*cough* Not quite 'never' -- there is Tony on Orphan Black, who so far seems to be doing okay.

(Unlike Brandon Teena.)

The Tony plot was so embarrassing though. I kind of hope they don't bring him back.

Was just coming here to mention Tony.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-28 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh CRAP. I knew I should have kept up on that show. I'm working on a pilot right now featuring a trans guy named Tony, after a nice fella who was at the same name-change court session as me. But if there's just been a trans guy named Tony on TV, I'll have to change the name.

Any suggestions? He's a neurotic overthinker who plays amateur baseball; kinda like Charlie Brown in some ways.

Degrassi: The Next Generation had a trans dude! Also, the manga Yuureitou, if you're into manga. Those are the only examples I can think of though, and yeah, it does suck. :(

Yeah, I was thinking of Adam as well, though I can't recall if he had a happy ending on the show or not.

Invisibility is a double-edged sword for a lot of minority groups, yeah. While they don't get the awful portrayals and outright antagonism, they get forgotten a lot, too. Then if you talk about it, everyone says "at least you don't get bashed on, check your privilege" lol. It sucks.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-28 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I think a lot of mainstream society finds trans-women more shocking than trans-men and as a result, trans-men are not seen as good candidates for shocking television or Very Special Episodes or look-at-how-progressive-and-inclusive-we-are! characters. Why they can't just be random characters who aren't portrayed as shocking, I dunno.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-28 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah I feel like this is the cause

(Anonymous) 2015-03-28 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I've actually found that as far as quality (read: thoughtful, not transphobic, not overly clueless) portrayals go, they're about equal.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-28 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
It's because patriarchy. Trans-"women" simply get more attention because of their gender, same as any other man. Because patriarchy.

Next stupid question?

(Anonymous) 2015-03-28 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Go home radfem anon, you're drunk.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-28 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Right, because society, and men in particular, love transwomen sooo much.

Here's you see a common reaction of cis men towards transwomen.

Right conclusion, wrong data.

It's because patriarchy. Trans women get more attention because the idea of "a man wanting to be a woman" is deeply threatening to the whole idea that men are inherently superior. Trans men get shrugged off because the idea of "a woman wanting to be a man" is seen as more natural, because of course, why wouldn't they? Men are inherently superior, don't you know.

It's the same reason tomboys are acceptable, but girly boys aren't (and there isn't even a neutral term that's the equivalent of "tomboy", just insults like "sissy").

The only trans person I know is a guy from work. I guess I never paid attention to it in the media. There aren't any trans people in the shows I watch, I guess.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-28 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
They had one on Glee.

glee is not the place to look toward for any positive representation

Text: I’m so fucking tired of television and other media only focusing on trans-women. Trans-men exist too!

It’s bullshit that the only “current” thing I can find with a trans-male character is Dragon Age. Not even the news ever talks about trans-men.

I should just be glad trans people are getting any attention at all though, right?! That’s what it sure seems like.

There was a trans dude on Strange Empire! They never used that term on the show (because it was set in 1869), but he consistently identified and presented as male.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-29 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Huh, who's the trans character in Dragon Age? I hadn't heard that there was one.

(Anonymous) 2015-03-29 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Not a playable character, but one of Iron Bull's men. Krem, I think his name was? He hangs out at the bar and you can talk to him about stuff and he gives you missions for the war table.

To be fair, most portrayals of trans women are really transphobic and they're mostly the butt of jokes so it's not like they have more representation, more like people are more aware of them and like to mock them more.

The Fosters had a transman named Tom Phelan playing a trans teen character -- it wasn't a major storyline but I thought it was pretty well handled.
