Could Captain America take Iron Man in a fight? I mean, I know the shield can at least reflect small lasers and Steve is really fast. But couldn't Tony just pick him up, fly up really high, and drop him? Or fly him into space?

Cap has a long history of taking down superpowered opponents. In the 60s and 70s it got so if you even said "He's just an ordinary man!" or called him a "glorified acrobat" they'd cancel your supervillain insurance immediately.

Cap doesn't lose fights. As Kurt Busiek put it, "Superheroes are gods on some level, and Captain America is the god of winning."

So yeah, I'm with OP on this one. Cap would have taken Iron Dick apart piece by piece.

There's an animated movie put out by Marvel which pits them against each other, and they fight to a draw, iirc. I think it's mostly because they didn't want to tip the scales one way or another for various reasons, but if you accept that as some sort of canon, it's canonical that Cap can at least hold his own.

There are three whole movies that could basically be subtitled "In which Tony Stark receives consequences for being an asshole" already.

Escalating a verbal argument into an actual fistfight that would make both participants look like idiot fratboys isn't really necessary.

In the end, what does he lose?

He doesn't lose his fortune. He doesn't lose anyone he loves. He and Pepper are actually CLOSER now. He and Rhodey are still best buds. Not to mention that now he's in contact with the rest of the Avengers.

He's beloved by the public for being Iron Man and gets to tell Congress to stuff it.

Even the physical effects -- the shrapnel in his heart -- are gone.

Tony has suffered no loses. His life has only gotten better.

He MIGHT start to lose things in the next Avengers film, but that's because HE can't leave well enough alone.

Fair fight?

Cap would absolutely beat Tony in a fist fight. But with suits on, no way would Steve come out on top. It'd be a stalemate at best, but muscle alone can't beat reinforced metal armor and various kinds of lasers/firearms/rockets.
