Reverse of the love song thread

What songs did you enjoy only to realise that the lyrics are horrible and disturbing.

For example: the Beatles song 'Run for your life' is pretty grim.

'I would rather see you dead, little girl, than to be with another man....'

I dunno about horrible and disturbing, but it kind of sucked when I realized that some of the songs I loved from my childhood are textbook Nice Guy whines. Looking at you, "It's Gonna Be Me" and "Everything You Want".

Everything You Want is still going to be one of my favorite songs ever. If you really want to apply the Nice Guy lens to everything, you might as well scratch out the entirety of unrequited love as a theme.

I TOTALLY thought of "It's Gonna Be Me". But I still listen to that song because it's from my childhood and I like it. Oops.

I don't read Everything You Want as a nice guy song at all. I read it as a post-breakup "I thought everything was fine; what the hell happened?" song.

The Ramones, I Don't Wanna Grow Up. I still love the song, but I originally thought it was just a Peter Pan (and isn't that a whole other can of worms) kind of childishness.

I mean, it's not as bad as wishing death on someone, but it just does not give me good vibes anymore. It's a shame, because I mostly like the album other than that.

Maybe not horrible or disturbing but, I get a pretty strong reaction to a lot of after-break-up songs that sound just so petty. Like Dido's Don't think of me, with the chorus going:

"When you see her sweet smile baby, don't think of me
When she lays in your warm arms, don't think of me"

Well, you know what. I won't think of you. I have moved on, and you need to get a grip.

This made me chuckle. Thinking about it 'you need to get a grip' can be applied to like 90% of breakup songs.

I hate the really violent or psycho break up songs. The ones about getting revenge.

Before He Cheats sorta bothers me for that reason. I listen to that song and like "um you need to chill. also that's pretty illegal.". And it still bothers me that the girl is trashing the "other girl" she's made up in her head. I know it's hard but, blame the dude who's cheating, not the person he may very well have lied to to rope in.

I mean do people not think guys (or girls) lie about being single when they cheat?

Relient K's Faking my Own Suicide. I mean... The title should tell you enough. It's such a cheery song, and I was blindsided when it first popped up when I was listening to the CD. It's to this date only song in the middle of an album I've deleted from my library. Just nope.

I have to wonder what this generation would think of "I Knew I Loved You Before I Met You." I think it's fine, but it seems like it would creep some people out.

I really love Prince Heathen (Child Ballad #104, for ya nerds), particularly this version of it. But I really would never ever want that to describe my life. D:

I don't know if it's SUPPOSED to be a love song or just Owl City being weird and non-sensical, but the lyrics to Deer in the Headlights are just so, WTF to me.

Met a girl in the parking lot,
And all I did was say hello.
Her pepper spray made it rather hard
For me to walk her home,
But I guess that's the way it goes.

idk about horrible and disturbing, but there are a few I've had similar experiences with. For the most part lyrics don't bother me but one song I can think of that I really liked the first few times I heard it but just had to stop listening because the lyrics bugged me so much was "I Will Possess Your Heart" by Death Cab for Cutie. It was like the Nice Guy theme song.

I don't know if it was intended to be so, but "Johanna" (Anthony's version) from Sweeney Todd is, for my money, the creepiest love song Sondheim ever wrote. And he did a love duet between Squeaky Fromme and John Hinckley Jr. aimed at Charles Manson and Jodie Foster, respectively. I mean seriously:

Actually, I think "Norwegian Wood" takes it for most disturbing Beatles song, just because of how much more subtle it is. I had a tape of Beatles love songs that I used to listen to all the time when I was a kid, and I think I was in my 20s before I caught on that the guy burned the girl's house down at the end.

Hawksley Workman songs tend to be like that too, come to think of it. "Striptease" is such a fun little song, and then you get lines like "All the ways my mother taught me how/I want you now, I want you now..." and you're like, "Wait, what?"

A not insignificant amount of the music I listen to. I'm a goth. Disturbing comes with the territory. There's one particularly catchy song that I've listened to for years, that the lyrics are about a guy waking up his lover for a collective suicide (Terminal Choice / Collective Suicide - Club version). I always find myself singing along to it in the car, which gets some... o.O reactions.

Then there's the one that is also musically catchy and the lyrics are about a guy begging his lover to rape hi. (London Before Midnight / Kiss). And "Let Me Be Your Armor" by Assemblage 23, which starts out about someone who wants to protect their lover, but segues into how they end up stifling and controlling them to a point of abuse. And... I'll stop here or I'll be listing song for awhile.

Not exactly horrible and disturbing, but I love Aleander Rybak and when I pay more attention to the lyrics for Oah I realize how much it sounds like sexual harassment, what whith him keeps on telling her he's the one for her, despite her being "too young for him" and has a boyfriend.
