always so much easier to find skimpy-wear for lady toons than male, like you have to hunt to find that shit in WoW half the time. And even in GW2 the discrepancy can be annoying, but I will say that GW2 does do a pretty good job for the most part with it's armour sets(the cloth gear is where is starts to fall apart a bit).

I know this isn't a Blizzard game, but, HI BLIZZARD.

*looks at certain plate and mail armor sets and the black mageweave cloth set in particular*

Granted, I use some of the skimpy mail wear from time to time (i like the silly red/black/gold booty shorts, ok?), but I also really like the full damn armor and would like to see a version for the ladies. B/

I have one skimpy set in purple and one practical set for my hunter. My warlock has a leotard with thigh highs just cause and she's sexy and she knows it~!!

My male norn wears that exact shirt precisely because it's skimpy in a ridiculous way. :D

Saaaame! I dislike the rest of the set, but the shirt is damn awesome.

I've also got him wearing the bottoms but everything else is from a different set. It's pretty funny watching him run around in the snow with his bare pecs poking out.

I know people like to point at WoW for these but in my experience, they've gotten a lot better with that. I play mostly female characters and I've run across very few skimpy sets of armor in the last few expansions.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-13 11:07 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know. I've only started playing WoW recently, and it seems that the skimpy armor still abounds for lower-level characters in particular, but as you level up, the armor gets better. My level 100 character has a full set of armor that covers everything.

The first thing I do with new female characters is to buy a shirt and get a tabbard asap. They both help to cover up better.

someone who thinks the way I do - my female characters always get a shirt to wear under their chest armor.

That's one thing I have to say Bioware has done well in Dragon Age, they make the female models of armour match up almost exactly to the male. The only outfit I know of that shows gratuitous cleavage is the elven mage robes and Morrigan's robes (and that little boob window in Flemeth's outfit in DA2, though the rest is pretty covering).

(Anonymous) 2015-03-13 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
There's little visible skin in Dragon Age, but the female leather/mail armors have ridiculous boob outlines/boob cups, and the female leather armors have that weird bondage collar.

[identity profile] mimi-sardinia.livejournal.com 2015-03-13 07:36 am (UTC)(link)
I once read something somewhere that the collars were a way of hiding the joining line between the head mesh and the body mesh. Even "naked" all the characters (in both genders) wear a collar/choker/necklace. Maybe the male model for the leather armour is just high enough to hit that line.

I kinda to see what you mean about the outlines, it's a bit of a silly thing, and one of the reasons I tend to avoid the Tower-style mage robes, but then I put my Mage Warden in armour very early on, eventually graduating to Massive Plate which, and barring making a bit of adjustment for a female shape, it doesn't make a point of the breasts at all.

But just go poking around a bit on Nexus mods and you will see people have made plenty of skimpy armour mods for anyone who wants to see piles of skin and doesn't care about logic in armour. I personally want to see all skin covered, even if there are boob patches. I even trade Morrigan's robes for something more discrete.
