Heh, this and the later comment on roleplaying remind me of a writeup I found on BRPS once. Community with no hard content rules, but generally pretty soft. New poster comes in and immediately posts a horrific prompt in the general forum without any warnings whatsoever. (Seriously, it was pretty messed-up even by BRPS standards.) First respondent posts that he smothers her character with a pillow to make the noises stop, and she calls him a meanie and leaves the forum forever.

Yeah. It's fiction for a reason - it's where people are supposed to go to indulge their fucked up things, imo. If it spills over into real life that's a problem, but there's no harm in fantasy.

I feel ya, OP. Like sure, there are idiots who take their personal fantasy as How Reality Should Be, but they exist with EVERYTHING. (See: g0ys.) Having the fantasy is not the same as arbiting reality, and long as you aren't being a douche about it, go for it!

If they're your own: my sympathies. Some cognitive dissonance is natural -- you know the thing is bad IRL, so your brain is careful and hesitant around it in fiction. (And that's good! Especially for kinky people who are going to get anywhere near roleplaying this stuff with another human being, because you need lots of thought and care and consideration to make that work.) Don't try to kick the discomfort away by force, but don't beat yourself up for your tastes, either. Just sit with them, give your brain time to sift through them.

If they're other people's: eh, as long as you don't go around harassing anyone, feeling privately uncomfortable is fine. Your Squick Is Not My Squick, and That's Okay.

What cognitive dissonance?

I have rape fantasies. Not because I want to literally be raped in real life but because it's a fantasy that expresses the opposite of reality.

I'm completely ignored in real life. No one pays me compliments. No one finds me attractive. No one looks twice at me. No one wants me.

So is it really that surprising that, in my fantasies, I like to imagine that a guy wants me so badly that he literally can't control himself? That I'm so desirable to him that it overwhelms his self-control?

Seconding this! SPN fandom in my experience has been particularly good about embracing ykinmk and that's ok. In my previous anime fandoms I felt like a scolding mother sometimes, having to remind people of that.
