I knew we had differences and your police have to deal in many areas with a high proliferation of firearms but that's crazy.

We also have a drug war on our border that, at least where I live, occasionally spills over with the police being specifically targeted - and I suspect that's something you don't have to deal with. : /

Sometimes it's hard not to, though. The outrage happening in Boston over a career criminal who shot a police officer in the face and was then killed while he ran/shot at the other officers. There are times you have to use force, because a baton isn't going to stop someone with a gun who has no qualms with killing you to get away.

The problem here is a lot of the time american police don't need to use force like a gun and yet they do, several times into the person.

Well in 2008 there were 1.1 million persons on a full-time basis, including about 765,000 sworn personnel (defined as those with general arrest powers).

So not sure if the 765,000 is the ones you count. Because I expect many of the 1.1 million were dispatchers, detectives, and such.

In 2008, 147 officers were killed on duty. I am terrible at math, so someone else will have to figure out the percentages/ratios.

It creeps me out too.

I wouldn't be as creeped out if it wasn't for the lack of evidence that they're trying to reduce shootings?

We had 4 people shot dead (separate) in a fortnight last year and the government initiated an inquiry into training and new training measures.

Normally our police fatalities are from one shot to the torso - american police go all out with several shots even when the person is down or restrained or giving up.

American police are crazy and creepy. they come from the local populations so i dont even want to think about their families and friends. Creepy.

Those 'differences' are pretty fucking profound when it comes to gun crime though.

Not least that the UK Police service only has about 6000 AFOs who are legally allowed to carry guns. That's about 4% of our entire police service.

OF COURSE our police are more trigger happy.

Our citizens are FAR more likely to be armed. Thus they're more likely to use deadly force because they could much more easily be killed by a citizen than in the UK.

Except no, because a lot of the people who they've killed lately have included little kids, and women, and mentally ill people and senior citizens *all* of whom were unarmed and shown to be unarmed.

Nobody but troll anons is vehemently anti police here. We are very anti bad police. We are all rational enough to realize that not every one of those 111 deaths is of an innocent helpless victim.

That does not mean there aren't too many of those.

America also has more school shootings

If it bothers you so much, don't come to the U.S. Most of us are used to it by this point.

Also, I vastly prefer "possibly getting shot" to "possibly getting stabbed," since knives seems to be the weapon of choice in the UK. That shit is way more terrifying.
