The difference is that they're not artifically whitened, and covered with veeners etc like american teeth are.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 01:27 am (UTC)(link)People are getting all if their information on American teeth from TV (where obviously there will be a greater amount of cosmetic dental work on display) and applying it to the entire US population while simultaneously decrying steretypes about Britsh teeth.
I don't know anyone with veneers. I didn't even know that many kids with braces back when I was a teen, and I knew penty of people whose parents could have afforded them/had insursnce to cover them. I rarely meet people with blindingly white teeth. Only one in recent memory was a woman who had just gotten married a month before and had gone to get her teeth bleached. Most people just use whitening toothpaste or home whitening kits, if anything.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 02:55 pm (UTC)(link)People who care about their appearances will often whiten teeth or straighten them, though. But they will also probably go to the dentist regularly and have healthy teeth, too.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 01:20 am (UTC)(link)If you don't want to kiss people with "gross teeth", i.e. teeth that haven't seen cosmetic treatment, then it does indeed say a lot about you and it's not very flattering.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 02:53 pm (UTC)(link)Uh, someone who spends money on having their teeth whitened and straightened probably DOES have healthier teeth, sorry. Because they are also likely to go to the dentist regularly, brush regularly, and have cavities filled, etc. I seriously doubt there are many people who take the effort to care for their teeth colour but not their health.

*When you're speaking solely about the number of fillings required for children, which tracks pretty closely to overall health of teeth in adult populations but obviously isn't a direct one to one. I know there are other sources for a more general argument out there but I'm not exactly going to go digging for them.
Though I don't think we are especially a nation of smokers? Would have to dig up the stats on that but certainly for europe and asia I've always been of the impression we spoke less then average.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 12:54 am (UTC)(link)European countries have much higher rates. Greece, Poland, Spain, Germany and France all have higher rates than the UK.
And then you have countries like Russia and Japan where smoking is even more prevalent.
