OP here, and not really? The phrase "I am trash" and "this is trash" carries so much negative connotations when used in fandom. I've seen it used to describe gay ships so much. I've seen artist use to demean their fanart, because it's not legit enough for them. The self-depreciating "ironic" kind of shipping just brings so much negativity, always reminding that oh ship it, I ship it too, but don't forget to admit that it's not quality and you should feel bad about it.

I'm not sure why you feel that way, because I have never read such connotations into those claims. Certain creative types have been false-humble about their works since possible forever.

I guess I can't speak for your experience but I've literally never seen any use of it that I'd read that way

well if you want examples the LOK fandom and Mako/Wu ship got called trash all the time. In SU fandom Jasper/Lapis is being called trash at this very moment. I'm not making shit up

Welcome to the concept of reclamation.

Know who's mostly considered trash for shipping things? Girls. It's a way to fight back against sexism and other things and make the word harmless. It's not actually self-depreciating, in my experiences, but ways of going, "Yeah, I know you judge me, so fucking what? I don't give a fuck."

That's taking it too far in the other direction.

How is it reclamation when it's still being used to self-deprecate? That's not how it works (especially if you use it as an insult in the next breath).

Why do you assume it's self-deprecating in a negative sense?

I have legit never heard anyone use "I am [ship] trash" to mean they genuinenly hate themselves.

And yet OP is not the first person I've heard complain about it. What is wrong with people that they must take SOMEONE ELSE'S self-oriented humor seriously??

It's not theirs to reclaim. "Trash" has been used historically in a classist sense, primarily against poor people. Sometimes specifically racialized "white trash, black trash, trashy Mexicans".

Most of the people using it now to ironically call themselves trash come from a middle-class or upper socioeconomic background. To them, it's nothing but a cutesy little ironic saying. To those of us who have been called trash, been put down over our class, been shamed for our families, directly (through insults and mocking) and indirectly (by value shaming, by lack of positive representation) it serves as a hostile microaggression to let us know that we don't belong in fandom, that people like us are not welcome.

Yeah, I think it's really negative. Maybe one of the reasons it doesn't just bug me but, like, super pisses me off is because the first time I encountered it was when Bucky fans started calling Sebastian Stan a trash hobo. It was meant endearingly, and like, what? How does your brain go from "wow I love this person!" to "and therefore their nickname is trash hobo"? I just cringe to think of him hearing about it somehow and thinking his fans hate him.

It *is* self-deprecating irony.

It's also asininely stupid self-deprecating irony.

But I don't think the trash thing has anything to do with quality the way you're thinking of it.

I just think it's an absurdly stupid term to use.
