It's that famous British smile! Most British people have poorer teeth and it effects their overall appearance.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-22 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, they probably stronger teeth, just not artificially straightened or covered with veneers.

In real life Yanks are more prone to terrible teeth. (No socialized dentistry in the USA.) It's just that L.A. actors have partially false teeth a lot.

wait... what.

"In real life Yanks are more prone to terrible teeth."

Uh, got some sources for that?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-22 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

Cracked did a great bit on this a while back:

"A study performed by OECD, an international economic organization, on the state of dental hygiene in developed countries has concluded that the British have the very best teeth in the entire world, with an average of just 0.6 of a tooth decaying per citizen. Not just "not the worst"--the absolute fucking best! That's like routinely mocking the feminine lisp of a guy-pal and finding out he's boned every single girl you know, including your mother (especially your mother)."

Their source is here: http://www.economist.com/node/15060097, featuring British kids having far fewer decayed, filled or missing teeth than American ones (although it acknowledges that British people's teeth might not *look* the best).

I find the "perfect" US teeth terrifyingly fake. It makes them look like clones from some horror factory.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-22 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh, I agree. Some of them look just as natural as my granddad's dentures.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-22 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol different strokes. Crooked yellow teeth definitely put me off. I'll take unnaturally white teeth over that any day.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-22 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
agreed.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-22 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a myth, though. The British have fairly healthy teeth, it's just that healthy teeth aren't the same as cosmetically perfect teeth. They don't spend as much time on straightening and whitening as Americans do, that's all.

Side note but I had a dentist telling me I should get my teeth whitened because it might turn off potential boyfriends? It's a completely cosmetic stain I've had since I was young. He also suggested braces also for cosmetic. My teeth are completely fine and healthy otherwise. Sigh.

It hurt my feelings a bit but if someone is tithed off by a stain you have to be in my face to see - I think I'll be right thanks.

Didn't go back to that dentist

(Anonymous) 2015-04-22 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't blame you, I wouldn't want to go to that dentist, either. I think it's unprofessional to make an unsolicited recommendation for teeth whitening and it feels like he's trying to upsell you.
cloud_riven: Close-up of an open-mouthed piglet! Is it recoiling? Or side-eyeing? Maybe saying, "HEY YOU TWO SHOULD KISS"? Mystery! (eeeeeeehhhhhh)

"I had a dentist telling me I should get my teeth whitened because it might turn off potential boyfriends?"

Eurgh. Is that dentist by chance actually the matchmaker from Mulan? Because eurgh.

aren't most braces for cosmetic purposes? I had one that corrected my overbite at the same time but that's fairly rare.

Yeah pretty sure it's mostly a matter of Americans having more awareness toward the appearance of teeth than the British. Whitening and such is mostly cosmetic, not necessarily healthier. Though I wouldn't claim either actually do have healthier teeth, Americans just tend to whiten and straighten, whereas British people don't.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 05:44 am (UTC)(link)
Unsure if straightening and whitening teeth are covered by the NHS.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Braces in children are definitely covered, but not cosmetic stuff for adults. You'd need to pay privately for that.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-22 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I understand that this is a generalisation and based on perception, not reality, but I wince whenever I see it. Yes, some British people have bad teeth. However, with free NHS dental care for those in education, pregnant women, the unemployed/on benefits and the elderly I would say that there are a lot more people with access to dentists and orthodontists than there are in other countries without systems like the NHS. Even though employed people like me have to pay for our treatment, it is still possible to pay in installments (hello root canal and tooth capping, ugh) making it affordable.

So I guess my point is, please don't generalise about the state of British dentistry from a few poor examples? It's another stupid stereotype that doesn't need enforcement.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-22 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
People might qualify for free NHS dental treatment, but finding a dental practice that isn't exclusively private and is willing to take on new patients is a whole different thing. That's why there are people queueing for hours, sometimes days when a new NHS dentist opens in some areas, just for the chance to get on their books.

Pregnant women, the unemployed/on benefits, children and the elderly all get free or greatly reduced dental and medical care here in the US. They have for years. The problem is our lower middle class/working poor. They don't get squat.

Literally some of the best teeth in the world from a health perspective, which is on top of the hilarious amount of shit we eat in comparison to other countries.

The difference is that they're not artifically whitened, and covered with veeners etc like american teeth are.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-22 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Veeners are so not the thing here in the US that other countries make them out to be. The only people who get them are people where their appearance is part of their job. It's extremely rare for the average person to have them. But we do whiten our teeth so they aren't the same color as corn.
