I thought you were talking about the comedic actor until I googled it. I was very worried that John C. Reilly had had a stroke. D:

Same here.

Yep, although halfway through I was like "nah... this has gotta be talking about someone else."

(Anonymous) 2015-04-21 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
first time hearing about this guy

is he salty about the Korrasami ending or something?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-21 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
he's salty about EVERYTHING

he's saltier than the salt monster from that one Trek episode, except that was a monster that needed salt, wasn't it? so never mind, the analogy doesn't really work, but he's salty as hell

(Anonymous) 2015-04-21 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Salt vampire. /anon is old

(Anonymous) 2015-04-21 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Got a link to the original secret, by any chance? Yeah, Wright sounds like a major asshole with a superiority complex. Only someone with no shame whatsoever would engineer AND accept all those Hugo nominations and then pretend they're legitimate nominations earned through his work.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-21 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Whoa whoa whoa whoa, hold up, I thought the Hugos/SFWA were hella strict on logrolling...you mean this dude actually got away with it????

(Anonymous) 2015-04-21 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
oohhhhhhh boy

so I take it you haven't paid attention whatsoever to the Hugos or SFWA or science fiction fandom in genreal in the last... month or so, then

Six nominations in one year, a new record. He didn't "engineer it," strictly speaking--the campaign was organized by Vox Day, that guy who got kicked out of the SFWA after using the official Twitter to spew racist insults at a black writer. There was also a campaign by Brad Torgersen and Larry Correia, which competed with them/inspired them/invited them to help game the system, depending on who you believe. George R.R. Martin has been writing a lot about it on his blog.

Oh man, you have to google the whole Sad Puppies/Rabid Puppies wank, it's glorious. Basically, each group came up with their own slate of writers they felt were deserving of a Hugo nomination but had somehow been ignored even though the Hugos are done by popular vote. There was/is a strong agenda of "let's get back at the SJWs!" and "let's nominate 'real' sci-fi like in the good old days!" with Larry Correia convinced that the only reason he lost a Hugo was because he was a religious conservative and not because people voted for a book they liked better than his.

The Sad Puppies claim to be reasonable and not crazy bigots, but they pretty much owe their momentum to the Rabid Puppies, helmed by Theodore Beale aka Vox Day, a crazy racist bigot who thinks women shouldn't have the vote. Beale actually invited GamerGate types to buy WorldCon memberships and vote in his slate picks, and apparently enough of them did. John C. Wright in particular made out like a bandit.

It's not settled yet, it just got them on the ballot. The vote has yet to go down and lots of fans are very angry they've gamed the system this way.

To be fair, Wright didn't organize the Sad or Rabid Puppies, that was Torgersen and Vox Day.

This is what I get for being busy - miss out the drama surrounding that background and who this dude is :s

(Anonymous) 2015-04-22 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
This all makes me sad. I'm not that into science fiction, but I'm a lit geek so I've sort of followed it after I saw GRRM posting about it on LJ. I'm not sure how it should all play out, but I feel bad about letting the sad puppies win this one. I'm pro having no winners this year and a tightening of rules, because I have no doubt if they win they'll pull the same shit next year. I know GRRM makes a point when he says if there's no winners the sad puppies will feel like they've made a point. But on the other hand why let a bunch of homophobic MRA's types get all these awards and false praise? This is the most damned if you do damned if you don't situation.

John Scalzi is relevant here:

"[H]e’s the sort of person for whom any scenario will be seen as a victory condition; if he were to be set on fire and pushed in front of a speeding train, he would cackle about how this was exactly what he had planned right up until the moment of impact turned him into flaming bits of kibble . . . Fuck that dude. If everything is a victory condition for him — and it is — then worrying about what he’s going to do is sort of pointless. What is he going to do? Why, declare victory! Regardless! So you might as well do what you want. And if that means voting “No Award” in the categories where there are only Puppy nominees, then by all means follow your joy. Yes, he’ll say that’s what he planned all along. You could open a can of peas and he would maintain that you’re doing exactly what he wanted. He wants you to see him as a mastermind, rather than as a general failure whose only successes lie in being terrible to other people, and encouraging others to be the same."

I've been following this and yeah, I agree. I'm going to vote NO AWARD for the cats that have been twisted by the slates.

And hopefully by next year they will have fixed the slate problem by using reweighted approval voting (RAV) to determine nominations (like they're talking about).

Image: John C. Wright’s thoughts on yaoi yuri (spoiler alert, he’s against it)

Text: A while ago, I posted a secret despairing over John C. Wright having a stroke, hearing the “voice of Jesus” in his head, and taking the express train to Crazytown. At the time, most commenters had no idea who he was.

Yeah, I imagine we all know who he is now.

This all feels like a bad dream. He was always the type who thought the only reason you could possibly disagree with him was because you weren’t as smart as him and didn’t read as many philosophy books, but he used to have the insight and creativity to back it up. I still can’t believe this is how his career turned out.

Oh I remember that rant. Yep that was a whole load of crazy right there.

Also maybe I'm being very technical here but...the constant references to sodomy confuse me. Weren't they two GIRLS? Like, no penises involved?

Or is sodomy just a catch all term for "teh gay" now?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-22 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty sure neither Korra nor Asami has a "phallic idol" either.

With this sort of... opinion... everything gay comes back to gay dudes. I assume because if we let lesbians go on vacation on TV, then we've given tacit approval for *shiver* gay men to do the same.

He claimed it was a figure of speech. It was incredibly badly chosen. 'Sodomy' I think he basically intended as 'sexual acts I disapprove of!'

(I do not feel bad about giving up on our dream of joining the SFWA as tinies.)

I was the one who posted the crackpot secret about Holly Lisle a few weeks ago. So I know how you feel. You have my sympathies, anon. :(
